Consider that Verna as Death might be a little too on the nose; she's more like Fortune, which can not only mean a great deal of wealth but also luck (either good or bad), fate, and destiny. It hasn't been confirmed anywhere, it's just my opinion, but I think it's no coincidence that the company's name is Fortunato and that luck and chance are often personified in literature and music as a woman who is sometimes fickle.
The ep is based on Masque of the Red Death, the EAP story where Prince Prospero and his court of nobles hide away inside a fort to drink and party and keep themselves isolated from the common people who were dying from a plague called the Red Death. Suddenly a figure in a red blood stained cloak and a skull mask who no one knows shows up, and Prince Prospero goes to demand who tf they are. The figure turns to him ,and he cries out and drops dead to the ground, whereupon the guests swarm the gate crasher but the mask and cloak fall to reveal no body underneath. It was the Red Death itself, and everyone catches the disease and dies, because no fortress walls can keep out Death when it comes knocking.
Yes! One of my favourites of Poe's. Worth mentioning that in the mansion that Prince Prospero uses to party, there are different coloured rooms, and on episode 1 when Roderick is having flashes of all their death, they are all a different colour. Small detail but I enjoyed it.
Was the story set around the time of the Black Plague? Haven't read much Poe. Just wondering if the setting of his stories were mostly set around the time of his life and his 'present day', or if he went further back or even into the future.
@@ct6852 Its not really clear, though I've heard 14th century or there abouts. I think most stories were set relatively contemporary to his time tho with a couple of exceptions.
What I like about this series is, we can feel how gruesome the death can be. We almost anticipate it, pretty much called it, how Perry will die. But still the visuals hits like a bomb. Definitely, can't feel for the person getting it (for most of them). I think, Flanagan has already shown us how to care for his characters with his previous works. So here, what we actually see is detachment. This too is art, where we are emotionally distant from them yet is relatable enough. Classic Poe touch
I think Leo spoke up for Perry during the dining room scene too. When Madeleine was talking about "your debutante balls" and Leo is all, "Is that what you think I do?" he was taking the heat off Perry, because that's the sort of thing Perry does.
LMBO at the ASMR y'all did. I didn't notice the continuing ambient background during the end credits until ep 6 because Netflix switched to the next episodes. This is a pretty awesome series. Funny to see Oak get uncomfortable & parts like Quinn getting excited about the background & Answer saying "its just the carpet" LOL. Can't wait for your next ep reaction.
Given that Roderick said those chemicals were so corrosive they were eating the tanks and couldn't be transported, there's no way in hell the people Perrie got to hook the tanks up to the sprinklers didn't notice it wasn't water, and definitely would have sustained horrific injuries themselves from doing it. So one of two things happened: 1. those workers hated Perrie so much for it they said nothing knowingly it would kill them all. 2. Miss Ookum Spookum intervened so they wouldn't say anything, ensuring the only people who could prevent it did not.
I have to assume Miss Ookum Spookum was the reason. The fact that all the employees left the room so quickly after her telling them, instead of being confused like the brothers wife was, feels to me like they'd "knew" what was gunna happen and they "knew" Ookum Spookum was involved (I say "knew" cause idk if they actually know or if she just implanted stuff into their sub-concious). If it was the employees plan to kill Perrie they probably woulda set it all up and left without her having to tell them anything
A fantastic reaction as always! Love that you guys are doing this 💜 Sidenote- depending upon how familiar with E A Poe any of you are, each individual episode is based on a different one of his works (all woven in to the overall Usher story) so the titles give huge hints on how each of them will end

