  • In a radical way this intervention sheds new light on the Dutch policy on cultural heritage. At the same, it makes people look at their surroundings in a new way. The New Dutch Waterline, a former defence line in the Netherlands, has potential for contemporary functions.
Bunker 599 is a pilot project to reveal the qualities of this military landscape and to make it publically accessible.

Love that. One of a forgotten 600 became one in a kind. This is true transformation, and I'm not at all sorry for the caterpillar that changed into the beautiful butterfly - it has become something more, something that can make our imagination fly, not crawl.
    Magnificent!

There are hundreds of survivng bunkers, this one is a national monument that received a Dutch Design Award. It may be distasteful to some, but then they can visit the hundreds of other ones and ignore this one. This however is accessible and brings people's attention to the invasion of the Nazis and then their defeat by the allies. I hope it keeps people from forgetting the sacrifices that were made to drive the Nazis out. My grandfather served in the Quartermaster Graves Registration Units. He had the grim duty of making 9 cemeteries for U.S. soldiers who died in France after the Operation Overlord (D-day as it is often mistakenly referred to) landings at Normandy that sent the allies clear through to Berlin 11 months later and to the Nazi surrender. So many people, military and civilian died at the hands of the Nazis. I am grateful for the liberation and sovereignty of the Netherlands.
