Some of these were creepy and cruel. Others just felt out of place for their setting or just were boring. It was always interesting how some games used the countdown to really encourage just one more quarter.
The Ninja Gaiden game over screen might be the most vicious, but the Cadillacs & Dinosaurs one is pretty rough as well. Being shot point blank multiple times by some huge shirtless guy with a new wave hairstyle and a glam rock coat would be a humiliating way to go.
Running out of ammo in Operation Wolf always had me. Instead of going out in a blaze of glory, you just become one more hostage. Excellent trolling on the game makers' part, haha.
This got me to thinking on these Game Over screens, in Ninja Gaiden, the words were (neatly) arranged in entrails. Sly Spy is also an underrated Game Over in it's simplicity in showing the consequences of your failure. Capcom's screens ranged anywhere from coercive (Final Fight) to pleading, as in a doctor or healer can't revive you without paying up. The mahjong screen looked like a toned-down Ninja Gaiden for the "step on me, Mommy" set. Comparing Mortal Kombat's screen, which is iconic for the series, if the Ninja Gaiden fate was used in Splatterhouse, would it have made that game more impactful? And on a lighter note, y'all think Tecmo's Team Ninja helped "revolutionize" game physics with the Dead or Alive franchise to atone for their nightmare fuel imagery? Overall, we also have memories of beating the end boss and seeing some good endings to counteract the defeats; perseverance, reflexes, and patience are all qualities in gaming that can be leveraged in the real world. And it's still possible to be a reasonably sane human being after reveling in fictional violence.
I think the "cruelty" in it is the overly joyful song seeming like it's celebrating your defeat as a form of mockery. (Though it's the same song even if you win, so it kinda mitigates that feel when you realize that.)
Looking at it from another perspective, the Fatal Fury Game Over, can you imagine if the creators had put the phrase when you defeat Geese? something like: "Andy Bogard dies in hospital 3 hours after falling from a highrise" that would have made it too cruel for the player.
