I think the origami killer is very well written, as both a twist villain and as a character.
The idendity of who the origami killer Was truly blow my mind, His origin, Especially the scene with his brother dying Was really heartbroken and His Motivation is rather complex.
That game was so fucking good it was like watching a movie

I love Spec Ops: The line, the story was so good
Spec Ops: The Line's story was amazing including the meta narrative. Notice in the very first level there's a stop sign, before you even begin the game is warning you. And Walker's hypocrisy makes it to the player, be it condemning Riggs for destroying the remaining water after you helped him do that or 'judging' two murderers after you've killed your way to that point and beyond. It's an experience for sure.

Spec ops the line had one of the best stories in any game ever, it's not just there to shock you or make you emotional, it's a game with a message.

The game has you under the impression that you're in an elite unit of soldiers combating terrorists and liberating a country, but halfway through reveals that you were actually in a death squad quelling a resistance against an oppressive government

Until the resistance turned out to be just as bad as the PMC's.

I get so giddy whenever golden sun gets a shout out. Spent a lot of my childhood playing the first two. Such underrated titles!
Spec ops the line is a very underrated game, the gameplay and storyline is very good

Spec ops: The line blew my mind when the reveal came. I wasn't ready for it.
I'm not surprised that Shujinko was a villain, but I was surprised, & quite frankly disappointed, that he had no loyalties to an clans or groups in the MK universe. He just seemed like the nice guy who wanted to please everybody.
Also liked the hints with Booker DeWitt and his sinister history, be it him being the 'hero' of Wounded Knee or having been a Pinkerton agent so brutal the company ironically tossed him out.
The amnesia route only works nowadays when the reveal comes at the very end. When I start a game and we have "Amnesia" I'm always like oh, "so I'm the villain"

I'm debating whether Kotor 2 should be included on this list, mainly because the protagonist is a wound in the force and can choose to slay masters of the Jedi Order, but if they pick the light side options, the masters are drained of all life by a member of the Sith Triumvirate.
Also, I think the Bard's tale should also be on the list, for a similar reason that you've been trying to rescue a princess who ends up being an evil demon witch.
Yeah but the character meetra Surik is a jedi and is canonically a light side jedi she isn't secretly the villain but you can choose to be.

Spec Ops: The Line's endings will forever scare me.....and that White Prosperous scene......gut wrenching......that poor kid....

I read an interesting theory that the whole plot of the game Spec Ops the Line is the near-death hallucinations of dying Captain Walker, whose helicopter was shot down at the very beginning of the game, while chasing rebel helicopters
Spec ops the line is really perfect example but Prototype 1 is kinda bit confusing, since the main problem is the virus itself
I was aware Shelby was the killer before I played Heavy Rain because I did not know I would be able to play it so I looked up the game's plot years before I actually played but I wanted to see the actual gameplay, looking back it gave hints right away that Scott was clearly the killer, the most obvious first clue for me was that he said to the store clerk whose son he killed that Shawn was kidnapped by the killer even though in the scene right before with Ethan Blake was saying they thought he might have run away, there was no way Scott would have known that quickly unless he was the killer.
Oh Golden Sun. This is me putting it out there in the universe. I wish Nintendo and Camelot would remake those games. Or at least continue that amazing series.

Dunno if they already did this but another good list would be protagonists in movies/tv shows that were actually villains. Unforgiven, American Psycho, and Nightcrawler comes to mind.

Unforgiven's William Bonney, I wouldn't really call a straight up villain. He is a reformed villain whose doing bad things for the right reasons. I think the corrupt sheriff who tortured a working girl is the villain in that story. Eastwood's Bonney is the definition of an Anti-Hero.
@@williamthomas3359 The sheriff, Little Bill, didnt torture any working girl, as a matter of fact he is the only major character in the movie that is conscientious, kinda ethically and morally correct in that world, even the torturing of Ned (Morgan Freeman) is kinda acceptable since Ned was a killer and he (lil Bill) was trying to get info on the other killers that were fucking up his town (you dont want killers roaming around your town looking for a bounty) also even with the prostitute that got slashed, he got the owner of the saloon and her a good deal (i think it was 8 horses, the best one was going to her, which in that time and world its fair, even she was kinda of accepting).....but the oldest prostitute in a vengeance rage mode, fucked that up and it brought death and destruction to the whole town. Now William Munny, is definitely the purest definition of an Anti-Hero character, he was (and still is as we saw in the film lol) a vicious killer, who was in atonement mode for the rest of his life for the horrible things he did in the past (I love that the film didnt use cheesy flashbacks for him but you just know he is the real deal, hes that guy) and when he finally takes that sip of whiskey (which is a recurring thing in the film) you know he was going to fuck up everything in his path. William Munny one of the baddest mfers ever portrayed on film.

