    Thank you man. I've searched for the proper way to do this and yours is the only one I've found. Most others just have a blurred layer with a feathered mask, which doesn't graduate the blur, as it should.

      Hey to achieve that I think your best bet would be to drop the frame rate of the comp to something like 12fps and then randomise the scale of the clip a little using the Wiggle tool, so it looks like the camera isn't just sliding smoothly along.

    Great tutorial, however I have one question with the workflow. Is there anyway to still see the base video when in the pre-comp so you can shape the mask more accurately? I feel like I have to guess where to put the mask and then go back to the base comp to see its placement, and if it's wrong.. go back to the pre-comp again and blindly make an adjustment until it's right.

    do you have an idea why there is no lumetri color effect in my after effects CC 2015?

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm no that's odd. Are you on a licensed version or is it a pirate copy? I've seen lots of cases of things missing in pirate copies. If it's a legit version, you could try reinstalling it. Also check in After Effects and see if it's in the Effects menu there.

    • @bepowerification
      @bepowerification 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      its legit (but trial). I will try a reinstall.

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @bepowerification
      @bepowerification 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey. I think my install was corrupt, I found other effects missing as well. I kind of interrupted and resumed the install the first time, maybe its because of that. A clean reinstall fixed the problem. Just in case someone runs into it. Thank you for your replies :)

    What is the reason for choosing those adjustments numbers exactly 25,15,40,95? Is there some math behind it?

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. It's more about visual aesthetic. And also I'm fond of multiples of 5 😅

  • @mikaelbjornson2666
    @mikaelbjornson2666 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why not just make a subtraction mask on the adjustment layer itself? Why bother with the blur map?

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because that won't give you a gradual blur, that'll give you a weird transition section of blurry and non blurry footage. The effect needs the black and white data to gradient the effect properly.

    God, I love TH-cam.

  • @FernandoVarella
    @FernandoVarella 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    what about the speed ( time lapse)?

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the speed you just increase the speed to the desired amount? Bearing in mind you're better off shooting an actual timelapse with stills rather than just speeding up video. You'll get a much better file to work with and it'll look much better if you're able to add some slower shutter speed so there's motion blur in moving things.

    • @FernandoVarella
      @FernandoVarella 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will do with my dji drone. Should I use 24 or 60fps?

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're doing a timelapse with video then you definitely don't want 60p. That would be useful for slowmotion which is the opposite of a timelapse :-) Also shooting in 24p will let you go with a higher resolution which is nice for timelapse because you can zoom or pan the shot slightly if you're making the final video 1080p.

    Fantastic tutorial. I have done the effect on a timelapse of hot air balloons. The clip is 4k and 15ish seconds long. Media Encoder is telling me ~10 hours to render with a GTX 1070... WTF?

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooph, yeah that sounds oddly long. What are your other system specs? And are you exporting this as a 24, 25, 30fps clip? And at what compression?

    Nice tutorial!!
    But..why not just add it to the adjustment and have a mask, instead of the blur map🤔

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's where the magic of the camera lens blur effect comes into to play. Using the blur map you can gradually blur from sharp to blown. Having it on an adjustment layer and masking would just gradually change the opacity of the blurred layer, so it would look crap in the transition area as it overlapped sharp and blurred images. Best way to tell the different is to try it and see.

    • @ARTDAY
      @ARTDAY 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dodmedia like I know what you mean, but maybe just show the difference between the two, in a tutorial, like my first thought was..."why not just use a mask on it" 😆
      Maybe there's people like me hahaha
      I will try this out Tomorrow though I will go out and shoot
      😉

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The assumption was that you'd tried the old Gaussian blur mask trick and seen that it looked crap so you came looking for a realistic way to simulate it.
      Btw if I'd shown what the Gaussian blur trick looks like I'd have comments complaining about not getting to the point. 🤷‍♂️ damned if you do, damned if you don't 😂

    • @ARTDAY
      @ARTDAY 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dodmedia hahaha noo I didn't think of the gaussian blur
      I wan thinking about the camera lens blur on the adjustment layer with a mask feather
