pretty dumb how they used a 1.6 NB. The 1.8 NB has a lot of the compact light nature of the early NA but has substantially more power. That's what I have, a 1.8 NB
Yeah, wasn't really fair to have a 1.6 NB. The NB Mazdaspeed solves the girly look and the lack of power with a factory turbo. Best looking out of all of them too, except maybe the front end of the ND (don't much like the rear end of the ND).
I was like, "how did he fuck that up, he mixed up the NA and NB models", then I realized that Europe and some other countries had a 1.6 options for the NB. That must have truly been gutless.
Buck Turgidson the BP-Z3 VVT engine? Thought that made 152bhp? But I've also heard that it only makes 6 more than the BP-4W which I'm certain is only 140bhp so you could be right
Quenton Millstid Not sure of his reasons for not having a turbo but for me, I didn’t turbo my mk2.5 because, well, the 1.8 was taken out and the Jaguar V6 rocketeer conversion done on it. No replacement for displacement haha. Creamy power delivery and fuck me the sound

Why would you compare a 1.8 , a 1.6 , a 2.0 and a 1.5 ? You should have gone with either the smallest or the biggest engines of each generation and not mix them together like this. -.-
@GF W Yup! Kinda wish I didn't get an NC1, since I blew the motor in it, 09 and newer have much better engines with forged internals. On the plus side of blowing the motor, I did a 2.5L swap which is a lot more fun than the stock 2.0L!
@@EZCarnivorehey ! Looking to buy it as my first car, the NC2. How much does the annual maintenance costs, and is there anything I should know? Thanks!
Owning an NC I can say if your steering gets heavy when pushing there is something wrong with the car. Also the electric roof is an option. The default is a manual roof with only 1 latch (centre), so its actually faster then the previous models.
Interesting that if you had chosen the 1.8 NB you can get them standard with 140hp and 1025kg due to lack of ABS etc. Also depends on which final drive/ diff you had in each model, you could have had a really lazy 3.63, or the 4.10 even the 4.3 on the earlier ones. The difference between an overweight NB with the wrong gearing is huge compared to the lightest weight model with a better final drive, let alone modifications. I know it was a bit of fun, but there are too many variables on the models to do a fair comparison :) More NBs left for me I guess.
i agree with the last fact..your car always be the most awsome even tho is not fast or great but it puts a huge smile on your face every time you step the gas pedal a little more
I just got an '04 NB/Mk2 for my first car and I'm very happy with it, I think it looks great, glad to see it has a fair amount of fans in the comments!
That there's 'not enough engine" is the point. Who races on dual carriageways? It's about applying full throttle at the earliest opportunity. Without relying on electronic intervention.
Totally agree, NBs are beautiful cars and best MX5 IMO. They also resemble the RX7 FD. Unfair contest though, hmmm NB 1.8 RS has 160HP, they're not exactly slow. Not to mention the mazdaspeed turbo.
Russell J B Hate to tell you mate but the RS NB didnt come with 160 bhp, More like 145 bhp. NB would still be my choice though as loads of them about for roughly the same price as the NA but abit newer.
Well this is a very unfair comparison for the NB. Here in the US, a stock NB2 LS/SE would destroy any stock NA, even the 1.8 M edition. You got more brace bar down in the bottom, a strut bar, lower ride height with firmer suspension, vvt for longer peak torque, factory tubular header, bigger brakes, more power. Don't get me wrong NA is cool, I had a 1.6 and it's fun to drive, and definitely an icon. But the performance isn't even close compared to my current 02 NB LS w/ 6 speed.
+jingxian tan Forgot the Torsen limited slip on that. I didn't even know they made a 1.6 NB. I believe the NB is one of the better ones and the NC to be the ugly fat duckling .
It's marmite...loads of people love them and loads hate them...personally I think the NB looks disgusting standard but looks awesome when modified. But the NA looks good as a standard roadster and even more awesome when tastefully modified
I'm partial to the NA I think they're the best looking of all the miata/MX-5s. That being said, I only had 2 problems with the NB. The first was a minor thing. The door handles on the NB were hideous looking. It's like Mazda gave up on styling and just decided to rummage through their parts bins and found some extra Millenia/626 handles and said ok, on they go. This choice completely messed up the side profile of car. I don't know why they just didn't slighty redesign the nice chrome pulls of the NA. In short the door handles on the NB were way to big in my opinion for such a small car. The other thing I think was wrong eith the NB and also the NC and ND is they feel cheap. The NB felt like a less well built product then the NA. I have a NA personally and have driven a NB. The NB felt cheap to me. I felt like this was more a FORD product as opposed to a mazda product. What I love about my NA is that didn't feel cheaply built. It was the one thing Parent company Ford wasn't intruding on. They had a hand in just about everything else built by Mazda EXCEPT the Miata/MX-5. Then with NB and NC they decided to throw there hands all over them. Other then these 2 things the NB was a decent car.
