I bought an "untested" N64 console from eBay. Seller said it had a rattle. I figured a screw or potentially the heatsink. Took a chance. Turns out it had a AAA battery in it, somehow. I cleaned the internals, hooked it up, and it worked.
Haha, wow I wonder how that ended up in there? Awesome find btw!
You can check for cold solder joints using the multimeter instead of reflowing it.
Great video, I thought maybe it was the capacitors but it was the chip
Thanks for watching!
Good video
Hey, love the video! My N64 is also having the same issue. I'm hoping a clean will solve the no audio problem. If not, do you fix N64s?
Most of the time a clean or cold solder joins being reflowed fix the problem. Unfortunately I dont have any front door or online services for repairing N64's. I simply do this as a hobby, however, sometime in the future that may change! Thanks for watching and I hope you can get your 64 back to working condition 😀
The chip is responsible for video and audio digital to analogue conversion hence no sound, why there was video is beyond me but I suspect that chips can partially fail which is what happened here. Honestly it's good that it only partially failed because that chip not working entirely could look like a bunch of other things and it might not have been identified without an oscilloscope much later than you did.
Yeah, I definitely have not come across this issue before, but glad I was able to get it back to a working state. Thanks for watching!
Im getting like 4.4 k ohms across C140. Nothing else seems to be an issue. I get video but no audio what so ever.
I have the same issue
I just bought a N64 and the video works fine, but no sound, just like in your video. Do you have any recommendations on where I could send my unit to get it fixed? At first I thought it was the cord and did purchase a new one and still have the issue.
I’m not sure if there is any local shop nearby that works on consoles. I would take a look at it for free, but not sure where you’re located. Most of the time it’s just a bad contact, but it’s hard to tell without looking at the system.
Not sure if you still have this problem but Check caps C28 , C24, and and C33 for proper voltage, C28 should read 9v, C24 should read 4.5v and C33 should read 1.7v i often find C24 to goes bad on n64s and simply replacing that one fixes the majority no sound problems
What are you using at 7:40? What product
I am using Quickchip Flux. My honest opinion is that it stays on too sticky on the board for a no-clean flux product.
Good video, wish you had a camera that could zoom more on the actual work
Yeah I wish I did too, I’m actually working on saving up for a setup but they’re really expensive. Hopefully over time I may purchase them to bring higher quality content.
@@totalfix877I get you man those things are expensive. I was on the same boat what I did is I used a Old pixel phone hoked it up to a magic arm and I used it as a cheap Scope. In your case you can use it to record too.
Hope that gives you a idea until you can get your system up.
Keep up the good work.
Ps. can you do a Sega game gear no power up video
Thanks
Yes of course, I will switch it out and try to work on that soon! I apologize for the late reply.
I could see everything just fine
My N64 of 25 years has this issue. I’m pretty tech savvy so I thought I could fix it, but the. i see you have to solder chips and stuff and I have no idea how to do that. I’ll have to see if someone in my area could fix mine without charging me a ridiculous amount
whereabouts you located? :)
Still doing things the hard way, eh?
If there's an easier way I'm always all ears! 👀
I have the same issue
There may be times that certain capacitors no longer work, this seems to be more common on boards that I've worked on.
I have the same issue
Were you able to get it fixed?
