    Thank you Jason. Yours are the best Spark videos I've found. It's so great to see footage from someone who actually bought one and waited and waited and waited like the rest of us. Your videos make waiting for my amp to arrive a bit easier. The vids from the guys who got a free Spark quickly in exchange for a positive review just annoy me lol.

      Yes! I've had for about six months now. I use it almost every day. It's actually better than I expected. I love to play a few chords into it then have it come up with a rhythm track that i can jam with. I compose solos and lyrics while it loops. Endless fun. Thanks for asking.

    Jason - I have an Ipad mini 2 I beleive. I can use garageband with my spark 40. When I listen to back to the recorded guitar in garageband from the spark 40, the volume is low and the quilty is not even near what I'm hearing through my headphone hooked up to spark amp. When I listen back I can hear the effects from the spark amp in garageband but something seems off... Just doesn't sound the same - guitar tone from headphone vs. the recorded guitar tone in garageband. If that amkes since... I'm using the correct cord from amp to Ipad. I have the master volume around 70%-80%. Anything else I'm doing wrong?

    This doesn't sound like a stereo recording to me. Ive been told the Spark amp USB connection is a MONO signal. I'm getting the Spark in about a week. Ive also ordered a mini-stereo-male to dual 1/4" mono male plugs. Im assuming that the headphone signal is stereo, as this is touted as a stereo amp. Theoretically, plugging this cable into the headphone jack of the amp , and the 1/4" inputs on my audio interface should allow me to monitor and record in stereo, and take advantage of my studio monitor speakers and subwoofer to improve the sound even further. Can't wait.

    • @cleverdood
      @cleverdood  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If anything I think it would be dual mono. I just got one of those cables so I’m going to try it out. Either way, there are no stereo effects on the delay or reverb pedals or any interplay between the L and R channel that I could hear in headphones, but I know some folks say “it’s stereo”.

    Got my Spark after waiting three months. Well worth the wait. Updated its firmware on day 1. Great sounding easy to use amp I use every day practicing. Sometimes connect to my 800watt high end sterae for big awesome high end sound quality in stereo. Connects to my PC easily, Connects to my Android phone and tablet reliably and fast. App works great, intuitive to use, great tones easy to adjust to your taste, but is not required to use amp. Understandable wait considering this amp is pre purchase, the COVID pandemic closing the factory for a bit, the virus impacted factory suppliers and delivery systems world wide. Pditive grid kept me informed, a good company.

    Hi Jason do you know if the spark amp is compatible with the ipad pro 2021 as an audio interface for recording in garage band. I have tried to connect my spark amp to my brand new ipad and it isn't being recognised in garage band as the channel input. Instead GB is recording the dry guitar sound from the mic of the ipad instead of through the spark. I'm using apple cables and connector so I can only assume its not compatible with the newest ipad pros. I've reached out to positive grid with this question but no reply as of yet. I really need an answer because if the spark isn't compatible with the ipad then I'll return it and get a cheaper model. Have you experienced this issue at all?? Is there anything else I can try as I can't help thinking I've made an expensive mistake 🤦‍♂️

    • @cleverdood
      @cleverdood  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s worked for me with that setup. There is an option on the bottom left while in track mode view that lets you switch the input between mic and usb. I’ll take a look again as I haven’t recorded with it in a while.

  • @sammydogjesse

    Hi Jason. I ordered a Spark and I was under the impression I would have to jump a cable from the headphone output into my Focusrite interface to record in Logic on my Mac. Just watched your video “recording with Spark” and it appears that if I use the usb out on the Spark to a usbC input on the Mac, Logic will see the Spark for recording guitar tracks. Is this assumption correct. Thanks, Jeff in KY

    • @cleverdood
      @cleverdood  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct! Just hook it up by USB and you’re all set! You’ll see “Spark 40” as an audio option. I set the output to my interface though.

  • @kenr.b.891
    @kenr.b.891 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Spark is a good sounding amp and I am happy with the sound, athough, it does seem strange that to be able to record into a pc, you have to go into settings and change the input AND OUTPUT to Spark. With most other amps, you just install a driver and it shows up as a input option in your DAW/pc...easy peasy.

  • @tylerdurden5893
    @tylerdurden5893 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Am I the only one who thinks it’s insane that Spark literally has a recording section built into the app but you can’t actually use it to record the signal from the amp itself? What is the actual purpose of that part of the app then? I was hoping to play through headphones and be able to record that way but somehow that isn’t an option. Unless I’m missing something that really stupid.

    • @cleverdood

    Hi..Im using a regular iPad with lightening connector. I have an adapter which has a lightening plug to allow charging and a regular usb which has my usb B cable from the spark to that connection. The input volume from my guitar is VERY low when I record. I have the Master volume at max on the spark. Do you think the adapter is a problem instead of going straight in from the spark usb B to the iPad and I'm losing input volume??? I cant find any other settings for the input to boost it. Guitar volume is on 10 as well. Any thoughts ??? Much appreciated with any ideas you may have.

    • @cleverdood
      @cleverdood  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      it might be the adapter, it might also just be picking up the guitar sound from the iPads mic instead of the cable?

  • @AnnaLaug
    @AnnaLaug 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is the trick - recording in say, Cubase on a PC? You’ll have to download the sparkusbASIO driver from positive grid. (Would be nice if they told you this) and every time you want to record with it you must change to that driver (which I find to be a pain.) It tries to change my sample rate to 48kHz. And to listen to what you’ve recorded on your monitors you have to switch the driver back etc. Not ideal for firing off multiple takes. But just amending this great vid from a pc perspective;)

    Jason,
    Can you record using Spark amps as your input into a Mac with Garageband and monitoring while you record? I tried monitoring and it was boomy and had lots of latency...ugh.

