Located at the top of a heritage protected building in one of Lisbon's oldest industrial areas, the aptly named Marvila attic was completely transformed by KEMA Studio using sustainable, durable materials like fibre cement panels, metal and brick. Focusing on opening up the space and maximising natural light, KEMA removed all internal walls, creating an open-plan layout with seamlessly integrated kitchen, dining, and living areas. Nestled under the sloped roof, the living room features a full height storage wall, with a clever niche for a sofa that doubles as a single bed. A section of the kitchen is hidden within the living room storage unit and revealed by sliding pocket doors. The addition of 4 new skylights, two dormer windows and the clever placement of mirrors illuminates the space creating an open and airy atmosphere. With its clever design, this apartment optimises space and light without compromising comfort, making it a true gem in Lisbon's industrial heart.

Wow, I love what the architects have achieved in such a small difficult space. The hidden storage is abundant throughout the apartment and I’d love to lay in bed and watch a lightning storm

The before pictures really show the work that has been put into this. From a bleak, depressing apartment where dreams go to die to a beautiful, airy and dreamy space!
Breathtaking lines and diffusion of light. The space is almost sculptural but not pretentious. I could rewatch this all day 😍
They have done an amazing job despite the challenge of working with so many wall and ceiling angles. I especially love the integrated storage wall in the living room and being able to have part of the kitchen hidden away definitely streamlines the room and makes it appear more spacious.
I love the recessed sofa, integrated storage and partly hidden kitchen. Light and lines and airiness in such a limited space is lovely.

Pretty, but I am absolutely certain that it'll be a greenhouse during the (long and very warm) Lisbon summer. I wouldn't be able to sleep in that bed, it feels like a tomb. I also wonder how would someone make the bed or change sheets and how would anyone feel comfortable in this bathroom (how would they sit on that toilet seat without banging their head on the skylight, for example?). For sure the architects did the best they could given difficulty of the space, so kudos for that!
Per a reply to another comment, the channel says it is well insulated.
I've showered in a coffin sized stall. It's impossible to shave one's legs, but other than that it works.
Anyone taller than average would not be able to wash dishes (unless the skylight is fully open).
The shower is 115 per 80 cm (it uses the space behind the vanity) and actually it has even a built-in bench. The height in the front of kitchen sink where person stands is 1,85m to 2.00m high. It´s actually very comfortable. The roof window provides this extra hight.
@@Nyx773 IMO, the insulation won't be enough. It will need air conditioning and ceiling fans to keep it cool.
This was a very awkward space, and I love that they embraced it and leaned into it. I love attic spaces because of the interesting lines created by the eaves and dormers. A favorite touch for me is the narrow niche shelf in the bedroom that is clearly only there to accommodate the air vent in the ceiling. But how fun to make it a little niche shelf!
i love how this apartment gets so much light from the skylights and windows... kudos to the architects for creating such a cool space!

This is a stunning transformation in my view and one of my favourite apartment renovations featured here. The Architects have taken full advantage of the space, the view, incoming light and internal reflection of light. A wonderful use of space using thoughtful, crisp design elements. The natural light coming in is crazy, it's so easy to let light fill our homes. Truly brilliant, makes it look like such a bigger space.
I think this is an excellent example of an adaptation of a small space into modern useful and pleasant apartment. Making use of all sorts of nooks for additional storage is an additional plus!

Love Lisbon. More people are relocating to Portugal. These architect designers did a brilliant job by using all these unusual interior features while incorporating natural elements, blue sky, sunlight, air to bring bright light into the original darker space. This is a marvelous transformation👏

The texture/lines in the material used for the storage wall is gorgeous. I also like the pull-out cupboard just inside the door for coats and shoes.

Nicely done! As a former resident of Lisbon, having sufficient natural light at home is such a nice benefit. If I could change one thing it would be either the color or the material used for the storage space in the living room and kitchen areas, as it gives the appearance of cardboard when all the doors are shut.

Brilliant use of space and light and hidden storage - which is so practical! A simple and elegant but sensible! One idea I had is the space near the kitchen - with the window ...instead of a trolley with plants (which the scale is off - needs to be bigger IMHO) instead have a hanging herb garden! Love this creative work!!!

I love that they took advantage of the skylights to give the space a feeling that it's larger than it actually is. Having a low ceiling matters much less when there's always a widow with a nice view.