Why didn't you get a NB RS?!?!?! 1.8l and 6 speed it would have beaten the NA easy!! geeze CT get yo shit together should've have got the highest spec NA, NB, NC, and ND together instead of mix and matching the faster models against the slower version models!
Didn’t get that in the UK and it’s quite rare, the 1.8 SVT would have been their best option but I guess it would have just blown the NA away and he is of course biased
Haha I thought the same thing, I recently sold my rx8 and got an nc mx5. NC is my favorite. ND has a great looking rear end tho. Dunno what they were thinking with the misplaced fender flare on the front fenders, other than that it was near perfect.
Not even halfway through the video and I'm already saddened by your take on the NB. It's my favorite of course, but I feel like you should've used one of the later NB models with a 1.8 and torsen LSD. Or maybe even the factory turbo Mazdaspeed, which I still think is the best of them all in stock form.
+JustKyzuuh I also think this comparison is extremely unfair because they aren't on the same tires, and you used the nicest version of the NC vs the normal NA, and less power NB. Totally not fair IMO
I'm an NC driver, and though I still get all the hair dresser comments about my car I don't care. It's a rear wheel drive, two seater convertible, and it handles beautifully. End of.
Clearly unfair towards the NB, I suspect probably because Alex has an NA and didn’t want to go on camera and admit that the NB is better, which is why they used a 1.6 to help prove their “point”. NB is the one to have over the NA any day of the week.
I've got the Mk2.5, with the 1.8L SVT motor, the 6-speed and the LSD. The facelift (I think) fixed the weak styling of the original Mk2 with the lower bumper, the 1.8L pulls better and the 6 speed gives you more ratios to choose. The LSD and extra bracing from the factory make it handle really well. I think that, stock, it would stack up quite well - but I've also got a front sway bar on it, and some Potenza RE003s and it's amazing (could do with more power if I had the money, though). It's my favourite model, and I bought it over the cheaper NA and older NCs which were within my price range. Love that ND though. I'd buy it if I had new-car money.
+Jay R Oh yes, I forgot that too. The front ones are vented discs as well. I mean, if they're going to compare a special 2.0L 25th anniversary edition of the _heavy_ Mk3, and even a 1.8L version of the super light Mk1, the least they could do is not compare it with the _shittiest_ 1.6L version of the Mk 2.5. I mean, they don't have to bring in the SE Turbo version, but it's kind of lame when they pick the shittiest version of the one they hate, just so they can hate on it for things that are mostly fixed in other versions.
There is something that is eternally cool about pop up headlights, that is why I have always liked the first generation MX-5. One day I want to own one.
Very bias against the NB why not use the 1.8? If you had the scores would of been different. The first drag the NA would be last and the last drag (minus the jump start) would of been 3 points to the NB. So the final scores would show: 1st = MK4 - 15points Joint 2nd = MK2 - 9points / MK3 - 9points 4th = MK1 - 7points But obviously this is CarThrottle so the NA can't lose.
Styling is of course subjective but I couldn't have disagreed more. The current Miata has been universally praised for its styling while the NC was panned. To my eyes the NB is much better looking then the NA and it had a host of improvements over the NA, including, in America anyway, a more powerful engine and a 0-60 in the mid sevens. The stock NA could never match that. I even showed this video to about a dozen guys who all said the NB looked better then the NA. But then we find out that the NA is your personal car, perhaps a little bias was coming through, LOL. That's ok, I might be a little biased toward the NB as I am currently on the hunt for one.
MK1 Miata used to be often stereotyped with hairdressers during its heyday in the 90s, but still selling very well among all groups of car lovers. Now thanks to the demise of pop-up headlights right before the start of the 2000s era, NA Miata is rapidly becoming a modern classic.
