Great question and something I should have mentioned so I will pin the comment so people can see the answer haha. Generally, most characters have MORE anti air invul, the weaker the DP you do is. So for most characters (I think all characters, but could be wrong), technically using a Light DP will give you the best chance to cleanly go through the air fireball. That being said, when Akuma does the air fireball, his jump angle's tend to be very shallow if he does it early, so depending where he's jumping from, your light DPs may end up whiffing. If you are confident it will reach, light DPs are best. I think using medium DPs will give you the best of both worlds, a little more invul and a little more range, but if you are confident with your timing, the heavy DPs are the least likely to miss.
I tried to DP the level 8 CPU on the jumping fireball and he countered it with a DP of his own, then went into standing heavy kick, medium kick, DR heavy kick, medium, then OD flame fist to get the wall splat into level one and took 55% of my health lol. Maybe I was too late on it but man it stung
This is exactly what I wanted to see. I figured out the trick with his HK and his air fireballs, but I wanted to see what kinda stuff I could punish with. Good stuff! New sub from me!
Now I don’t even feel like playing against him I just get irritated if I see him on my screen yesterday I played 7 to 8 games in line with different player with akuma main
think of it this way: if you learn the matchup, you can rack up wins and rank up faster. I'm somewhat decent against Akuma, so I get free wins by countering his fake setups
I was already doing relatively well in the matchup so far but wow this video increases my knowledge & confidence tenfold. Thank you so much, I should really try to lab specific characters more to learn lmao.
It sucks that I stopped playing SF6 after fighting a shit ton of Kens in ranked over and over again. So I thought I could finally jump back on since every character got nice changes and the whole roster could be useable and fun. WELL NEVER FUCKING MIND lmao. 50 matches against Akuma, and 4 other characters 1 or 2 matches each. So boring.
@philvaneman5769 give it a week or 2. End of the day this was always going to happen, you can't bring Street Fighters coolest character onto the roster and expect majority of people to not try him out
So true. Even if it's normal was the same with Rachid and aki, ed and then Évery time new characters release. But in sf 6 this more annoying because it feel like ken> new character > Ken > new character >Ken. Hope with the new season it will change even if I bet it will be Ryu all the time now...
As Zangief I have no idea how to deal with Akuma, Ive played 4 matches against him and have lost all 4 of them. His offensive pressure is too much to keep up! If anyone has any tips, please help me!
Lariat (especially OD) is really good at dealing with all the aerial stuff mentioned in this video. Akuma is historically very good at not trying to interact with Gief because he moves so fast and has good fireballs, so it's definitely a match that will test your patience and make you slowly just try to walk him down. That being said a single mistake from Akuma should cost him half his health in this matchup. Don't be scared to use Gief large health pool as a resource. You may run into a fireball here or there but once you get anywhere close, you have to try to see what panic options they go for and really take advantage of him
@@MikeyDLuffy Thanks a lot! I tried your crouch blocking in neutral tips ended up getting many free grabs as a result of it. As you said, I've been using lariat to discourage Akuma from spamming his demon flips. It is still an uphill battle but at at least it is not as steep anymore!
As chun li, you can react to air fireball withex or medium hazanshu pretty consistently with punish counter into a combo (the medium one I think combos into cr. lp into light sbk I think). Heavy hazanshu if you read it early enough gets a fat punish combo as well
I always plan to. I did it with Rashid when he came out! But I wasn't playing much when Ed and Aki dropped so I didn't know enough to make a video on it haha
I play Guile, I don't find this match up to be too bad, though it does test my defense if Akuma gets in. Flash Kick covers most of his air options and I can at least keep up with his fireballs using H sonic blade into boom and can win the fireball war with resources (level 2 or level 1). I find Akuma's st. HP spacing trap is often a good place to throw out Guile's UDK, the space is safe enough for me if it gets blocked and I've often caught Akuma whiffing a cr. MK. Thanks for the heads up on the red flash on the teleport though, I often mistook that for charging a fireball.
The one thing you forgot to mention is when I go against Akumas and after you keep DP and Anti Air them, they will just start spamming fireballs and mix it up with a DP or Drive Rush.
Yea, but every shoto in the game can do this lol. Dealing with this stuff is just learning the game as a whole. Was outlining the cheese that Akuma specifically is trying to get away with
The thing that I am struggling to learn about Akuma is how his combos are so brainless he can combo out of the slowest moves ever. He is just so ponderously slow yet un-counterable on block in a lot of it. Like after blocking a heavy attack, he can counter your quick punch with another heavy attack despite the fact it's coming out so slow it can be pronounced legally dead from nobody knowing where it's been for 2 years. So many slow moves that lock you into the longest blocks that break the flow of any match. Command throws also seem to not function correctly again him. Passing right through him when any other character would get grabbed in the exact same situation and mix up. He can also Normal Grab you out of a command throw - and not in the "oops! I started to late" way it happens in other matches - he can just free and easy counter command throws well after the fact by just throwing or ex uppercut. I swear they messed something up in his code that offsets how other characters can interact with him. Wouldn't surprise with other mistakes they make, like Terry's jumping hard confirm to EX shoulder into super 2 being stronger than any combo involving his super 3 - taking 60% off Ryu. That couldn't have been on purpose.
From what I recall, you can gladius through his jump air fireballs, phalanx over his ground fireballs, get a big punish with s.HP if you crouch his double kick, you just have to be patient and bully your way in, absolutely delete him if you touch him
how do i beat akuma with modern Luke? akuma out frames even my fastest attack which is crouching light jab and i have no other fast hitting options against him that beat his frame advantage. akuma can throw out that double standing punch move or that double kick move and i cant do anything, not even block
Hey great vid! Can ask you to explain your options when Akuma is spamming that cross-up string over and over. Idk what buttons he's pressing because I don't own him, but I think its like jump-in MK, into standing jabs, into low kicks, repeat. It tilts me so quick and sometimes they mix it up with a tick throw and I just lose it.
That's the literal opposite of what the video you supposedly just watched said. You can walk under, you can do a good normal, you can super. You can DI!
@@Shakenbake-in9ux I should have been more specific in the video, but you don't have to read it out of the blue. You still are reacting to him jumping and then once he leaves the ground you can make a choice. You can see him jump, react to it and press drive impact, and you will win cleanly if he air fireball'd. The "read" is if he will change his jump arc or not, but that's kind of the point of moves like this or divekicks etc. You can anti air him with normals consistently when he does air fireball if he's close enough, but if he doesn't do the air fireball, your anti air would have to be timed differently.
@@shadowsdie2wice no idea for airfireballs because it depends a lot on your char. But for command grab, during the phasing you can just quick punch him in the face. He do takes damage tho
Akuma has just come out and he is totally different from his past version. NO one is good with him right now, they just going with suboptimal strats. It like when sf6 came out and kens were using corner swap as a damage extender in the middle of the stage instead just corner carrying the ops.
So far Akuma is a pretty average character. What sets him apart from his shoto peers are that he is plus frames on most of his moves and he has a very big tool kit. Other than that he doesn't have the good hitboxes like Luke or Ken, he doesn't have a corner carry like Ken and he doesn't exactly have the same damage output as ryu. In this scenario, I think I'd rather call Akuma a jack of all trades, master of none. Rather than just saying that he is straight up better than all the other shotos
Might be helpful to list his most whiff punishable common normals. His double Hk is the only thing I consistently punish and some players don’t really use the button much in neutral
