    Going to Dodger stadium on Jackie Robinson Day is quite the sight seeing all the players wearing 42. The loyalty and pride all Dodgers fans have for Jackie is such an amazing thing. There’s also a giant beautiful bronze statue of Jackie stealing home right when entering Dodger stadium.
    Great reaction.

    • @jamesdakrn
      @jamesdakrn ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And as an Asian Dodger fan, I also love that our team is the first with lots of things too. Fernandomania. Nomo. Chan Ho Park. First to integrate, first Mexican-American star (although again, there will always be the stain of taking away lots of homes from Mexican Americans while building the stadium), first Japanese star in the US, first Korean player in the MLB.
      I remember when I was still in Korea we'd stop class to watch Chan Ho's starts when our country was going through an economic crisis

    • @TamaleRingwald
      @TamaleRingwald ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jamesdakrn I agree. The pitching from Asia, Sandy Koufax, so many great things for baseball all wearing that uniform. Very proud of the Dodgers. Although the displacement of Mexican people in Chavez Ravine really has nothing to do with the Dodgers other than that is where the stadium is built. It was the city’s decision to sell that land years before the Dodgers even considered moving to LA. Corrupt city officials as well as squatters all based on the Red Scare. It really was a storm of issues. I do think the Dodgers have done an amazing job singing the Hispanic community’s praises over the years.

    The movie is a great one and does many things well, but if there is one thing I think it missed is how it virtually skipped over how immensely popular Jackie was in Montreal, because it did not fit with the general theme of the movie. Understandable (From a storytelling point of view), but sad as Jackie almost instantly became a superstar with the Montreal Royals in 1946, where the color of his skin was almost a non-issue; Robinson's wife, Rachel, later described her impression of moving from the states to Montreal as "... like coming out of a nightmare". To this day, Jackie Robinson is remembered as a sports-god in Montreal after he helped the club win its first ever championship.
    The story about the Mississippi born Manager of the team is 100% true though: He did indeed voiced opposition to Jackie joining the team before being put in his place by Branch Rickey and had to change his views on the matter.
    But despite that, Ford and Boseman just nailed their roles and it is a great movie. RIP Black Panther!

    • @DiscoverMontréal
      @DiscoverMontréal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well said! It's a fine film, but it would have been nice to see more of Montreal just because that 1946 season was the stuff of legends.

    My daughter wrote a paper on Jackie Robinson for school. A local fellow here (Grinnell, IA) played with Jackie for a season. His name was Jack Collum. His three sons are friends of mine. Jack is gone now, but he would often regale us with tales of his time in the majors.

    I remember watching this in my Senior history class. Before starting the movie my teacher told us about the language in the film & that it would make us angry or uncomfortable. The scene with Ben Chapman made my teacher so mad that he walked outside the room for air. After class, I asked him if he was ok & he told me that he and his wife adopted a black daughter when she was really young and he couldn't stand the thought of her having to go through something like that.

    Had to come back to this reaction after watching last week's Mets game, played on Jackie Robinson Day, and spotting Rachel Robinson in the crowd. Still full of life at 101 years old, and still repping her husband's incredible achievement! Was also great to see their grandson Busro throw out the first pitch of the game, I believe my Mariners also had members of Jackie's family in attendance and throwing out the first pitch at their game too. Truly remarkable!

    I’m from Philly and I’m a lifelong Phillies fan, but my dad absolutely HATED the Phillies. He often told me how badly the team and the owner at the time, Connie Mack, treated Jackie Robinson when he was a kid in the late 40’s and 50’s.. I was on top of the world when the Phillies finally won the World Series when I was a teenager in 1980, but my dad, not so much.. He tried, but never warmed to them a whole lot…Even though I knew what happened, the impact of how truly bad the Phillies acted didn’t fully register with me until I saw this movie..

    Not a big baseball fan personally but I'm a black dude with a White Mother who played on a Baseball team in her teenage years and ill always treasure watching this film with her,next to watching the Cubs 3-1 series comeback win in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series.
    Alot of really touching moments I appreciated like Leo Durocher warning the Petition signers that Jackie was only the first black man in a long line due to change the very reality of baseball,
    to the neighbor warning Jackie to leave the mob coming for him in the middle of the night,to just the light pole worker telling Jackie and his wife that he and alot other people just want to see Jackie get a fair shot and see if he's got the potential.

    In case anyone cares, I just looked it up. The Dodgers only clinched a tie for first place (with the St Louis Cardinals) the day they beat Ostenmueller and the Pirates. (St Louis would have had to win all their remaining games and the Dodgers lose all theirs.) And in those days, a tie for first at the end of the National League season would have forced a 3-game playoff for the pennant. (The Dodgers would experience that exact thing at the end of the 1951 season, losing 2 out of 3 games to the New York Giants. Poor Ralph Branca gave up the game-losing home run in the bottom of the 9th of game 3.) The Dodgers didn't actually clinch the pennant until the next day. Interestingly, the Dodgers actually lost that day - to the Pirates and Kirby Higby. (Yes, the Kirby Higby who was traded to the Pirates earlier that season.) But the Cardinals also lost that day (to the Boston Braves) officially eliminating them from winning the pennant. I guess, dramatically, that would have been a lousy way to end the movie.

    Holy crap, until you said that was Harrison Ford, I had no idea! By the voice, before the camera revealed his face, I thought it was Bryan Cranston.
    Very much agree with you about Ford as well, normally it just feels like him being him in a movie, but he really became his character!
    Seeing Alan Tudyk as a bad, racist guy is ...weird and hard. He's such a lovable actor and normally plays such lovable and iconic characters - even when he's the "bad guy" in other movies, having him play an actual hateful person is a number on me. I instinctively want to like the character...it's Alan...but...he's racist horrible person so I can't

    • @blueroninstudios

      This film introduced many to Chadwick Boseman, and it was this and other biopic parts that got him the recognition needed to get him on Disney's radar when it came time for Black Panther, so when I heard he was cast as T'Challa, I went back over his filmography. He carried himself with a metric TON of dignity playing Jackie Robinson, so I had no doubt he would be a phemoneal Black Panther. Also.......come ON! Your sharing scenes with Harrison Ford who is a powerhouse of dramatic acting, and you're still able to give just as memorable a performance? Chadwick deserved every role he auditioned for and got, and we will all miss him terribly. Far as IM concerned Harrison and Chadwick are both two of the greatest of all time.

    Instead of watching this one again you can watch one of the other 41 version of this overly remade story. Jackie will always be a national hero and icon but we don't need a new movie about him every 5 years or less. They're almost as many people who have played Jackie Robinson as there are that play baseball every year.

    This movie has a strong 1st and 2nd act but 3rd act was a bit weak......the part when the other manager was pouring in the N-word was massively uncomfortable....and I've seen precious 😬
