Used to Buying Premium Cars? Adjust Your Expectations When Collecting a Tesla!

  • Tesla is known to approach most things differently, and that includes the delivery and customer handover experience.
How does it compare to a traditional premium manufacturer like Porsche, where you are offered refreshments, opportunity to inspect the car in a spacious well-lit showroom, a full walkthrough of the controls and features, etc.?
That's what's covered in this video - a direct comparison of us collecting a Long Range Tesla Model Y from Bluewater and the Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo from Porsche Centre South London.

28:04 Journey to Porsche Centre South London
    40:33 Porsche Taycan Collection

I just completed a 6,000 mile US road trip in my 2021 Model 3 SR+
Over 13 days of driving (July 10 through July 31, 2022, with time in Kentucky) from Sacramento CA to Louisville KY and back (with numerous side trips), I drove nearly half what I drive in a year.
The final analysis: Wow. This is definitely a road warrior vehicle, despite so-called “conventional wisdom.”
I am still plugging in metrics and numbers, but I estimate about 60 charging stops. In all those stops, I only had ONE 5 minute wait, at Glenwood Springs, CO. One. 5 minutes. I’ve waited longer in a grocery store line.
I drove through and charged in major cities (LA, Amarillo, OK City, Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Salt Lake City) and countless small towns and wide spots in the road. Typically, I was either the only one there or one of two Teslas. My typical stop was 20-25 minutes. Enough time to have a short walk about, use the bathroom, grab a bottle of water, and then get back on the road (the breaks, and auto pilot, assured I’d be rested and relaxed after hours of travel).
Weekdays, weekends, rush hour, nighttime, huge supercharger (50+) or small (4), interstate or blue highway… I drove and charged through them all. No cherry picking.
~60 superchargers. 6,000 miles. 13 days of driving. In July 2022. One wait. 5 minutes.
I can’t speak for others. But a complete success in my book.

Had quiet a different experience picking up my model 3 in Germany. Had a guy showing me the car and I could asking questions. Also some glue marks were removed on the spot 😀

Fantastic - how it should be!
Unfortunately Bluewater is probably one of the worse Tesla collection centres in the UK (if anything due to the volume of vehicles they deal with).

I really think you deserve to be a much, much bigger channel! Such interesting content and useful buying advice. It is nuts that Porsche don’t fit heated seats as standard!

Interesting comparison and the Model Y collection exactly matched my experience. Not surprising as my reg was close to yours (***LWE) Amusingly the only slight defect was also an intermittent rattle from the rear somewhere . Tesla Chelmsford responded quickly with an appointment to investigate and a further ranger visit to my home in Ware which is much batter than past experiences with a Rangerover. Sadly the rattle still happens randomly - did you locate the cause?

Forgot…Google Maps. I like Apple Maps but the icon for position is so far behind I would miss my turns and really piss me off.

Having just purchased a 14 plate i3 BEV for 10,500 from BMW (the most I have ever spent on any car) the amounts of money these cars cost stuns me.

Well put together video. Only recently subbed and liking your work so far, thank you. I feel like teslas are cheap for the superior in many ways technology and infrastructure you are getting.

Thanks you for the nice words.
With the entire company being organised differently and challenging the tradition, you are getting great value for money in terms of the product, if you are willing to do things exactly the way Tesla wants you to.

Hello thank you for your video, very interesting. I have reserved the Tesla Y due for delivery Sept - Nov 2022 (atm). Can I please ask did your Tesla come with the rear boot parcel shelf? When I reserved my car the sales person told us all the teslas Y now come with the parcel shelf. Thank you.

Our Model Y did not come with the parcel shelf but we have also heard that the newer vehicles now come with one...

Google maps for me .... the shadowed buildings help me during turn referencing, more detail in a finer presentation, Waze is a bit Disney 👍

Have you guys got a view on aftercare for Tesla? The body shop I use refuses to repair them because they find it too much hassle establishing precise parts they need to effect repairs and find Tesla support seriously underwhelming. Is that your experience as would hate to buy a Tesla and then be without it for months if the worst did happen? Shocked at the blemishes and dirt on a new car too. I guess you pay your money and you make your choice, but that isn’t how I want to buy a car.

Sent a tweet to Elon that he needs to watch your video and fix the delivery process. My new BMW i3 was 100% when I left the dealership last fall…39% or whatever on that Tesla? That’s disgraceful. All the flaws and lack of care on the Tesla. Really?

My conclusion : Tesla are making and selling a lot of cars. If Tesla can make a smaller car at scale they will eat a lot of car firm's lunch, and dinner. Porsche will move to be a more niche firm.

Your Porsche was at 100% charge because they ignore the 85% daily guideline. Porsche black paint is also garbage. I own a Porsche and they are far from perfect despite what fanboys say.

We have a couple of videos coming soon on the Taycan. Whilst it's a lovely car (which Arthur has been thoroughly enjoying), we can confirm that the technology / the paint are definitely not perfect. 😅
