I love this version by Pomme. Goettingen was written by famous French singer, Barbara, back in the 1960s. Barbara was of Jewish origin and had to hide from the Nazis during World War 2. The city of Goettingen invited her to come and sing. She hesitated because of her wartime experience with the Germans, but decided to come. A French jew wrote a love song about a German city. This song helped to transform relations between the two peoples. It had a huge impact and helped the French people reconcile with their former oppressors. Now, a new generation has taken up the song.
Yes and if you like this song and as much as I love Pomme I advise you to hear the original version from Barbara. Barbara is by far the most emotional French speaking singer I know ( my opinion ). So emotional that many people cannot listen to her....

@@dilletente6801 Personnellement, je suis plus touchée par Pomme que Barbara qui m'a toujours laissé froid (ce qui ne m'empêche pas de reconnaître son talent). Tout ça reste très, très personnel. Je ne comprends pas trop le "cette fille chante faux" ?! Aparté : et chanterait-elle faux (ce qui n'est pas le cas), ça n'est pas forcément dérangeant. Dans l'Aigle Noir par exemple, Barbara est souvent un peu fausse mais cela participe d'une certaine façon à l'émotion partagée. Et je pourrais citer des tas de chanteurs qui n'ont pas des voix parfaites non plus (Dylan, Palace Brothers - Wild Oldham -, Villagers...) mais qui feront toujours passer 100 fois plus d'émotion (de mon point de vue toujours) que Céline Dion ou autres chanteuses aux voix parfaites mais qui me semblent froides.

I’m a Chinese living in France for 10 years now. Just learnt about this song from a Chinese podcast talking about the recent conflict between Palestine and Israel. The podcaster (Wendao Liang) put this song in the end wisely. The children of Paris, or Gottengin, in Jerusalem, they are the same. I’m a mother of a 2 year toddler myself, the babies don’t care about nationalities. Sometimes they fought, but mostly peace and love. I hope all human beings could live in harmony like this as Hanna Arendt said: I have never in my life 'loved' any people or collective - neither the German people, nor the French, nor the American, nor the working class or anything of that sort. I indeed love 'only' my friends and the only kind of love I know of and believe in is the love of persons.
As a french-german kid I can't relate more to what you've said. In France or in Germany, or in China, or in Israël or Palestine, the children and people are all the same. They are just as friendly as every person you know and hating someone because of their origins is truly sad.

It's so beautiful! I almost cried to tears. Though I grew up in China, I admire the beautiful years in Göttingen before the war, when great mathematicians like Riemann and Dedekind met, and Göttingen was absolutely the world center of math and human intellect. I hope more people could hear this song and its story, could set aside hatred and embrace each other, with a heart of equality, love and compassion. Love is music and it transcends everything.

Even today, a photo hangs in the Jugen Theater in Göttingen, my home town. I thank Barbara that she sings about my home so beautifully and that she has ensured that every Frenchman knows my home. If you ask a Frenchman about Göttingen, he sings the song and tells you that it is a city in Germany. If you ask a Frenchman where any other city is, the answer is less often correct. Except for cities like Berlin and Hamburg. The song is just great and for me as a Göttinger it is always nice to walk through the rose garden and to think that the roses are sung by her :)

Fantastic show of spirit of reconciliation and moving on, a master piece. Now this cover by Pomme is quite pleasant and nicely packaged, but it is easy to score high when you stand on the shoulders of giants, I prefer the original from Barbara, a remarkable song!

The French and the Germans are much closer and more similar than many people think. Die Franzosen und die Deutschen sind sich viel näher und ähnlicher, als viele Menschen glauben.
More similar? It depends: Germans from Hamburg, Berlin, or Bavaria? Frenchmen from Lille, Brest, or Marseille? But I agree that we are now close. We share a complex history, and for decades now it has been a history of cooperation and friendship. Similar or not, we share a lot. This spirit was symbolised by that famous song. And Barbara soon sang a version of it in German.

