Description:
Hippeastrum papilio is a species hippeastrum. A bulb multiplies to form a large cluster of bulbs.
The semi evergreen strappy foliage is arching, long, glossy, and lush.The flowers are eye-catching and stunning and large and gorgeous. They appear on tall upright robust stems.
They are cream in colour displaying beautiful maroon strips that radiate from a green centre like the wings of a butterfly. The stamen and pistil resemble butterfly antennae. Hence the common name: butterfly amaryllis.
History/ country of origin:
As I mentioned previously, this is a species variety of Hippeastrum. That means it is a variety from the wild. It was discovered in the wild in the 1990s in southern Brazil n a tropical forest where it grows epiphytically in the tops of very tall trees. Around 50 plants survive in a small residual portion of a once great forest. Hippeastrum papilio is extremely rare in the wild but over the years, this beautiful plant has been cultivated and shared to ensure survival.

Terracotta pot, garden specimen, indoor plant, cut flower, epiphytic.
It can be used as a garden specimen, planted in the ground or displayed as an epiphyte in the fork of a tree. It can also be used as an indoor plant while in flower or as a cut flower. If grown in a pot, it’s best to use a terracotta pot. Use a coarse sandy potting mix with added orchid bark as a potting medium.
If grown in the garden, it’s best left undisturbed because it performs best when bulbs are crowded and also, ensure the bulb is planted proud of the garden soil or potting medium. Plant at least half the bulb above the soil surface. Hippeastrum won’t flower if the bulbs are buried too deeply.
Position:
Prefers a morning sun or dapple sun position. Avoid afternoon sun.
Climate:
Tropical to temperate/cool climates. Can withstand a mild frost to the foliage.
Flowering time:
Early spring
Soil:
Well drained. Constantly wet soil can cause bulbs to rot.
Potting medium - Coarse sandy mix. Orchid bark mix.
Pruning:
Not required. Likes to be crowded. Remove spent foliage.
Fertiliser
Occasional liquid fertilise if desired after flowering and while in leaf during its growing season.
Water:
Water when coming into leaf. Do not leave too wet during dormant periods.

Foliage and flower damage. - Slugs and snails
Not flowering - bulb planted too deeply. Bulb needs to be at least half exposed above soil surface.
Avoid root/bulb rot - Plant in a well drained or mound up soil. Water while in leaf but keep on the dry side when dormant.

...hi Trish, it's nice to see a hippeastrum doing well outside , all of the videos I've seen show them growing in pots, indoors , I have recently bought my first bulbs and decided to take a punt and plant mine outside, I'm in northern NZ, so now my only concern is that our climate might be a bit too wet, time will tell. Barry.
Glad you liked the video. Maybe mound the soil up to protect from getting overly wet. If you're in a frosty area it will need protection from frost as well. Good luck.
It's now autumn here in the Pacific Northwest, USA. I have had my potted bulbs outside for the summer. Some of my bulbs are in leaf while some have remained dormant for most of the summer. I'm not sure how to get everyone on the same cycle. Suggestions. I've had this plant for years. It multiplies but has rarely bloomed.
The most common reason Hippeastrum bulbs don't flower is because they are buried. About half of the bulb should be above soil level. They also take a few years to flower. They also need a bit of sun. Otherwise I'm not sure why yours is not flowering. Good luck. Hope it flowers next season.

What a *GORGEOUS* specimen!! My 1 Butterfly Amaryllis is struggling :( Hoping it perks up this Summer while it spends time outdoors. Well, Fast Forward 2 years... I killed my 3rd papilio Will try 1 more time to grow this picky Beauty. 🤞

@@trishrestante3865 I've let it acclimate a week (keeping it on the dry side) in it's original 1 gallon plastic nursery pot. Soil mix looks like a common CHEAP bagged potting soil. Bulb buried too deep too. Will repot into a Clay pot with a lot of Orchid bark for drainage/aeration. Hope this wasn't just yanked out of a field/bed & stuffed into a pot for sale.

Yes. I have read that. Thanks for that. When I propagated from this which I think, was originally seed from Brazil. The person who sourced it died before I started working at Camden Park. It produces true to type offspring. No visible variation. I have other species Hippeastrum here that don't produce seed.

I have amaryllis planted in my garden in tropical North Queelsnad with massive high foliage... Should I remove the leaves at any point?
