Something fun to know about the River Spirit with the trash thorn. Apparently Miyazaki the film's director loves to volunteer in his home town to pick up trash and clean the local river. When he first started doing it they fished out dumped playground equipment and even bicycles from it. So a fun tidbit about his life inserted into the film.
There is one thing I always find amusing. You tell the story of 'Little Red Riding Hood' and no one asks "How do grandmother and Red Survive so long in the Wolf's stomach?" or "Why put stones into the Wolf's stomach and sew him back up if he is already laying there sleeping with his belly cut open. Just kill him." or "How did the Big Bad Wolf survive having his belly cut open in the first place?" But people watch 'Spirited Away' or 'My neighbour Totoro' and people want an explanation for everything.
Yes! I couldn't agree more! I really think it has to do with the familiarity with the story. Here in Europe we hear the Little Red Riding Hood story since we were little kids 😋

Just some clarification for you...most anime is not "sexy" per-se. There are many different anime genres and some may include "fan service" (sexy characters and situations, but not actual sex). This may just be one episode in an otherwise tame anime. It is called "fan service" for a reason - it is just there as a nod to the horny teens. A boy accidentally falling on top of a cute girl resulting in an accidental kiss, a hand where it shouldn't be or a face somewhere naughty is a pretty common trope. It may amount to wish-fulfillment for some viewers - but in a pretty innocent way. There is also "hentai" (roughly translated as "perverted") anime that rarely end up on mainstream streaming sites. The scene where Chihiro/Sen helps getting the "thorn" out from the River Spirit, is based on one time director Hayao Miyazaki helped out cleaning a polluted river and among the garbage he got out was a bike, hence the "thorn" was a bike.
The kind of anime you're referring to is a lot of Shounen stuff that uses tropes that a lot of people dont vibe with like harem's and such. The overly sexual anime is called hentai I believe. My favourite Ghibli film is My Neighbour Totoro. A much better story than Spirited Away... very moving.
There is a wide variety of anime… How sexual they might be is typically based on target audience and format etc… Obviously stuff aimed at teen boys is going to be more sexual in regards to females… Stuff made for TV will likely be tamer than direct home releases etc… Some are made for more adult audiences… Some are made for kids… Anime is just another way to make movies/shows… They probably are aimed more at a younger audience in general, but there is probably a wider demographic in Japan than western animated films/shows… Same with Manga… Here are a few recommendations (sorry if this gets kinda long, feel free to skim for the titles): I’d recommend pretty much every Ghibli film to watch, but be careful about copyright if you react to them. Perfect Blue is a cool psychological thriller, although I will warn that there is some strong sexual aspects in parts, although it’s not the focus of the film… Millennium Actress is a really cool film too… It’s about some people interviewing an old actress, but then from that it mixes with her past and the movies she was in… Everything blending together in a really interesting way. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (may be jumped or fell through time, I forget… Something like that) is a really fun anime movie too, I think… You can get a vague idea about it from the title lol. The Castle of Cagliostro (a Lupin III movie) is a really fun caper movie, starring the master thief, Lupin III… There are many fun movies and series about him, but this is one of the better ones… I think it was worked on by the director of this film too, shortly before starting studio Ghibli… Macross Plus is a great watch too, I think… I think it has a short series version and a movie version… I think both are roughly the same in content… I think it’s just either 4 or so episodes or you can watch a version where it’s all cut together… Kinda sci fi Top Gun vibes, but also involves a crazy AI pop star and an amazing soundtrack. It’s not essential, but knowing the story of the original Macross series adds a bit of extra context (the English release being named Robotech: The Macross Saga… Or something like that… The English release is weird because the people who bought the rights wanted more episodes, so they edited two other different anime onto the end >_
Thank you so much for the recommendations 🤗 I had no idea there was an anime adaptation of the Lupin character! 😯 We know him from the French Netflix Lupin series 👌🏻
I do think English version is kind of misleading people in some scenes, and doesn’t match what the characters said and even meaning. In which Haku trying to make a deal with yubaba, yubaba is actually saying something like “then what about you, even if I tear you apart?” So some dark theory believed that why haku said that don’t turn the head back is as soon as chihiro is back to her world, he’s gonna be teared apart according to the deal, that’s why that scene is cut off after yubaba said “even if I tear you apart”
The gift that The River Spirit gave Chihiro/Sen is a traditional japanese medicine that works a purgative hence why Dragon Haku and No-Face threw up when she gave it to them.
