What a treat to see inside of one of these and get to ride along for the repair process. I have one sitting on the 'round-to-it' shelf which came from a university (along with lots of other bits.) Nice to see what is probable in store for me when I get to it. I love the thought and skill that went into the design of the font panels of these old instruments. Today so many instruments (and other things) are hard to use due to an endless series of menus and questionable button layout.
I have had non-working one of these sitting on a shelf in my mothers garage for many years. I bought it at the WTRW swap meet for a few dollars. After seeing you open it it I will probably attempt to work on mine after I retire in another year.
This is a really interesting series, thank you for showing us your repair. It might be interesting to check the voltages to the amplifier while band one is selected to see if there is a correlation with the 700 MHz output and the lack of leveling function.
Being spent a couple of hours today debugging a circuit I really liked this vid. You made more progress in 10 minutes than me in hours (and I have a way simpler circuit, damn), but it was very enjoyable.
The manual states that the Band 1 amp/buffer should provide ~40dB of gain. Aside from the Amp/Buffer, the common components are the switching diodes (steering diodes) in the Band 2-3 module which select which signal to pass to the attenuator. It's possible that one of those diodes are leaky in one direction and works fine when forward biased. Otherwise, something in the Band 1 amp/buffer is going into self-oscillation which can be seen @ ~700Mhz... This is a great series...!!!
Someone already mentioned that you missed a cap in the 5 MHz marker box. What was the value of the bad caps again? Save me a trip back thru the playlist...going to order them up for my unit.
this thing doesnt need an oscillator at all, you just make some noise and then filter out the sweep from it, then no oscillator required. and thats a heaps easier circuit than all this crap.
It's time for me to say: Thank you -really all your videos are amazing, very interesting and in best sense educational. But: please don't get "cool" don't start advertising inside your videos - to many former good channels are destroyed by that bad manner - so i wish you and us users that your channel don't get to successful -big success destroyd so many technical channels with advertising (the TH-camr get greedy and quit their real job to make the "easy" money) please stay a amateur in the best sense - don't start to be a fulltime and "stylish" typical TH-camr, better take a break and do not freqent video than ever become one more typical TH-camr - your work and channel are to valuable and special to get destroyed in that way . . Thank you for yor phantastic work
Nothing is free. It certainly is expensive for TH-cam to host and stream millions of videos. People making videos also spend a lot of their time and money to produce them. Advertisements are a 'passive' way for you to support the content you like and to encourage more of it. You could also choose to support creators directly through membership, Patreon, etc.
@@HeyBirt Yes, I make 10 times more money with Google ads than Patreon. Both help. I made $4k last year total but spent $5k and that does include my time. I don't want to make a living as a TH-camr. I just want to give back to the community. I do hate in video ads and so choose to avoid them in my videos but many count on that revenue I just skip over the ads.

And I really like the “warts and all” style of your posts, as well as the variety, far broader than anything I’m likely to encounter, but very interesting general knowledge. You never know when a seemingly-obscure recollection suddenly makes sense.
If I rely on others I do not learn. It is important to fail. You learn more by failing than by being told what to do. If you just need a working generator then OK get someone to fix it. But if you want to learn electronics (and have fun) try it yourself.

why do we use crystal oscillators when you can make em any way you want.

All of them had a capacitor on the bottom; see 3:09.
I took apart a chinese power supply recently. Mistake, the inside was a rats nest. This Wavetek just puts it to shame.
