I was in elementary school in the 70s, and Asian. I always loved Soul Train. Much thanks for exposing to the best American music ever. Don Cornelius RIP
I’ve been listening to Ben E. King music since I was a kid back in the 70’s, but when I heard this for the first time just 5 months ago I was pleasantly surprised. HOW did this funky song get past my hearing it after all of these years. What a gem listening to it now. Ben got funky on this song. To see him on Soul Train from back in the day is like icing on the cake, because even though I watched ST about every Saturday I never so this performance of Ben. YT is the place to come to find the classics. 4-sure. 🎼🎼🎼👍🏾
First heard this in 1974 at the sombrero club in Kensington played by the DJ Ronnie archer Morgan who now appears on antique road show 😂. He had the best Taste in music then and the best eye for style now
On this day in 1975 {April 18th} Ben E. King performed "Supernatural Thing" on the Saturday-afternoon syndicated television program, 'Soul Train'... At the time the song was at position #12 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, two weeks later it would peak at #5 {for 1 week} and it spent fourteen weeks on the Top 100... And on March 9th, 1975 it reached #1 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Hot Soul Singles chart... Between 1960 and 1980 the North Carolina native had twenty-five records on the Hot Soul Singles chart, five made the Top 10 with two* reaching #1, besides the above "Supernatural Thing" his other #1 record was "Stand By Me" for four weeks in 1961... Mr. King, born Benjamin Earl Nelson, passed away at the age of 76 on April 30th, 2015... May he R.I.P. *He just missed having a third #1 record when his "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)" peaked at #2 {for 4 weeks} in 1962, and the #1 record for those four weeks was "I Can't Stop Lovin' You" by Ray Charles... In addition, besides his above three records, his two other Top 10 records were "Amor" {#10 in 1961} and "Do It In The Name of Love" {#4 in 1975}...
Yeah we had so many great soul artists and the music was soooo goooood. I’m so blessed to have been a kid in that era enjoying all that great music in real time as it was being created and played on the radio for the first time. There’s no real R&B these days.
I guess many people did not read "Supernatural Thing" was actually written by TWO people. I loved & lived with Gwen since we were in college before becoming professional musicians. We wrote this - and many songs - together. Mainly, I am happy we made people 'break out in little bitty green spots' because of our music. Thank you!
No, I wrote the song with Gwen Guthrie and, coincidentally was later married (annulled) to Gwen McCrae for a short time. How did you know about my connection to Gwen McCrae? Not many people know about that!
And the Soul Train Dancers, who had "seen it all", "heard it all", and "danced to it all" really reacted in a big way to this one. I love it too - in fact, my "new" favorite of all of Ben E. King's hits (and he had many, by himself and with groups)
The first song that came to mind when I heard of his demise is Your love is a Supernatural thing because my mom now deceased used to play this song over and over again. RIP Great Artist
I watched this on a Soul Train episode that I had recorded, last night. Loved this. When Don Cornelius asked him about the "new sound", Ben said he sang this in an octave higher than he usually did (as in "Stand by Me". Anyway, just love this. Makes me want to join the Soul Train dancers!!
Ben E King was inducted into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL of FAME as a member of The DRIFTERS. He led on some of their biggest hits.(THERE GOES MY BABY, I COUNT THE TEARS, THIS MAGIC MOMENT, SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME,DANCE WITH ME, etc.) But after leaving them, he had so many SOLO hits , he deserved a SECOND induction . Aretha covered several of his hits, as did a LOT of other people : SPANISH HARLEM, STAND BY ME ,DON'T PLAY THAT SONG, AMOR AMOR, I WHO HAVE NOTHING, (covered by Tom Jones), and numerous others... He had over 25 chart hits as a solo artist.
I was UNBELIEVABLY happy to hear him on the radio with a new song at the time...and MAN did he hit on a groove with this one! He hadn't had a hit in 13 years and coincidentally it was in the US national top 40 along with John Lennon's version of "Stand By Me". This was April of 1975.
I first heard this on a rerun of Soul Train back around 2006, when I was 17 and I went all through my father’s album collection to find this. I played this song as if it was 1975.
Damn love this song but I don’t know why it remind me of Richard Pryor for some reason lol like imagine if Richard Pryor was a singer 🤔😂 rest in peace Ben E. King you’re truly legend wish I could come see you perform
@secallen: Sorry, but THIS is the original of this song. Banshee did a remake. This version was done in Spring of 1975. Sorry, dude, you dont know your Soul music as well as you thought. You people love our music but always want to take the credit for it. If you can't handle the original then, stick to your own shit.
One of the coolest jams of the 70’s….so good
This is what you call talent.
Premier cruising jam from the badass 70’s
The best of the best of times if I could bring those times back I'd do it right now. A good Jam