Fun one, D&L! Many of the Studio Ghibli stories are simply charming. But they also often have a sense of danger to them in a fairy tale sort of way. We even don’t have hentai as a category in Japan. It’s just a word for creep. And it was u guys changing a word “hentai” into a sexual category (I mean porn) and culture. Bc of that I sometimes get bothered by creep as well. Like “oh u came from Japan so I bet u like hentai stuff hahaha” Like that. it’s so rude and I also didn’t like when I noticed that u guys had that kind of images on anime bc it made me remember that memories but yeah other than that it was a great reaction video
Thanks a lot ☺️ Remember 2 things: we are not very knowledgeable about anime (we are just starting now) and we were not talking about hentai. We were talking about the idea of sexualized cartoons, but not animated porn itself. So far, we have seen very good anime movies (The Wind Rises and Spirited Away) that is not sexualized at all 👌🏻
A Silent Voice is a good, powerful anime film for newbies, as it doesn't have all the weird offputting "elements" anime is well known for. Shoya Ishida, a boy who bullied Shoko Nishimiya, a deaf girl in elementary school is ostracized and develops immense guilt, shame and self hatred from the incident. As a teenager in high school who suffers from social anxiety and depression, he decides to take a path of redemption to atone for his sins by reaching out to Shoko.
Miyazaki has the same storytelling as Don Bluth. "You can scare a kid and show dark themes to them as long as there is a happy ending." Anime/animation is an artistic medium, NOT a genre.
anime definitely has more "fanservice" than other animated media because both the fact that asian culture are more liberal with nudity and perversion than western countries, but the way they use those scenes are either for comedic effect and so on, it is definitely a difference of cultural perspective. But beyond the nudity and perviness, the story of the show is emotional, deep, and spellbinding. The best way I can describe it is.... if you LOOK PAST or even ADAPT to liking the fanservice so that it don't bother you, then the deeper things about anime will also be revealed.
This might interest. Spirited Away is very well known for being the very first anime in history to win an academy award. This would happen again years later with the film the boy and the heron.
To explain the Stink Spirit sludge thingy..... Ghibli Movies by Hayao Miyazaki usually have Environmentalism theme..... and the water spirit was corrupted and turn into a stink spirit because human pollution dirty the water and made him into an awful and smelly being that no one likes. Chihiro basically is the only one who noticed the problem and managed to get everyone to cooperate to "CLEAN" the pollution from the River spirit, and thus purifying it. The whole scene was to say "If people cooperate and work together, they will be able to help nature restore itself, and gain benefits from it"
what you feared was anime is called Hentai; some anime has inclusions of risqué bits and bobs they collectively call "fan service", and you have to be able to tolerate that to enjoy the anime (I will, if I have to, and especially if the story warrants it); but that's by no means all, or even most, anime; it's very diverse and full of different genres and tastes; you can't ever go wrong with Studio Ghibli, that's where I started! my favourite show, Demon Slayer, has virtually no fan service; for another anime movie, try Your Name
Vocês, definitivamente, deveriam assistir a Princess Mononoke. Mas esse não deveria ser o primeiro filme do estudio Ghibli de vocês. Assistam a Porco Rosso, Ponyo, Totoro e Kiki Delivery Service antes.
Stay away from Studio Ghibli they have a third party copyright enforcer that has shut down a few reaction channels in the past. The Vkunia channel was shut down like 3 years ago. They let her do about 20 Ghibli movies then hit her with a flood of copright strikes with no chance for appeal. She had to start from scratch so be careful.
It might be ok now, but it might be worth playing it safe too, just in case… Maybe do some research into it… Until then maybe don’t post more than two Ghibli reactions at a time.
In this case, it wasn't specificaly actual animated porn we were talking about (although maybe she were thinking about hentai a little bit). It was just really about hiper sexualized regular cartoons. Again, we are not very knowledgeable about this, so we might be way off... 😅😅
I recommend you watch other Ghibli animes like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Ponyo (or Ponyo on the Cliff at the Sea, it's my favorite Ghibli movie), Whisper of the Heart, Howl's Moving Castle and Pom Poko (which is a bit bizarre but it has a message). There's also The Grave of The Fireflies but I'd recommend against watching it unless you want to feel sad and depressed cuz it's not a happy movie (the sharp contrasts to Totoro and Ponyo which are happy feel good movies), it's downright tradgic. I have only seen that movie once and I can' bear myself of watching it again because it's soooo freaking sad (and I'm not a fan of sad movies).
