I am 53 years old. I was 10 when Adventure came out for the Atari. My best friend at the time, Mark O'Neill, had a 2600 and the Adventure cartridge. Somehow he found out about the Easter Egg, and told me about it, and we spent about a week looking for it, until we finally found it. This movie made me so happy and so sad at the same time. My friend Mark passed away several years ago. I wish he were here to see the Easter Egg as a major plot point in a movie so many years later. RIP, Mark.

Yeah, the movie is fun, but they already had the perfect story. They just needed to make it true to the book and it would have been a crazy good movie. Even just the small decisions just don't seem well thought out, like the whole reason wade was able to complete the first challenge as a broke kid, was that halliday put the tomb of horrors on ludus because he wanted a poor schoolkid to win. Having it be a race that everyone already knows the location of just defeats the whole point and makes it less interesting.

11:14 The trials in the book were a *lot* more complicated. They had to simplify the story a bit to make it short enough to be a movie. Don't get me wrong, this is a *GREAT* movie, but the best way to truly experience this story is with the enhanced audiobook. The book's story is a lot longer and more complicated in general. It has all the sounds and references that are mentioned its amazing. Oh and the narrator is s celebrity mentioned in the book. That had to be a trip when he was reading it out, to mention his own name.

Born in 1970, I could relate to EVERYTHING in this movie. But I read the book afterwards, and have to say that it was even better.
    Or, let's say, different.
Because the movie had little to do with the book storyline nor with the puzzles and easter eggs presented. The characters were the same, the premise was the same, but that's pretty much it. This was MUCH more video gamer framed, whereas the book was much more cerebral and laced with a lot more pen & paper roleplay tropes. I could relate to anything, outing myself as a 1980's geek AND nerd, both from the book and the movie.
Both were great entertainment, if you could accept that neither was related anywhere closely to the other.

I totally get you. I can accept some changes like how the keys are found, since it's cool for book readers to have something new. You can't also reproduce all the references and cool scenes, and even on this point he movie did great. I still would have liked the first riddle to be kept like in the book, one made to be available for everyone, even people who couldn't leave the school planet.
What left a bad taste in my mouth was the ending. I mean, you're going to ban the use of the game two days a week? Have you forgotten why you even started playing it? The world didn't stop being a shitty place just because you found a girlfriend. What about the other people living in slums and being beaten by their relatives? The book felt more grounded, I even got shaken when I read the part where Wade's new financial status affected his health.