Aparté : et chanterait-elle faux (ce qui n'est pas le cas), ça n'est pas forcément dérangeant. Dans l'Aigle Noir par exemple, Barbara est souvent un peu fausse mais cela participe d'une certaine façon à l'émotion partagée. Et je pourrais citer des tas de chanteurs qui n'ont pas des voix parfaites non plus (Dylan, Palace Brothers - Wild Oldham -, Villagers...) mais qui feront toujours passer 100 fois plus d'émotion (de mon point de vue toujours) que Céline Dion ou autres chanteuses aux voix parfaites mais qui me semblent froides.

Damien Saez, j'avoue, ne me touche pas non plus, trop emprunté justement, comme s'il en rajoutait, à jouer un peu un rôle (ce en quoi je me trompe peut-être, c'est juste mon ressenti). Ça peut paraître étrange qu'on ait des perceptions un peu opposées sur ces artistes mais intéressant finalement.
Et pour aller un peu plus loin, des artistes qui me touchent et me transportent comme les Fleet Foxes, Jose Gonzalez, Mari Jürjens, Alina Orlova, James VincentMcMorrow, Tété.
Après, je me rappelle avoir lu qqch qui m'apparaît avec le temps de plus en plus vrai. J'ai l'impression qu'on aime (immédiatement ou non) viscéralement des artistes-chansons-oeuvre et qu'ensuite, on essaye d'y coller une explication rationnelle (dans le sens où par exemple, à propos de qqn qui ne me touche pas, je pourrais dire "et en plus il chante faux" alors que pour Palace Brothers qui me fout des frissons, je vais dire "l'important, c'est pas la justesse de la voix"). L'important, c'est d'échanger les ressentis et qu'on y trouve tous notre compte (aaaaamen) ^^

The podcaster (Wendao Liang) put this song in the end wisely. The children of Paris, or Gottengin, in Jerusalem, they are the same. I’m a mother of a 2 year toddler myself, the babies don’t care about nationalities. Sometimes they fought, but mostly peace and love. I hope all human beings could live in harmony like this as Hanna Arendt said: I have never in my life 'loved' any people or collective - neither the German people, nor the French, nor the American, nor the working class or anything of that sort. I indeed love 'only' my friends and the only kind of love I know of and believe in is the love of persons.
As a french-german kid I can't relate more to what you've said. In France or in Germany, or in China, or in Israël or Palestine, the children and people are all the same. They are just as friendly as every person you know and hating someone because of their origins is truly sad.
It's not a conflict it's a colonization like when France called l'Algérie ""française" for 132 years and till now control the money value of some African countries. Informer vous.

It's so beautiful! I almost cried to tears. Though I grew up in China, I admire the beautiful years in Göttingen before the war, when great mathematicians like Riemann and Dedekind met, and Göttingen was absolutely the world center of math and human intellect. I hope more people could hear this song and its story, could set aside hatred and embrace each other, with a heart of equality, love and compassion. Love is music and it transcends everything.

Even today, a photo hangs in the Jugen Theater in Göttingen, my home town.
I thank Barbara that she sings about my home so beautifully and that she has ensured that every Frenchman knows my home. If you ask a Frenchman about Göttingen, he sings the song and tells you that it is a city in Germany. If you ask a Frenchman where any other city is, the answer is less often correct. Except for cities like Berlin and Hamburg. The song is just great and for me as a Göttinger it is always nice to walk through the rose garden and to think that the roses are sung by her :)

Great song from Barbara. A mile stone in the "rapprochement franco-allemand". More remarkable given that Barbara was Jewish and had to hide from the German and the collabos during the war. Fantastic show of spirit of reconciliation and moving on, a master piece. Now this cover by Pomme is quite pleasant and nicely packaged, but it is easy to score high when you stand on the shoulders of giants, I prefer the original from Barbara, a remarkable song!
It makes me smile to hear this wonderful version and knowing that I lived in Göttingen for six years.

There comes a time when that freshness it shall be lost but many other things shall be gained. It all depends on the freedom that is sought. Good luck and work to stay as free as possible. Try to be faithful to its musical, poetic and vital concept.