Grave of the Fireflies to this day might be the movie that made me cry the most 😥 its a fantastic film, but yes, very depressing. We will shortly see Kiki's delivery service! Although most of our future Ghibli Studios movies reaction will be Patreon exclusive because we were warned that some channels got Taken down because they made reactions of their films 😬
Studio Ghibli makes some AMAZINGLY beautiful anime and they all tend to be kid-friendly. However, I would highly recommend you watch something like A Silent Voice or Your Name to feel the real power behind anime. Or if you want to stay in the Ghibli universe, try Howl's Moving Castle, which I think is less kid-oriented. I will say that if you decide to go the anime direction (especially if you go down the slice-of-life/romance route), I'm going to stick with you and give you a view and a like.
While western animation has tended to be targeted towards children, anime isn't pigeonholed in the same way. It has the same range as western live action movies, which cover everything from "made for kids" to "absolutely not appropriate for kids". There just isn't the same concept that "cartoons are just for children". And under the influence of anime, that's a perspective western animation has started to embrace as well. But perhaps because it's more of an aberration from what we're historically used to, the more adult-oriented anime may tend to stand out more and so define the style in many people's minds.
Some things are just meant to be a fun mystery. There is no need to always know everything. It is not an intelligence test. Just enjoy it for what it is.
@@williamapalla6831 My sister is a huge fan of Howl's Moving Castle! I honestly have no idea, depends one how well this video goes I guess xD For Patreon it's slightly different of course. And also a lot of people warned me that Studio Ghibli reactions can be very dangerous on youtoube... 😬

Japanese is an interesting language because the written language has a significant part that was adopted from Chinese, 'kanji' (lit. "Han characters"). Kanji commonly form the roots or stems of japanese words, representing their meaning, but are also used for writing personal names. Most kanji have multiple pronunciations, or readings, often a Chinese one and native/original Japanese one, sometimes multiple variations of these, including special pronunciations that are only used in personal names. So, her name 千尋 is pronounced 'Chihiro', which literally means something like "a thousand armspans", but the first character of her name 千 by itself is just a word, 'thousand', and hence is pronounced by itself as 'Sen', rather than something like just 'chi-', because that's how the number and word for 1000 is pronounced in Japanese (which derives from its pronunciation in Chinese, hence “sen” is its On reading).. When Yubaba steals Chihiro's name, she leaves just the 'Sen' part, 千, as her nickname, and this is part of her magic to attempt to induce Chihiro into forgetting her (almost) previous life, and identity. Hence, the full native title of the movie, 千と千尋の神隠し, 'Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi", lit. 'The Spiriting Away of Sen and Chihiro'. It almost suggests a littler girl's kidnapping, and being so sudden it's like she vanished by magic, and forced to work in order to live, but also like it's two different people, Chihiro and this Sen, like she has to choose which person she's going to be.
Btw, the first anime *I* ever saw was in college at an anime club, and was about hot chicks fighting giant monsters and spending most of the movie scantily-clad, and even getting naked at a couple points. And it was AMAZING and still one of my personal favorites! Anime definitely *includes* a lot of adult-oriented.. genres and sensibilities, and this cultural difference from US and much western animation was very liberating, because Japanese culture certainly has many things considered taboo in it, but also a greater willingness to explore a lot of those quite casually, in both anime and manga. It really highlighted how tame American animation tended to be in general. This doesn't mean anime lacks rather wholesome subjects, stories, and themes, as you can see here with Miyazaki's work.
As I understand it, a lot of the characters and spirits are heavily inspired by things like Japanese supernatural myths, Shintoism. No-Face is one of the more abstract ones, and in most analyses of the film, what he represents seems to be the most subject to interpretation. My own interpretation is that No-Face reflect and amplify however he's treated, towards whoever is treating him that way. - Sen treats him with kindness and generosity, so he tries to do the same by giving her the bath tokens - Frog and the other workers treat him with thinly-veiled greed, and he does the same eventually devouring them - in the end, Zeniba treats him with kindness as well, praise, and offers him a place and a role with simple work and he seems to have found the best, healthiest place for himself That he has no *face*, and wears a mask, all seem important, like he has no expression of his own, yet still appearing as if he was just "other people", like a personification of karma-how you treat others eventually comes back to you, and really seems like Miyazaki making social commentary of some kind.. Sen/Chihiro seems to be the first to realize this, whether subconsciously or intuitively. She says, "I think the bathhouse is making him sick", hence the most helpful thing to all is getting him out of there. There's a lot of clearly symbolic imagery in the film, which there often is with Miyazaki.
