It's the 1st game of the season and Benjamin Russell High School (high school of NFL great Terrell Owens) in Alexander City, Alabama is super excited about the 2023 season! They have their sights on winning the 6A Alabama State Championship! They have one of the most talented offenses and the best receiver group in the state! The leader of the group is 4 star (should be 5 star) Malcolm Simmons (#0) who is committed to play for Auburn in 2024. He is hands down the BEST athlete I have ever seen in person! Not only is he an amazing receiver, he could also be a D1 punter. He holds state records in the high jump, triple jump, and long jump! He's also an amazing basketball player with over 1,000 points. And he does not disappoint in this 1st game of the season!
But before BR can have a shot at winning the state title, they have to beat Wetumpka in the 1st game of the season. Wetumpka High School has won the last 13 games against Benjamin Russell! BR is out to prove something tonight!
This is a great glimpse into what it's really like to play high school football in Alabama! School spirit, pep rallys, and small towns shutting down the city for Friday Night Lights!
As far as the Murphree Boys...Micah Jr (11th grade) is the starting kicker and plays outside linebacker. Collin (9th grade) is the back up kicker and plays receiver as well.

Schools used to be afraid to play Benjamin Russell. Now, it's a damn shame how that school has lost respect. The stadium isn't packed out. It used to be standing room only on both sides.

Yeah that's what we have heard. We have only lived here a couple years and the 1st year the support/crowd was pretty low but last year we had a great year and the support/crowd was a lot better but still not standing room only. I hope we can get that level of support back! Are you from Alex City?

I grew up in Greensboro, NC where HS football was lit. I ended up moving to Columbus Ga and then Phenix City AL as a kid as well and our HS games were amazing. That being said, I now live in Westerly Rhode Island, where one of the oldest high school football rivalries are, over 100 years. Im amazed how hype this HS gets it up in New England. Check us out!

Oh wow that sounds awesome! Yeah, I'll have to look into it! I grew up in Cullman, Alabama and high school football was big there and the whole town shuts down on Friday night and the school spirit is great with the students. And similar when we lived in Auburn and in Hoover. But when we moved to Venice, FL it was different. They had a great football team and football was big there...they won state a couple times but it wasn't the same atmosphere and basically no school spirit and support from the student body. Nor did the town shut down on Friday night. Still great football and great athletes but not nearly the same atmosphere as in Alabama. Thanks for sharing that! Blessings!