The Witch's House let's just say the reveals in the true ending have a unique villainous twist and Spec-Ops the Line being on here is no surprise.
I was really shocked at heavy rain I would've never had thought the PI was the killer I just finished that game a couple of months ago

I’ve played the Golden Sun games and I can definitely say that it was shocking to learn that I was originally fighting to destroy the world instead of saving it like I thought.
that was only Golden Sun 2...in the first one you were doing the right thing...Isaac is the only one who can save the world...Felix can't. So technically you aren;t villain when you play as Isaac. Also golden Sun was meant to be a quadrilogy but it got thrown under the bus...we never really learned the full story. there are theories though. If Isaac and his friends/ family were see nas villains...and a dark clan appeared in the last game that was made (part 3) then a lot of people theorise that part 4 would have resulted in a light clan appearing and them trying to restart the world and slaughter everyone as punishment.
All of this could've been avoided if Saturos and Menardi hadn't been so arrogant. They didn't even try to go out of their way to explain the situation to Isaac and the gang because they underestimated the kids. It's also kind of on the writers because I still don't understand how these two psychos can come from a place like Prox.
@@Keycil actually if you learn the full story the fire clan that Saturos and Menardi were part of did try and explain that they needed to get into the Sol Sanctum peacefully first. they were with a group prior to the events of the main story and asked the people of Vale if they could go in but were denied entry...so their group tried to go in by force...that was how they lost their group the first time and we only saw the end of that in the game when they came out and were saying "to think the it could cause such a storm" and then they notice young isaac and garet watching them.
@@IDyce88 they did try to tell it to the other villagers. However, they didn't bother with the group of powerful alchemist children chasing them across the continent. I don't know, I still think it's on them for not giving it a shot and instead fusing into a huge dragon to murder the kids.
The ending of Immortal Unchained had me clapping at the end. Definitely check it out.

i knew most of these, thanks to whatculture gaming, to me it was just a matter of "which order are the top 3 going to be in" rather than "What are they?". However there are a few on here I didnt know. Cool :) Out of all of these Ive only played KOTOR and SpecOps, though I finished neither (blame ADD and MMOs, not the plot!). The Braid one I thought was super-clever

We know we said no moral choice characters, but Darth Revan is a special case. Let’s say there’s an ultimate evil that you have to defeat. Now let’s say that ultimate evil had a master, who disappeared. A Star Wars interpretation to the phrase, “I learned it by watching you,” it turns out you’re the former master of the game’s main antagonist, Darth Malak. The Jedi had Revan’s memories wiped so he -- or she, depending on your character -- would no longer be a threat. It’s up to you what you do with that information, but the fact still remains: long ago, in a galaxy far, far, away, you were its biggest threat.
#2: “Spec Ops: The Line” (2012)
The life of a soldier isn’t an easy one, as they not only put their lives on the line on a daily basis, but they also have to make some difficult decisions. The horrific events that go on in the game are bad enough to deal with, ranging from choosing who to execute, to accidentally using white phosphorus on innocent civilians, but it all comes to a head in the game’s gut-wrenching conclusion. Konrad, the game’s antagonist, is revealed to be a traumatic hallucination of Walker’s. The real Konrad committed suicide, and Walker’s been using him to try and rationalize his actions.

