  • I recently took up bobbin lace, and decided to restore my antique bobbin lace roll pillow. Watch me blunder through making it pretty again! (Disclaimer: do not watch if you are a professional repairperson of antique things, it will probably hurt.)
If you wish to support my endeavours, you can buy me a 'coffee' at: ko-fi.com/juulthijssen

    Materials I used:
    -Sturdy white cotton sateen
    -White linen
    -Cotton quilt batting
-Seagrass (from a flower arranging supply store)
    -Small nails
-Extra strong and regular sewing thread
    -Regular white wood glue
    -Pieces of lacing for gathering
(let me know if you are missing any other info, do not let me know if you disagree with my methods, 't is done.)

Lovely to see you back! My sister took up bobbin lace years ago long before YT and reduced herself to tears learning how to do it. I still have a ridiculously fine, delicate book mark she made for me that I have never used, just put it straight in a picture frame where it belongs. She recently took it up again after a gap of several years, and can remember everything she learned before at the age of 72! It seems to be so difficult it stays with you forever. We discovered in her 'gap' years that one of our ancestors was a real life Nottingham (UK) Bobbin Lace maker! Given the time and effort that goes into it, it's little wonder the very rich showed it off as the luxury it was - whilst the creators lived in poverty-grrrrrr!

Lacemaking history is interesting for sure, full of paradoxes! I hope your sister will have many many years of enjoyment in lacemaking!

Excellent job. Hope the pillow serves you well. I have made bobbin lace for more than 40 years and are still learning. I restored an old Flanders/ Dutch pillow similar to the one in Vermeer's painting. The wood had bore worm and had to be treated before I could restore. I kept a piece of the old covering in memory of the makers who used the pillow before me.

How interesting! I have not thrown away any of the stuff that came off it yet, I might pick out some things to keep like you did. Maybe a piece of fabric I can tack to the bottom.

Ah, qué interesantes resultan siempre tus proyectos, Juul.

@@JuulThijssen It had obviously been repaired several times before by previous owners, so I don't think that you were committing a crime against history in any way. Besides, things like this were made to be used, not to sit in cupboards gathering dust and providing nests for mice and insects. While I admit it is good to have examples of objects with evidence of their history present, preferably in museums where people can see and learn about the past, it is also good to have them in the possession of those who will use them for their intended purpose and enjoy doing so. They then become a living part of history, and help to keep the skills for which they are made from being lost to time. Perhaps some time in the not-too-distant future we may see an example of your lace-making efforts to enjoy and envy. Hope you have lots of fun using it.🤗

You did a wonderful job restoring the pillow, it looks so nice and new! I haven't done any restoration myself, but I did recently purchase a 1920s treadle machine which required a. lot. of cleaning, and of course had to be oiled, which I'd never done before. It's now in working order and is a delight to sew with.

if this lace bobbin lace pillow could talk, it probabky would say " I feel like my old self again but a hundred times better!" I don't blame you for not wanting to use the saw dust it can be very messy and a nightmare for carpet and vacuums.

What a fantastic restoration job you did on that lovely bobbin lace pillow. I've wanted to learn how to do bobbin lace for a number of years but have never tried. But I do have a bunch of bobbins and some books and designs that I found really cheap at a second hand store (with the books from a second hand book store). Now all I need is a nice bobbin lace pillow and the time to have a go (it will have to wait until I finish my librarianship degree I think as that is taking nearly all my mental energy at the moment).

I really enjoyed watching this video so i subscribed. I don’t do bobbin lace…yet. I’ve always wanted to learn it and your videos might just be the impetus I need to get on that. Right now i do a lot of knitting and tatting , with some hardanger, sewing, cross stitch, and drawn thread work, but I’m sure i can add one more craft.

Yay, you are back for some lovely restoration and bobbin lace making!! So enjoyed this video, I think you did an excellent job restoring your pillow. Do you think the seagrass will hold up over time, I was wondering about some clean raw wool packed in to pin into? Absolutely love that you are making bobbin lace, I greatly admire and respect the process, but think this is one thing I will not be adding to my DIY skills - lol!! But I collect and drool over the exquisite beautiful lace that others before me have made - such artists!! You are definitely one skilled artist - thank you for sharing.

The reconstruction was very interesting ... now I know how to make my own. I'm in US and pillows like this are very expensive to obtain from Europe. Trying to figure out where I can get seagrass from ...

I found it in a Belgian webshop for flower arranging (bloemschikmateriaal .be) but I bet there are other places that sell it. And I think there must be other materials to fill a pillow, some people said crushed walnut shells?

Thanks for making us a video, I'm sure it added many hours to the restoration job. Glad to see you back, in whatever capacity you chose to share with us!
Great idea on the Fray Check, I keep forgetting about that stuff. Having stuffed a tailor's ham with wood shavings, I totally understand wanting to use sea grass instead, that looked like it was way easier than trying to cram sawdust into a tube with both ends covered!! I hope the sea grass gives you what you need for pinning into, I've had a slough of failed pincushions made from cotton or linen cabbage that only a really sharp pin will stick into, cotton balls were just as bad, I finally settled on using hair from my hairbrush, that I soaked in laundry detergent as one might scour wool, and that's my favourite pincushion so far, even my cheapest dullest pins will go into it.
I'm just curious why you didn't glue that cracked bottom board? I hope the leather doesn't stretch over time.

I never thought about glue 😅 But it would have made much more sense haha!