Of course I had to go check out some of the background of the characters in here, its just so interesting. And yeah, no-face seems to be one of those that everyone has a slighlty different explanation, which I love. Thank you so much for all the information you gave us ☺️ especially on the spelling of her name and the meaning of the title
@@gluuuuueand to add to your last point. He doesn't get a voice until he eats someone, and almost seems to take on their personality traits and such in a way.
Only a small percentage is "hentai" i hope. The rest of anime is just wholesome fun or a lot of fighting and stuff. Especially studio gibli is great for some wholesome stories.
Decided to look into this after watching your reaction to Star Wars Episode IV. I've scoured through the comments and have not seen any recommendation to one of the first and best among the animated films by Ghibli Studios. You should check out Laputa - Castle in the Sky, which won several awards in 1986 and was voted best animation of all time in 1988 and rated as one of the greatest adventure films ever made as well as "quite possibly the most entertaining anime that Miyazaki ever made". If you do decide to watch or react to it, look for the original Japanese version with English sub-titles. The English dub messed it up. I'm sure you will love the music, story, brilliant animation etc.
The x rated stuff is not simply referred to as regular anime. The x rated stuff is called Hentai. There are many different genres of anime. Regular anime may have minor nudity, but they draw the line at it becoming x rated. So don't be afraid to watch anime. It is not all the same.

Thanks a lot ☺️
Remember 2 things: we are not very knowledgeable about anime (we are just starting now) and we were not talking about hentai.
Sounds like a very compelling drama. I think I've heard that title referenced before 🤔
Miyazaki has the same storytelling as Don Bluth. "You can scare a kid and show dark themes to them as long as there is a happy ending."
Anime/animation is an artistic medium, NOT a genre.
Agree 100% and I love how Ghibli movies don't dumb down stuff for kids
No, Mouse Bo wanted to walk rather than riding on Chihiro's shoulder. It had nothing to do with her not wanting to play with him earlier.
I think your idea of anime is that it's all hentai. Which is what has the sexual content. Anime has all sorts of genre.
Yes, we clearly get now that it is just and art form, not a genre 😅
But we were not just talking about hentai, more about over sexualized anime series
anime definitely has more "fanservice" than other animated media because both the fact that asian culture are more liberal with nudity and perversion than western countries, but the way they use those scenes are either for comedic effect and so on, it is definitely a difference of cultural perspective.
But beyond the nudity and perviness, the story of the show is emotional, deep, and spellbinding. The best way I can describe it is.... if you LOOK PAST or even ADAPT to liking the fanservice so that it don't bother you, then the deeper things about anime will also be revealed.
Lucie is very dressed for a very posh occasion. Probably not one that involves sitting down in front of the television.
She just loves to over dress 😂😂 She doesn't need a special occasion ahahah
This might interest. Spirited Away is very well known for being the very first anime in history to win an academy award. This would happen again years later with the film the boy and the heron.
Did not knew that! Still have not seen that one
Akira or Ghost in the Shell would be her style.
Would love to check those out yeah
To explain the Stink Spirit sludge thingy.....
Ghibli Movies by Hayao Miyazaki usually have Environmentalism theme..... and the water spirit was corrupted and turn into a stink spirit because human pollution dirty the water and made him into an awful and smelly being that no one likes.
Chihiro basically is the only one who noticed the problem and managed to get everyone to cooperate to "CLEAN" the pollution from the River spirit, and thus purifying it.
The whole scene was to say "If people cooperate and work together, they will be able to help nature restore itself, and gain benefits from it"
That scene (and the while movie tbh) is even better when you understand a bit more of the context and the themes. Just a fantastic film 👌🏻
what you feared was anime is called Hentai; some anime has inclusions of risqué bits and bobs they collectively call "fan service", and you have to be able to tolerate that to enjoy the anime (I will, if I have to, and especially if the story warrants it); but that's by no means all, or even most, anime; it's very diverse and full of different genres and tastes; you can't ever go wrong with Studio Ghibli, that's where I started! my favourite show, Demon Slayer, has virtually no fan service; for another anime movie, try Your Name
oh I forgot to say, Spirited Away is my favourite Studio Ghibli movie
Your name has been very highly suggested
That's dumb, reaction videos draw additional traffic to the thing being reacted to
The current US © holder GKIDS doesn't care, they see their Ghibli collection as a boutique product.
They are just carrying over the former © holder Disney's "Vault" marketing where an artificial scarcity is created to drive sales. Until recently Studio Ghibli forbade their licensees from conducting digital distribution.
