@@GlitchSystem-xf7jb And some may end up in museums; many collectors loan, some eventually donate, or a museum itself could bid. But even if some pieces enter (or re-enter) a black hole for a time, it’s a double-edged sword; these sales are almost entirely responsible for prompting museums, studio archives, and - very gradually - the general public to finally see enduring value in original props and costumes. If it wasn't for collectors tracking things down and creating a visible market over the past few decades, much of what resides today in museums would have either been tossed or remained boxed up in warehouses/attics. On the whole, these auctions are far more stories of appearances than disappearances.
@GlitchSystem-xf7jb if it was not for private collectors keeping historic items out of harms way many artifacts would have been lost to time. I think of it like a time capsule.
I was lucky enough to be measured up at Wested Leather by Peter Botwright before his death for a Raiders Jacket - my second one from him. He was so kind and patient with my geek out - and when he learnt I was working in the industry he let me try on the Mad-eye Moody coat he had just got back from Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire. It was one of those epic days that I still remember regularly. I bought my dad a A1 jacket from the patterns used for Memphis Belle that day as well.
Interesting to think about the films being made at an equal amount of time from when they take place and now.. Films were made roughly 40 years ago and they were filmed roughly 40 years after ww2
Back in the late 80s I bought a jacket like this from the OLD "Banana Republic" (when they were still independent and made good products). Made from goatskin, rather than horse or cowhide. It was very supple and looked naturally aged. Much lighter weight than a pilot's jacket. It's a little worn, but I still have it.
Wested Leather is the company that made the jackets for Ford in the film's (they renamed themselves to Wested in like the mid 90s) and they were all goat and lamb skin. Phenomenal Leather.
Indeed, wish they had done that for all of their other prop videos before, but i hope they keep adding them from now on. It's great to just soak it in.
Love the jacket. I remember about 25 years ago I wanted to rent an Indiana Jones costume. The costume shop wanted 250 to rent, and it was a bomber jacket, not Indy’s. I had the hat from MGM Studios in Orlando. I ended up buying a jacket at Wilson’s leather for under $100. I was in my basement distressing it to look like it did on the VHS cover. I wore a tan shirt, wrinkled, brown pants and some work boots. At the Halloween part on the Intrepid in NYC I got a lot of compliments. I’ll never forget we saw Toby Keith perform at Boo Country Bash. Good times.
A couple of comments about the leather jacket. It's mentioned, with surprise, that the jacket is kind of light. This is actually period-correct. Jackets like this were windbreakers, not necessarily for warmth. This was the case of the Army Air Corps A-1 and A-2 jackets; the wearers would be clothed in wool uniforms and the jackets went over the outside. In contrast, the AAC's shearling jacket, the B-3, had very good insulation. The second point is about the leather itself. Most of the flying jackets in this period were goatskin or horsehide. Both are VERY durable leathers. However, for a prop jacket, you don't want that! You want something you can easily scuff up to make them artificially aged.
Yes, correct. I have three Cooper A2s and they are literally _summer weight_ jackets. Great windbreakers and great when layered, but certainly not for warmth on their own.
The vertical panels on the shirt are typical of guayaberas. Maybe this design was chosen because, growing up in the American Southwest (or at least his childhood scenes having been filmed there), it's reasonable his fashion choices might be influenced by a type of shirt popular in Mexico.
Met Adam a couple days ago at fan expo Vancouver and just gotta say it was a great honour and I had things to say but I was too starstruck so my brain couldn’t get the words out . Thank you Adam for making my childhood great and for inspiring me to be creative and make props of my own .
Adam is almost exactly a month older than me (July 15 and August 17 1967) and there’s something warming to my heart about thinking of almost 14 yo me and almost 14 yo Adam sitting in a theater seeing Raiders for the first time. Does that make sense? We were at the same stage of development leaving aside the differences between boys and girls adolescent development. I saw it with my dad and my best friend at the time. Also, my eagle-eye husband spotted Tom Servo down at the bottom of the glass case. He looked it up and they’re estimating it Tom Servo will sell for $10-20k.