    • @cleverdood
      @cleverdood  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Garageband doesn't have any setting to deal with latency so I usually turn off input monitoring and listen to my guitar through the Spark directly. I'll either use ear buds to hear what's coming out of GB, or my studio headphones with one ear piece off.

    Thanks for the video. I'm following your instructions on using the Spark with my IMac. However, when I want to use distortion from GarageBand it seems to lose some amplification capabilities (with a weird fuzz, not as an effect). I did lower the output on the Spark and have been using the Noise Gate to control to this. It sounds better but still sounds funny. It seems I can't use the Sparks interface program? Or download the Sprak app into my IMac? Can you clarify this?

    Question: I’ve read that the Spark doesn’t record tracks in stereo but only mono when direct lined in. Is that true and is there a workaround? Thank you and great video 👍👍

    • @cleverdood
      @cleverdood  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's mono only but it doesn't matter because the effects aren't stereo anyway - meaning there is no interplay between the left and right channels. If you really really really wanted to record in stereo, you could mic it with two mics, one at the edge of each cone...but I don't think that'll make a difference.

    This is amazing. Thanks so much for this. My spark is on the way and now I can forget purchasing an interface for my iPad Pro. Just need to order the cable. Can you make a video of you recording heavy distortion with palm muting (chugging/breakdowns). Thanks again!

    • @robmpps13
      @robmpps13 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jordan C hey, so I’ve already received my spark about two weeks ago. I also recently purchased a MacBook Pro so I’ve been doing some recording with that and the amp is by far better than anything else I’ve used before. Since I picked up the MacBook I haven’t tried using the iPad Pro to record but, I will attempt to sometime soon. I’ve noticed the tones you can download sound better than anything I can create. However, all the tones I’ve found need to be tweaked a bit to sound good in recordings. The main issue I find is that since I use a lot of palm muting and chugging, I always have to turn down the bass. I have had a couple issues with the spark though. One is the amp will randomly freeze and will not pump sound at all, either digitally or out the speakers or headphones. I have to unplug the amp for about a minute and retry. Second issue is the connection to my iPad, sometimes it will not connect. I think these issues are a bit problematic to consistently record but when I just want to record some riffs I’ve come up with it’s amazing. Another issue I’ve had is that I ordered the gig bag/carrying case with the spark and it has not arrived yet. However, they informed me that they were delayed in an email sent a couple weeks ago as well.

    • @AnnaLaug
      @AnnaLaug 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey UTUT, I do a lot of palm muting and chugging myself. I love those tones but yea, recorded they are a bit muddy so I’ve had to treble up a bit myself. But I’ve had no technical difficulties in the department you mentioned. The thing is with positive grid running so behind I’m not sure I’d hand anything over to them for repair at present anyway. Ha. But that sort of sounds like a malfunction you’d want to address in a new piece of gear. It seems everyone agrees in one way or another; The Spark has awesome potential (perhaps even the beginning of a new kind of amp - rather than practice amp, perhaps studio amp???) but is filled with rough edges depending on how you use it. My next experiment will be recording from the headphone jack as a stereo output and compare the quality of that vs. the usb fiasco necessary to record in a pc daw:)

    • @robmpps13
      @robmpps13 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jordan C yeah I did read your other message about the issue with the daw on pc. I have not experienced the issues in about a week but I haven’t played much either. I’ve been using a boss katana air to record and love the tones but since I received the spark the tones are just so much better I usually just plug in and play with headphones for hours at a time. Just not everyday.

    • @cleverdood
      @cleverdood  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      for this test, the I/O setup in GB was the Spark but I turned off software input monitoring for the track I'm recording to avoid feedback/latency. The Spark is basically going to act like a monitor, same as if you were using a regular audio interface so you'll hear all the other tracks from Garageband while recording. You'll hear your live playing through the Spark amp itself, but with input monitoring turned off, you won't hear the Spark signal coming back out of GB.

    Trust me, if you have an amp with a USB out that goes silent when used you end up suffering a bit because you either go through the whole chain or end up miking the darn thing while wearing headphones effectively negating any of its advantages.

    Does anyone know if Garageband needs drivers etc, for a Spark Amp, its not recognizing the input in the garageband software.

      no, it doesn't need drivers. If you press "CMD + ," that'll open up your audio preferences and you should see "Spark 40" as an option. If not, check your "audio/midi setup" in your system preferences.

      This thing is new. So obviously we’ll all know more soon. I do love the tones I’m getting on this gizmo. But I’ve never recorded via usb. How do I find it in Cubase pro 10? Do I have to manually switch from my Motu interface drivers and engage the Sparks?! And if so, it’s not showing in my list of available drivers. Finally, do I have to have the app connected. I’ve got presets saved on the hardware. But maybe the app is part of the necessary signal chain. Clearly I don’t know. But I loved your to the point video style. Even if you don’t have these answers? You still have a new subscriber. Thanks man :)

      Yeah I think sometimes the software of the amp gets conflicting signals from Bluetooth and the phone/tablet spark app...sometimes if I play for a long time I can’t even switch my sound settings using the knobs and buttons on the amp itself like it’s frozen or something...just disconnect everything and reboot everything that’s using the amp

      Yes, assuming you’re connecting via USB, you can turn the output knob on the Spark to zero and in your daw, set your input to the Spark device and the output to your focusrite. Another option (on a Mac) is to create an aggregate device of the Spark and Focusrite. On a PC you’d need the ASIO4 All driver to do this.

    • @cleverdood
      @cleverdood  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      depends on which DAW you're using, with Garageband, there is no option to reduce sample sizes (which reduces latency). Logic Pro X has latency compensation, and other paid DAWs for PC and Mac will have options for that as well.