I like vkunia videos tbh, but was not aware of that 😱 ok, need to be carefull in the future
Exactly, its like free publicity for the movies 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
It might be ok now, but it might be worth playing it safe too, just in case… Maybe do some research into it… Until then maybe don’t post more than two Ghibli reactions at a time.
the sexy anime you're thinking of is probably the stuff categorised as ecchi (or just straight up hentai) so you can avoid that stuff.
It happens a lot on media that is off those categories, too.
@@sergi5816 true. I have a tolerance to it
In this case, it wasn't specificaly actual animated porn we were talking about (although maybe she were thinking about hentai a little bit).
Lucy ❤😊
Studio Ghibli makes some AMAZINGLY beautiful anime and they all tend to be kid-friendly. However, I would highly recommend you watch something like A Silent Voice or Your Name to feel the real power behind anime. Or if you want to stay in the Ghibli universe, try Howl's Moving Castle, which I think is less kid-oriented.
I will say that if you decide to go the anime direction (especially if you go down the slice-of-life/romance route), I'm going to stick with you and give you a view and a like.
I would definitely like for us to discover more anime media 🤗
While western animation has tended to be targeted towards children, anime isn't pigeonholed in the same way. It has the same range as western live action movies, which cover everything from "made for kids" to "absolutely not appropriate for kids". There just isn't the same concept that "cartoons are just for children". And under the influence of anime, that's a perspective western animation has started to embrace as well. But perhaps because it's more of an aberration from what we're historically used to, the more adult-oriented anime may tend to stand out more and so define the style in many people's minds.
Hope we get a Princess Mononoke reaction next!
I think she would love that one!
Some things are just meant to be a fun mystery. There is no need to always know everything. It is not an intelligence test. Just enjoy it for what it is.
Laputa the floating castle next pls or arrietty. Their from studio ghibli but if you want some sad story from ghibli it's grave of the fireflies
I didn't knew Grave of the Fireflies was from studio ghibli 😯
That one is really, really sad...
Howl's moving castle is good to ☺️ I like studio ghibli movies. Their classic anime movies. By the way when will you react to another ghibli movies?
@@williamapalla6831 My sister is a huge fan of Howl's Moving Castle! I honestly have no idea, depends one how well this video goes I guess xD For Patreon it's slightly different of course. And also a lot of people warned me that Studio Ghibli reactions can be very dangerous on youtoube... 😬
Ohhhh may Be they saying about princess monoske yep that's bloody/graphic movie but everything else is good no bloody scenes at all even grave of fireflies is not bloody even it's about war (except princess monoske don't watch that if you're skirmish about bloody scenes)
They didn’t mention this in the movie, but according to interviews of the director, Lin is a fox (she has a fox face indeed haha)
- Sen treats him with kindness and generosity, so he tries to do the same by giving her the bath tokens
- Frog and the other workers treat him with thinly-veiled greed, and he does the same eventually devouring them
- in the end, Zeniba treats him with kindness as well, praise, and offers him a place and a role with simple work and he seems to have found the best, healthiest place for himself
That he has no *face*, and wears a mask, all seem important, like he has no expression of his own, yet still appearing as if he was just "other people", like a personification of karma-how you treat others eventually comes back to you, and really seems like Miyazaki making social commentary of some kind..
Howl's moving castle react please. 🙏
Lucy looks like she belongs in the Clue movie.
Good luck with the copyright on this one.
This will be an interesting reaction.
Ahahah well, actually we will react to that movie soon
It would also be awesome for you too to check out your name.. another fantastic! Best of all time anime movie.
Umm...who has Lucy been hanging around with that she thought all anime like that?
That's a good question! Bet its because she grew up around a lot of teenage boys 😂
its a good place to start.
But akira would also be cool
Yes, a lot of people were also recommending that one for her! I've also never seen it, but it looks quite good 👌🏻
アニメーションの省略語がアニメですが、まだ世の中は偏見や子供の見る物など偏見があります。国連が日本の伝統を潰そうとしている事も懸念しています。
You shouldn’t speak when music come But focus and enjoy the music
I agree that this is one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
So... Lucy's idea of anime is One Piece/Ecchi...
Yeah, boys, we actually did it 😅
The x rated stuff is not simply referred to as regular anime. The x rated stuff is called Hentai. There are many different genres of anime. Regular anime may have minor nudity, but they draw the line at it becoming x rated. So don't be afraid to watch anime. It is not all the same.
Howls moving castle please and thank you