Its funny how nowadays everyone views 100-130 bhp is pathetic... For me 115 bhp for my car are perfectly fine. My dad's old Audi 90 quattro 2.3 was 136 bhp and it was still faster than 170 bhp BMWs. Anyways...Good video as always!
Thank you for recommending this again TH-cam, a good throwback to see how phil and car throttle has improved as time goes by. Still waiting for V6 Phil documentary!
Like others have said, do the same with the STI line! I really wanna see how the earliest generations (like the Impreza Turbo) compares to the newer models. I reccon that especially the difference in weight has a lot to say in how they behave. I wanna know if the STI is actually still a proper STI at its core! :)
I just got a 94 NA and I love this thing….does it have some rust…yes does it have some small issues yes…..but is it fun as hell to drive…hell yes and all those little things can be fixed easy👍🏻 she does have a newer paint job new custom tan leather interior, working ac, and rebuilt transmission with a new clutch👍🏻👍🏻 it has no power steering and has all the spoilers to which I think it’s an Rspec pkg and 94 was the first year👍🏻 even has the Rspec aluminum wheels in gloss black!
I recently got a black 2015 Club Edition..removed the red stickers on the sides and on the dash. Has the 10 spoke factory black wheels. I freakin love it!!! From most everything Ive seen its preferred over the 2016. 😁
There's also the fact the NC has a 6 speed gearbox that can cope best with any power increase. I think they reverted to the NB gearbox for the ND, but the turbo Fiata needed the NC 'box. [And, unlike the ND, the NC has 4(!) proper cup holders.]
The 2005 NB and 2006 NC, when similarly equipped, are within 10Kg of each other in weight. The NC has more power, more rigid chassis, better brakes, and is far safer in a crash.
i have owned 2 NAs, an NB, and NC-1. The NB was my least favorite. i prefer the 1997 NA. Now owning a 2006, I do appreciate the added space, but ti does feel so much bigger. For driving across country, the added space makes it a bit easier without losing the driving fun. My first choice remains the 1997 with the supercharger. I looked at the ND, but there was too much going o in it. The NB just never grabbed me - the ex got it in the divorce but i wasn't heartbroken over it.
Elizabeth, did you actually drive the ND or just look at it? A short drive in the ND was all it took to convince me that my NC needed to go. It is without question the best Miata I've ever driven. Sure, I lost some storage & very useful cupholders, but the difference on the road was well worth it. Now I just need it to quit raining at every autocross so that I can finally drive it how it was meant to be driven.
Daniel, No, I didn't drive it. I sat in it and was getting the feel of what was there, so about a half hour sitting behind the wheel, engine on and off, but not driving. it was at the end of a busy day in Tucson and they have shitty drivers with rush hour making it worse. I intended to go back, but haven't been able to yet. Nearest dealer is 2 hour drive from me and I don't much care for it. I prefer the Phoenix dealers. I did get offers from Tucson to Phoenix from dealers wanting to buy my NC, including the dealer I bought it from. Have you driven the NA? It will be hard to convince me that something is better than my 1997s. It's why I ended up buying a 2nd one when my first one was used up. (I put over 200k on it.) I am not into all the electronics and screens telling me info. Mine doesn't even tell me my gas mileage. In AZ, it's a lot of down and dusty driving for me so I cringe at what that would do to the tablet and such. Since I know I can turn off some of the advanced functions, 5 years from now I might buy a used one. I don't want a car that drives me, but when I am older maybe I will change my mind.
the NA and NB miata soft tops are so quick and easy to put up or down one time me and my friend put the top up while driving at about 50 mph. it was a team effort
My favorite roadster of all the times. I would be happy with any generation. I had the chance to drive a NA (1.6L) Miata years ago and, I liked it. A few years later I drove a NA (1.8L), a "M edition" to be exact
PizzaPunt the gearbox on the s2000 is regarded to be the best 6 speed ever. the throttle response is amazing with the mechanical throttle body. the pedals are short and precise and very heavy. everything in the car is so perfectly built around precision and sharpness.
angus white Yes, NC miata is the worst of the bunch, its not light, its not gokartish, its not raw nor powerfull. But my comment was about ND miata, and this one is faster from 0-100km/h than S2000.
