When I bought my Barber Dime Album, (Dansco) I told the Coin Dealer.."If this has a slot for the 1894 S Dime I will not buy it. It INTELLIGENTLY does NOT. Who wants to have an album, that will NEVER be Complete. (it has been filled). David Lawrence Coin, sells Quality Coins. I am fortunate to own a few.

It's 80% true; 20% urban myth. There is a recorded story of Hallie Daggett telling coin dealer Earl Parker that she spent one or two of the dimes on ice cream soon after she received them from her father (he was the San Francisco Mint Superintendant in 1894). We know of two very low grade, well worn coins survived and one is referred to as the "Ice Crem Specimen".

We have only Daggett's word that he had 24 dimes struck. I've not seen a census. If there are two from Hallie Daggett and two low grade dimes, including the one spent for ice cream and one supposedly bought at Gimbels for $2.40, that makes four; I know of 5 other sales. That brings the total to 9, assuming that the sales I know of are not included in the 4 I knew or are not themselves duplicates. Where are the remaining 13? Is 24 accurate? The $2.40 price suspiciously echos the 24 count. Assuming that these dimes were made to even out bookkeeping at the mint-which seems an odd way to fix what could be finessed or otherwise repaired-and given as mementos to "important bankers," do we know who these important bankers were?