14:12 did you peep the Easter egg? Carla Gugino's Gerald’s Game pose? It’s interesting how the roles are reversed; this time Carla (Verna) basically has power overall and control over Bruce (Roderick) though through his son while in GG Carla (Jessie) had to go through inner conflict while not in control partly due to Bruce’s (Gerald) actions
I couldn't stop laughing at how much you laughed in discomfort in this one. I'm pretty sure I squirmed as much as y'all did for the amount of debauchery in this epi. It was the most uncomfortable for me to sit through, but the end was great. The rest of the episodes don't have quite as much deviance. 😂
To clarify for those that don’t know: a bottle episode is the “cheap” episode of a season. It is unusual to see a show as short as this one to have one because the reason for a bottle episode is to relocate budget from a smaller episode so it can be used to help pay for a more expensive one. You can tell when it’s a bottle episode from cost cutting signs, such as the lack of guest stars and extras, the sets being kept to a minimum few, the lack of special effects, and keeping the storyline simple. A good example of bottle episodes is the DND episode of Community or the Fly episode of Breaking Bad.
Perry's friend Jenny is Alexis, the daughter in "Castle," was bugging me so much where I knew the face from when I first watched it. Spent like 10 minutes on Google before I could continue watching xD And then I had to start over because I wasn't paying enough attention to what was going on😆
I really hope ya'll do more of this show! I just finished binge-watching it yesterday. So cool, and the way it's tied to Poe, especially in some of the tiny details later in the series, is just beautifully done. Looking forward to more reactions.
Holy hell. Watched the whole show in one day, and never picked up on sturge from midnight mass is playing Beverly keens husband in this show. No beard really changes a face 😂
There are a few nice MF-related easter eggs in this show. At the party in this episode, Prospero's female friend with the short shaved red hair was wearing a mask that was featured heavily in Flanagan's film _Hush_ from 2016 (it had quite a few familiar actors/actresses in it). Great reaction fellas, loved the whispering ASMR! 😂💜

I don't see these things are being part of any connected universe at all. I like to work with a lot of the same people, in front of the camera and behind, but the stories aren't building out any interconnected universe. There are easter eggs and references, sure, but "Flanaverse" is drastically overstating it (and the word itself is awkward and unintentionally funny). There isn't really a replacement I'd propose - I think each project should stand on its own. A lot of people misconstrue this she definitely was not offering him an out or a chance to do the right thing or avoid this fate. The deal was very clear that the House of usher would fall in its entirety. At best she gave him the ability to turn around and do the right thing and have a less gruesome death potentially but beyond that he was always slated to die. The confirmation of this is with Lenoir, and by all means did not deserve this thing she didn't make these selfish cruel and reckless decisions at the others made at the expense of other human lives and hearts she was good but she still had to die and her death was not anywhere near as bad as the rest of them. To Hindi heaven and not monstrous way wouldn't have made a difference.
Verna did not give him an out. He was always going to die because of the deal Roderick & Madeline made with Verna. I think people are being more accepting of subtitles with there being a lot more series being in a different language, mainly the Korean films that are popular. This is such a great series though, Mike Flannigan strikes gold again, although Edgar Allen Poe does take some credit 😂
I know this is unusual but seeing as u already reacted to the trilogy could you please do a reaction to the new hunger games movie? Its called songbirds and snakes the book is so amazing i almost wanted to immediately re read it when i finished it.

Maybe there's something I'm missing.
I stil can't move on from The Haunting of Hill House. for me The Fall of the House of Usher feel so blend. no more powerful dialogue and the creepyness... I give 6/10 for this
We ideally can't compare both.. given hill House was the story of one family's deterioration. However this one is one major plot with all the Edgar Allan Poe's work infused together. They both don't have the same vibe , i can agree on that But then again if you are fan of Poe's work, you would come to appreciate it more. For me, the second time watch was better than the first.
"Bottle episode" doesn't mean single-character-focus episode. It's more to do with reduced budges and limited filming locations. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottle_episode

However this one is one major plot with all the Edgar Allan Poe's work infused together.
They both don't have the same vibe , i can agree on that
But then again if you are fan of Poe's work, you would come to appreciate it more.
For me, the second time watch was better than the first.
I agree. @@goswamipratibha2010
"Bottle episode" doesn't mean single-character-focus episode. It's more to do with reduced budges and limited filming locations. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottle_episode