The NC is where it's at. They're impeccably reliable. Mine reached 97,000 miles yesterday, but it still runs like it were brand new. I checked out an ND out of curiosity and the ND is really quite disappointing. You don't get a glove box or any cup holders. You get a display unit and Bluetooth connectivity, but there's no shortage of aftermarket options to put stuff like that in an NC or earlier model still. Besides, I carry around a giant monitor anyway because my phone is a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. Some variations of the NC, including mine, have an iPod connector. All in all, the NC is the perfect MX-5. They don't make 'em like they used to.
ND is literally miles ahead of the NC. A really big step up in evey direction from engine character 7500 redline, to chassis stiffness, aluminium usage and weight

umad bro? don't come raging on my post.
@@quentonmillstid850 I do. I like to actually enjoy my car for how it is and keep it reliable
we brits were not designed to say "miata"

I'm an NC driver, and though I still get all the hair dresser comments about my car I don't care. It's a rear wheel drive, two seater convertible, and it handles beautifully. End of.
EcirpWehttam Let them talk, they probably drive a boring VW golf or something.
I've now owned my NC for 3 months and never got any comments, in fact, everybody I took for a drive loved it
I love my NC, but I think my favorite is the NA. So cheap and easy to repair, yet loads of fun to hoon around in
A black NB, that’s my little dream car and a black ND RF is a close second.
Should've used a 1.8 nb....
that's what I'm sayin
Far out, you absolutely NAILED the impressions when it comes to the aesthtics off the car!
The 2.0 sport NC with the soft top is the sweet spot and at over 6’3” the one I fit in
Aw man why not use the 1.8 NB, haters!
Best purchase I’ve ever made, I love my 2007 Miata so much!!!! It was worth everything! Thank you for the great video!!!!
I drove 90 miles in my ND with a 42 lbs .50 BMG rifle sticking out the top :D
Got some great looks from other drivers lol.
+Nicholas Fisher It also has bigger brakes :)
Damn the NB is my favorite one, it probably doesn't help that you that you happened to get a 1.6 spec, we don't even have a 1.6 nb in the states haha
I have fun in an MX5 down the B roads and I live in my Bongo full time. Mazda has made my life complete!

I say Alex for the new top gear crew!
NC is my personal favorite, the best looking inside and out

I'll be joining soon. I'm trying to get my hands on the gen1
Its the miAta mafia ffs
Ayyy, 96 NA8!
There is something that is eternally cool about pop up headlights, that is why I have always liked the first generation MX-5. One day I want to own one.
A turbo NA Miata was the car that made me into the car enthusiast I am today. Will always have a soft spot for them.
I always think the first has the biggest soul.
and the cutest smile! :3
Very bias against the NB why not use the 1.8? If you had the scores would of been different. The first drag the NA would be last and the last drag (minus the jump start) would of been 3 points to the NB. So the final scores would show:
1st = MK4 - 15points
Joint 2nd = MK2 - 9points / MK3 - 9points
4th = MK1 - 7points
But obviously this is CarThrottle so the NA can't lose.
the first model looks way more beautiful than the others (my opinion)
oh yes
And because the small lights under them.
I've a nb 98 1.8l in orange and I love it, my engine has 83k and my chassis got 178k on it, I also run a decat. It's amazing.
The NB is beautiful in my opinion
1.8 NB is pretty lively vs the 1.6
"You can get one of these for just £1000."
Pain.
9:40 wow those were really the best impressions of a car's face I've ever seen
Look, I don't even care about the results or opinions. This is the best formatted review I've ever seen.
DANGER TO MANIFOLD! DANGER TO MANIFOLD!
RandyButterNubs00
Wrong car dude you need to find one on the Mitsubishi eclipse
You should have got more equal cars. More powerful NB, NA with ABS (Mine has ABS) etc.
Hahaha the face impressions on the models by Alex were so brilliant :')
MK1 Miata used to be often stereotyped with hairdressers during its heyday in the 90s, but still selling very well among all groups of car lovers. Now thanks to the demise of pop-up headlights right before the start of the 2000s era, NA Miata is rapidly becoming a modern classic.
I'm think of buying a 1995 mx5 and this video made me want to buy one even more. 🤩
The Internet has ruined it. Try being in America with under 500 hp..
Yep...or having some small 5.0 engine..
I want a Miata so badly

Do a Datsun 240z/260z/280z/300zx/350z/370z please!!!
S30 over all the other Z's
+Ivan Deanda agreed
That would be too easy. 240z is best followed by 370z,350z, 300zx, rest are poo.
