    I love Lovecraft's use of language it is so musical in its sense impacts like a piece of music so good that you can hear it millions of times and it never ceases to thrill you with terror. He was a true genius in my humble view.

    Really like Lovecraft's use of language. The narrator is great. Perfect voice for these stories. I always listen to this narrator when I have a choice.

    God, that ending. The way his madness slowly takes over. The way his speech gradually devolves into older accents, older dialects, older languages, inhuman sounds, all paralleling Exham Priory's deep, ancient history built on older and older generations and civilizations, all drawn into this madness, into this cannibalism. Probably the scariest moment in all of Lovecraft's stories.

      @gabrielblanchard3921 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ivanasukjadic1423 Unfortunately, despite the neutral origin of the word in Latin, the *English* word is a highly insulting and inflammatory racial slur. It would be nice to hope that Lovecraft didn't know this, or that it was considered normal in his day; but, well, all writers have flaws, and one of his was being *very* racist even by the standards of the 1920s and '30s, which were a lot more permissive. It doesn't ruin his stories for me or anything -- hell, that's why I tune on videos like this one in the first place; like I said, this one is a particular favorite of mine -- but it's frustrating to be insistently reminded of a petty nastiness an author you like freely indulged. (Things might be different if the cat having that specific name contributed to the story in some way. But obviously in this case you could change the cat's name to, well, anything *not* a racial slur, and the story would stay intact.)

    As a born blind listener, I find it difficult to comprehend some authors like Lovecraft and their obsession with the supposed racial origins of various peoples as either low or high born for in my life rich or poor I have a low opinion of humans as a whole. Perhaps, it is due to my visional impairment that I was not socialized as my sighted counterparts. All I know for certain is that everybody lies so to me we are inside the same a mixture of good and evil and it is only which part we cultivate the good or the evil within us all already. I vainly hope that in the future if humans make it through the 21st century that these negative aspects will lessen however, history makes plain we are still enthrall with the worst elements of our nature and do not as we should cultivate a more positive society.

      Sonia Greene was Jewish, but Lovecraft apparently told her regularly how she had somehow managed to "graduate" from her otherwise lowly and loathsome race. I only just read Leslie Klinger's annotated collection of Lovecraft's stories and it contains some info on that, and more concerning the forms his racism took. It was a long way from "moderate".

    Strike down the prodigious bullocks that so encumbered my lower regions since the early years of my life and forced innumerable trysts with all feminine connections that crossed my path. Such a hindrance the long physically exhausting sessions of love making that it would be better to smooth the area in its whole no matter any certain consequence.