I used to walk past Angels a lot on the way back from a particular court. I would pop in occasionally. I believe it was Angels that had the original Obi Wan Kenobi robe on hire as "Monk Costume". I bet they'd have sold it for a tenner; or 20 quids tops!
@@michaelhearn3831 Yeah. I gather a few people hired it before they remembered what it was. And they used to be open to bids on everything they had in there! I wonder if Adam could investigate the Wizard of Oz story and supposedly finding Baum's actual coat when they went prop hunting. Is that a myth dreamt up by the PR dept or did it actually happen?
I was at an Angels auction circa 1983/1984 in Camden Town when the original Declan Mullholland Jabba The Hutt costume from Star Wars went unsold. Wish I'd bought it, now!
I love how Brandon knows very well what Adam likes these days, and picks out what he'll love most. It's really sweet, everyone needs a Brandon in their life.
Back in the day my friend and I were lucky enough to visit the MST3K studios in Eden Prairie, MN. The visit was between 1994 and 1997. I found the photos not long ago. It was such a treat to visit where the bots were built and the shows were shot.
After the first film, the producers had no desire to work again with Peter Botwright/Wested Leather who made the jackets, but Noel Howard, at Bermans and Nathans, being a nice man, was able to obscure which supplier the jackets for the 2nd film came from (which was still Wested Leather!) Both men no longer with us, sadly. Noel Howard had some items from Temple of Doom stored at his flat (shirt, pants, jacket, boots) which were being held for Anthony Powell.
@ 6:00 Adam is pointing out the stripe that overlays the pocket. What no one is mentioning is the way this stripe is applied would make the pocket unusable.unless it was hand sewn.which this shirt appears to be.
Adam, this is perfect timing. Last week Adam graciously came up to Vancouver Canada for Fan Expo. Adam like always was wonderful to all the attendees. During the Q & A, I asked Adam why they (Myth-Busters team) blew up buster in Bye Bye Buster, to where I remarked on how Adam cos-played Indiana Jones on the show and quoted a line from last Crusade for which he said at the same time "It belongs in a Museum" Jinx (Neither he or me called it). He explained that it was required for the story. Sad for Buster but good enough explanation. And not a day after Fan-Expo he releases the video of Indiana Jones Jacket. Just luck of the draw timing. Hope you have a good trip in London and thank you very much for coming to Vancouver. PS. hope you enjoyed the 3D pictures of you on Season 3 of the Expanse.
I own a Raiders jacket made by the same clothier in England that made them for the first film. Bermans and Nathans made the Temple of Doom jackets, and they are just slightly different than the originals. They have smaller pockets and buckles instead of D rings on the side straps which face the opposite way than the original. My guess is this will garner $25k - $40k.

The Indy shirt is the result of the costume department doing their work. Take a look at details of a Janker jacket, popular during this time in Austria.
Growing up, I had a shirt with that kind of vertical panel crossing the shirt pockets. It was just a white shirt, no relation to the movie, but it did the same thing of breaking the bottom line of the pocket - and on mine it wasn't sewn correctly so the pocket basically had a hole down into that long panel. I think it was just a style in the early 80s. I wouldn't be too surprised if this was an off the shelf pick for the first film.
Indian Jones all amazing films I was lucky to be in Spain when last crusade was being filmed the scene where Indian is on the side of the tank we were way above watching at the side of a excursion coach

Considering how frugal the animation houses used to be, I wouldn't be surprised if you found the drawing was reused in more than one scene or episode. :p
I've wondered about having a different sized wardrobe for the doubles. It came fitted and tight like the actors wore has the same badge inside. sadly I can't zip it anymore heh. its thin and the buckles cling, its a great fall weather jacket, not for winter weather in the midwest US.
The beginning of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" when Indy is in the room with the golden idol. He warns Satipo about booby traps, so he takes a torch, presses the floor with it, and a dart shoots out.
For some reason I found it slightly disappointing to learn that the Indy jacket is light. I got obsessed with leather jackets because of Indy, love a good, heavy leather jacket, surprising and a little "huh, well" about it being lightweight
The only scene I ever had a problem with in raiders was when Indy swaps the idol for a bag of dirt, and is surprised when he still sets off the booby trap. Really Indy?