Eww🤦🏽♂️
Thank you for recommending this again TH-cam, a good throwback to see how phil and car throttle has improved as time goes by.
Still waiting for V6 Phil documentary!
Only just found this show after getting top gear withdraw symptoms... I love it.
Like others have said, do the same with the STI line! I really wanna see how the earliest generations (like the Impreza Turbo) compares to the newer models. I reccon that especially the difference in weight has a lot to say in how they behave. I wanna know if the STI is actually still a proper STI at its core! :)
Please do a review on Honda S2000 1st gen. It'd be so interesting to watch.
You should have done it so that it was every generation had either the biggest or smallest engine available, but oh well, wasn't a bad video
You guys are awesome and I loved this video. I really wanna see one done with the gtrs and maybe even supras.
Well looks like I can't go to bed for another 18 minutes and 21 seconds....

+Ramy Warda its fucking 5 am

There's also the fact the NC has a 6 speed gearbox that can cope best with any power increase. I think they reverted to the NB gearbox for the ND, but the turbo Fiata needed the NC 'box. [And, unlike the ND, the NC has 4(!) proper cup holders.]
Lol you can see the number plate which says what year the car is made (Maybe some of them are personal plates)
Will car throttle reply?
Yes
+Car Throttle That's all I needed to know :)
+Car Throttle i hate you for no reason
+Car Throttle your left rear brake light is not operating correctly
+Car Throttle Hi Car Throtlle.
The NB is beautiful. A bit of low and wheels and they look phenomenal. NC's are ugly, heavy and gross. Easily the worst MX-5.
Couldn't agree more - the NB gets undeserved hate, where the heavy, ugly and complex NC gets underserved praise
(I put over 200k on it.)
I am not into all the electronics and screens telling me info. Mine doesn't even tell me my gas mileage. In AZ, it's a lot of down and dusty driving for me so I cringe at what that would do to the tablet and such. Since I know I can turn off some of the advanced functions, 5 years from now I might buy a used one. I don't want a car that drives me, but when I am older maybe I will change my mind.
the NA and NB miata soft tops are so quick and easy to put up or down
one time me and my friend put the top up while driving at about 50 mph. it was a team effort
Actually, I can put mine up at 70kph, I just wait for the first drops to fall!
I really love his personal MX-5!! That's a great build! Great video man :)
You should try the ND with the 2.0. Fits the car better than the 1.5
no
the Nb has 1.8? and the 01+ ones have a butterfly brace and vvt. the yellow banana with a 1.6 was not good representation tbh
Did anyone else hear the lifter knock on one of the cars? I can't tell which one though
My favorite roadster of all the times. I would be happy with any generation. I had the chance to drive a NA (1.6L) Miata years ago and, I liked it. A few years later I drove a NA (1.8L), a "M edition" to be exact
"and you can pick these up for a thousand pounds" famous last words
1 Million is so close !!! :D
Too bad you didn't use the top range engine for each model for a more accurate comparison..
+Flyingdutchy33 The NB would have dominated them all.
You think? What about the 2L engine in the newest one... I doubt the other ones would be able to keep up. Dont get me wrong, I'd have the NB.
Mazdaspeed NB.
That does not count though. If it did, all the Honda boys would be saying something something Spoon/Mugen instead of which factory car is fastest.
+Flyingdutchy33 But the Mazdaspeed Miata is a factory car....
Mazda MX-5 2.0L: 158bhp
Honda S2000 2.0L: 240bhp
But the s2k hasn't got soul. the gearbox, throttle response and pedal weights on the mx5 is wayy better
PizzaPunt the gearbox on the s2000 is regarded to be the best 6 speed ever. the throttle response is amazing with the mechanical throttle body. the pedals are short and precise and very heavy. everything in the car is so perfectly built around precision and sharpness.
Mazda MX-5 2.0L: 158bhp 0-60mph = 5,8s
Honda S2000 2.0L: 240bhp 0-60mph = 6,3s
according to zero to 60 times:
2006 Mazda MX-5 Miata 0-60 mph 6.6
2006 Honda S2000 0-60 mph 5.4
but mx-5 is a lot cheaper. you get what you pay for.
angus white
Yes, NC miata is the worst of the bunch, its not light, its not gokartish, its not raw nor powerfull.
These generation videos are always cool. Even if it is just because you get to see all of them together.