We could place the blame on Dormin, but honestly, Wander’s not innocent in this, either. At no point does he question Dormin, but worst of all... we don’t question him, either. We’re so used to saving the girl and taking out the towering creatures we encounter in video games that it never occurs to us that maybe, just maybe, the colossi are the good guys. Also... why is Lord Emon pursuing Wander to begin with? Who is this girl we’re trying so hard to revive? And... how did she die? Like any good game that makes us feel bad for our actions, these questions go unanswered.

But that wouldn't really matter since you can choose to be evil instead of just being evil from the start which is not the same thing and also both good endings are Canon

@@ToughBeifong but having the choice to choose to be good or evil does matter because the point of the video is you don't know you are the villain but that aspect is completely taken away when you can *choose* to be the villain
@@MrLoverman7134 but you don't know that it's you until you kill Kessler. Then you find out that it was you all along from the future. It's the same with night of the Old Republic where you get to choose to be good or bad and you find out you were the sith Lord the whole time. The surprise that you were the villain in the end is still there.

Anyone else expecting infamous? I think the game is actually better than the plot twist of you being the villain in hindsight. It is more like you are both at different times and that the path to becoming the villain is inevitable.

My favorite was well not so obvious throughout the games but: Isaac Clarke, why you may ask: ‘he’s a hero’ in my mind no, because after the Ishimura infestation were he was one of a few survivors EarthGov gathered intel on the marker from his brain, if Isaac had died aboard the Ishimura the infestation wouldn’t happen aboard Titan Station and a million people would’ve lived. Or Atleast that is what I think.
Surprised to not see Far Cry 5 on this list as you could be seen as a villain in that game as well.

Planescape: Torment still has the greatest story I've encountered in any game.
Why isn't The Last of Us mentioned? It's protagonist (Joel) is arguably the biggest villain of all time since he stopped a cure being made that was the only hope of saving humanity. His motivations were selfish and understandeable but the result is there would be no cure and no end to the apocalypse

I think the point of the list is is where you're actions throughout the game further villainous goals without you knowing. Joel's actions throughout the game was to save humanity. His motives only could be viewed as villainous at the end, as you pointed out, but we know what we are doing is wrong. They are referencing games where you think you are the hero, but your actions throughout the game are actually hurting others.
Joel wasn't really a villain. Ignoring the fact that the way the fireflies were attempting to create a cure was scientifically impossible, the fact is human societies are coping well with the apocalypse. I mean humans have basically retaken entire towns such as Pittsburgh. The problem as with most zombie media nowadays isn't with the infected, it's with the humans. Pittsburgh may not be populated by infected, but it is populated by Hunters who kill anyone who isn't them, same with Seattle. And a cure would do absolutely nothing to stop these people. Do you think the Hunters are just going to surrender to probable execution simply because a cure has been invented? Of course not. Hell not even the fireflies are good people, after all you can find tapes where Marlene says she had to convince the others not to kill joel, whom up to that point had not wronged them. And that presents another problem: How are the fireflies to cure everyone? The vast majority of the United States is populated by either Hunters or the military (which wants to destroy the fireflies). Even groups like the WLF might not necessarily support the fireflies. Effectively the cure would most likely only help the fireflies themselves, not everyone.
And even if the fireflies could cure everyone and even if that would solve the problem of humanity being a bunch of savages, that does not make Joel the villain. At the end of the day saving a 14 year old girl from certain death, regardless of if it will help others, is not a villainous action. A point here being: where do we draw the line? If we can cure cancer by killing a 14 year old girl do we do it? What about if it ia guaranteed to end a war immediately?
The morality of TLOU is sooo murky (except for David, the sadistic cannibal), you could say that almost any character in that was both villain and hero. Joel is certainly no different. He is a true example of an anti-hero. Very murky morals, but became a loving father figure to Ellie who fit a very large hole in his live. As other have said, it wasn't a sure thing to create a cure and Joel couldn't take the chance that it would work. The most villain-like Joel became is when he straight up lied to her at the end of the story.
Ah yes, Joel. He makes Captain Martin Walker look like a saint.
Doing hideous war crimes is one thing, but not allowing for a cure for a zombie pandemic to be developed is clearly something else.
But that said, at least Joel has a moral compass and all he's doing is to survive, unlike Walker whose actions are nothing but a delusion.
