- The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening first thoughts/review nintendo switch is an upcoming action-adventure game developed by Nintendo EPD and Grezzo, and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is a remake of the 1993 game for the Game Boy that retains the original title's top-down perspective and gameplay, along with elements from the 1998 remaster Link's Awakening DX. The remake features a "retro-modern" art style unique within the series with toy-like character designs, diorama-like world designs, and tilt-shift visuals that evoke the original game's presentation on the Game Boy. It also features customizable dungeons which the player can create and then complete for rewards. It is planned to be released on September 20, 2019, with two special editions available at retail.

I'm looking forward to playing this game and all, but way more so than that, I am REALLY hoping this game outperforms expectations sales-wise and inspires Nintendo to remake the oracle games.
That would be nice. Not just the oracle games but Minish cap as well.

I just wish they would stop remaking games and make a new 2D Zelda,just re release the handheld ones on the Switch,possibly even the ones with touch controls with the touch controls replaced by normal Zelda style controls,like you can patch the roms to do.

I really need to play those. Link's Awakening was my first Zelda (aside from Zelda 2, but I don't really count that), and it is one of my favorites. But I never got around to the Oracle games. I think I'd love them
i think its doubtful we would get an Oracle remake since those were published by Capcom

@@jamesortiz6312 I played it when I was really young, and for someone that age it was incredibly hard so I never got too far into it. Also, the amount of side-scrolling areas made it feel different from a traditional Zelda. Those things aside though, I played it again when I got older and I enjoyed it more then
Once upon a time there was a young boy. One day the Boy got a gameboy with Links Awakening and his life was never the same again.
The boy realised that a game can be more, it can be a whole new world, a magical place full of mysteries, and adventure.
Fast forward today the boy will have the chance to give his son his first console (A Switch Lite) with the "same" game and let his journey begin.
The boy feels really blessed. :)

The one for the Gameboy color was the one I played. I loved it! I couldn't believe there was a remaster! My desire for a Switch grows every day.
This remake has me curious if we could make a good remake of Zelda 2 and make it MUCH better this time.

True story. I got my first summer job in 1999. With my first paycheck i blew it all in one day. I bought a gameboy color and links awakening dx. Took several years to beat it because i would only play it during summer vacations.
FYI i still have that same game boy color console and the same copy of links awakening i bought 20 years ago.
I'm very excited for this game!! This was the first Zelda game I played back in 93 and I fell in love with it . I also still play this game every once in a while . I'll never get tired of it .

So super excited for this game. Got it preordered, in the special collectors edition. Links Awakening was the very 1st game I purchased, myself, with my pocket money for my inherited Game boy, and I still own my copy to this day

The DX version deserves more credit in getting kids to experience this game when it came out. I was so excited to get a new dungeon to the old version and see the game in color when the series had always been in color before that.

My friend Ryan from summer camp (a program for kids whose parents were at work in the summer) had Link's Awakening back in '93. He would let me play it for a few minutes, or I would just watch him. I ended up getting the game for Christmas that year, and it was the first true adventure game I played and finished. It will always be one of my favorites, right after BOTW and Wind Waker
I didn’t play links awakening back then cause I didn’t exist yet. But a few years back I played it during a bad ice week. For a week straight the roads were dangerous to walk on let alone drive so school was canceled. I downloaded it on my 3ds and spent the whole week playing the game. Completed it, 100% I played it so much I even dreamt of it, the music is forever embedded into my brain. I can’t wait for this remake, I can’g wait to show this to my daughter.

Link's Awakening DX was my first Zelda game, so it's near and dear to my heart.
At first I didn't like the artsyle, but it's grown on me for sure.
I wish the original nes zelda would get the remake treatment.

I found this gem as a kid (also in Vancouver) in 2000 and loved it. It was one of the biggest adventures on the Gameboy and I played it a lot. But I don't remember beating it. I have it also on the 3DS and I played through about half of it until I heard of the remake and now I'm just waiting for this one to come out. Can't wait!
This might sound stupid but this is my most anticipated game of all time so far. The only thing that could possible top it is a earthbound done in the same exact style... I would straight up have a heart attack
A lot of people complained about the style when the first trailer was released. I genuinely liked it and if I had a switch I’d totally get this game. Eventually I’m sure I will. The switch has such great titles.

I've always felt that Link's Awakening was one of the best Zelda games ever made. I'm glad that there are going to be a lot of people discovering Link's Awakening for the first time with this version.
Both Link's awakening and Majora's Mask are arguably two of the best written Zelda games. They are also unique compared to other games of their genre.

I've never been able to go through the first Zelda, just because I'm so used to quality-of-life aspects of later entries and also the graphics, so a remake in this style would be most welcome.
The subtle sound effects make me want this game. Link's footsteps at 5:00 is pure ASMR to me.
I loved Links Awakening for GB. Definitely my favorite handheld Zelda to date. So I'm sure this game will meet my expectations!

A remaster is solely a reskin of an otherwise identical copy of a game, occasional addons (unique drops, etc) being frequent exceptions. Examples: Link's Awakening DX for GB Color, Grim Fandango Remastered for any system, Homeworld Remastered Collection for PC.
A remake is an homage. It does not use the original polygons, sprites, or renderings from the original piece, but may keep story elements, gameplay and stylistic elements in common. Examples: Link's Awakening for Switch, Blaster Master Overdrive for Wii, Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu for Switch.
An interesting example of a title with both types of remake is GoldenEye for Nintendo 64. It got a remake for Nintendo Wii in 2010 and then a remaster of the remake for PS3 and XBox 360 in 2011.

The creator of LA was heavily inspired by the show Twin Peaks which was being broadcast during the game development...how cool is that?!!! Imo LA is the best handheld game of all time. Cannot wait to play this next Thursday!! Bro your art is amazing too btw I would buy and frame that piece.
I see you and I have the same experience with this game. I have been hoping for this for so long and when it was announced, I was driving in my truck and scrolling down facebook(safe, I know), so I pulled over and watched it and freaked out about it. Six long months.. but the time is nigh!
Seeing the sidescrolling parts makes me want a new Adventure of Link style game. Something that does 2D platforming in a way that's distinctly Zelda. Then again, games like Metroid, Castlevania and Wonder Boy give that concept a really tough act to follow.
Your artwork kicks butt! Awesome! Personally, I can take this or leave it. I actually played the original recently so not really bothered with a graphical upgrade but am buying this for my girlfriend thats just got into zelda and completed between worlds.

I think its the weirdest Zelda game and my first Zelda game. BOTW and Links awakening are my fav Zelda games. I recommend you stay away from spoilers cuz the ending might hit you pretty hard.
Hey brother, I'm up way too late; enjoying this video - which inspired me to finally get this game. So excited to do my favorite routine when a is about to be released: I go back and check out ALL of the HCG content/videos to learn as much as I can but only the night before the release!
Does anyone else feel like $80 is too much to charge? I definitely would enjoy playing this but can't justify paying $80 for 10-12 hours of storyline gameplay. Will catch it on sale down the line.

Unfortunately I wasn't lucky enough to play any Zelda games, so I preordered Link's Awakening plus the amiibo and I'm so exited. Also, I'm currently playing Link to the past on the SNES switch online and it's fucking phenomenal. Thank God for making me a Nintendo fan! ☝🏽🥰

100% sure i'm going to buy this next week. I'm 50 years old and still love Zelda. the cute graphics, gameplay so fine tuned, sound effects and music...can i say more, well done Nintendo. Also 100% sure they will make a remake of Zelda 1 NES and Link to the Past SNES, we need them too :-)

This one of my favorite games of all time... I got it used with a used gameboy color. Oh such great memories. On the E3 when the trailer starts with the water, I got shocked! My brother told me it could be anything else... After that trailer, I chased on Amazon and did my pre-order once it got published...
Link's Awakening has always been my favorite 2d Zelda game, no other Zelda game struck me like this one. It has that magical aesthetic, the first time you venture into the woods to the north it was an experience like no other. BUT the one gripe I have (and I'm sure many others do) is the $60 price tag for a game that really doesn't have any new content.
Very cool there's a harder mode, but the chamber deal seems lacking. I wish I could download other people's chamber creations. For a creator it seems very limited with your options. I'm sure everyone was dreaming of the day we'd get a Zelda Maker, but this seemed to be barely a dabble in that field. Not enough content to warrant a $60 reenvisioned GB game

Link’s Awakening was my first Zelda game and I fell in love with the series. Then shortly I discovered The The Ocarina of Time which was the best adventure I’ve ever been on outside of Pokémon until Breath of the Wild.
I have very fond memories of the original, played it a lot as a kid. Definitely one of my most anticipated games of the year as well. Just a few more days. \o/

I beat this game so many times on Game Boy. All of the footage you showed just made all of those memories come back strong. I remember all of those sections, the dungeons were so much fun and I loved the little Mario references in them. I would stay home from school "sick" and hide under the covers with my worm light and just play this game until my hands were numb! 😂

When 3D Dot Game Heroes came out on PS3, I thought how cool it would be to get a Zelda game with that style visuals and Link's Awakening comes pretty darn close!
The only thing holding me back is the price. It's hard to justify picking up a 10-15 hour Zelda experience after paying the same for Breath of the Wild, which was not only exponentially bigger, but also a fresh, new experience as opposed to a remake of a Gameboy game.

My first ever Zelda game so I’m excited. I never beat it because I was too young and it got pretty hard without a guide (back when you had to purchase a printed one). So I’m happy to actually beat it now some 20+ years later.

I really stopped collecting games as I did a few years ago. But damned if I don't pick up a remake of my first virtual adventure, of which I have so many fond memories replaying it over the years, on my current favourite console (perhaps ever), with a limited edition that contains a steelbook shaped like the original game boy running the original game... While my LoZ collection is still 99% perfectly complete (with the exception of the insanely expensive Oracle games in a combined box, and that stupidly rare Majora's Mask limited edition)
As much as I'm excited for this game, I can't put into words how much I LOVE Astral Chain. Even if Link's Awakening was my most anticipated game of the year, Astral Chain deserves GOTY for Switch so far imo.

Even though I played this as a kid and it taught me how to read within the dialog it had. I think my most anticipated game of next year, Cyberpunk 2077. Will be something that I really hope lives up to my expectations due to me waiting for the game for 7 years. So close yet so far as they say. Loved this insight on the remake/remaster Johnny! :D
I'm really looking forward to this game, I played the original on my mom's gameboy before I even knew how to read and it was tons of fun. I bought it from the eshop a while ago to play. Hopefully if this does well we'll get a few more remastered games
This might be the next Zelda I play. This or SS for Switch. I never got to play either of these but Link's Awaking Remaster looks so adorable. I love that it has the giant snake that moves in circles from LTTP, which for the longest I thought you had to run through the monsters tail to hurt it instead of just slicing.. made it 10x harder 😂
