    If you have any great sprang resources you'd like to share, please do and I'll keep a list in the description box! We could also try to make a playlist with sprang tutorials, if anyone has any favourite ones?

    This looks like it would be perfect for those “fill a bag for $5” sales at my local thrift shop. It has that small unassuming look in the beginning but looks like it can expand and hold quite a lot of items!

    WOW! When I was little, my mother had several grocery bags from Chile that , apparently, were made using this process. I used to stare at them and wonder how the little netting was made. THIS process did not occur to me. I pictured a long process of taking thread -- maybe with nail or peg separators, and individual threads were woven in and out. Thank you, you answered a 50 year old question!

    Such fine yarn made a beautiful and delicate fabric. It’s the sort of bag that gets better with time I imagine as the leather strap becomes smoother with use. Your Dad did a great job with the handles and it’s lovely to have a shared input into this interesting project. Thank you for sharing this fascinating technique with us. 😘

    Well-done, Juul! What a clever project! I would like very much to try this, myself, now, with some linen cord that I happen to have. The weave is so stretchy that it's perfect for a shopping or harvesting pouch. Or a forager's bag! Whee!!!

    I've been wanting to try sprang for years but have never seen any tutorials and have never found any books. I love the look and stretch of the fabric! I understand it is one of the earliest clothing textiles and was used for many layers and styles of clothing! It made great stockings and leggings and undergarments because it would conform easily to the body shape!

    Love it! You picked yuch a big and wobbly project with such thin threads for your first, great work!
    We used to make smaller pieces with this technique in the kid's experimental archaeology group I was/am a member of and it was my favourite! I prefered the kind that makes diagonal diamond patterns and non-stretchy fabric, I always made mistakes in the stretchy one :D But few months back I searched for videos on the topic and found out there are possibilities for even very complex patterns in the stretchy sprang and was amazed! I need to try again soon :)
    We used the polish name "krosienka" for the technique, as I'm in Central Europe.

    There's a sprang variant that comes out like weaving on the bias. Archaeologists are only now finding examples due to mirrored errors, It is also really stretchy. But next time I try it I need 2 of the save-me threads.

    • @ragnkja
      @ragnkja 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So that you can put in the new lifeline _before_ you pull out the old? Good idea.

    • @ragnkja
      @ragnkja 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Being able to make a straight piece of fabric that acts like it’s on the bias would be _incredibly_ desirable for making hose. After all, cutting them out on the bias is really wasteful.

    • @JuulThijssen
      @JuulThijssen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been thinking about the different results you could get, I might try out more 'stitches' another time! The 2 save-me-threads are a life saver indeed, especially when the width is so big that you can't hold it all in your hand.

    Whoa, what a clever process. I'm a little nervous about how the handles stick to the leather as you're opening it, though - maybe add beeswax to the inside of the handles, and the outside of the leather? It will also help preserve both from water damage.

    • @ragnkja
      @ragnkja 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Beeswax is somewhat tacky, so another wax might be better.

    • @JuulThijssen
      @JuulThijssen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I might swap out the shoulder straps, because I noticed the same: they don't work perfectly with the handles.

  • @butterscotchgrove6151
    @butterscotchgrove6151 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's a beautiful and interesting technique - and your patience is admirable! Looks like you might not want to overload it with heavy stuff, though. Not because it couldn't hold the stuff, but because of the stretchiness - you might end up with a VERY. LONG. BAG. Still, it would be great as a knitting bag, as long as your needles can't escape. Or maybe the Inspector would like to move in to it?

    • @ragnkja
      @ragnkja 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can’t stretch any further lengthwise. The maximum length is defined by the warp.

    • @JuulThijssen
      @JuulThijssen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It stretches a lot (A LOOOOT) in the width but not in lengthwise... I suspect it has a lot to do with the pattern repeat I chose and so it might be different if you use another combination. The inspector is not allowed near this bag now that it's done, because he likes eating threads too much.

    This was a fascinating project! I admire your patience and care. It looks really lovely. Do you have to be careful of what kinds of things you put in it?

      Some of the threads did wear out in the weaving proces, so I'm a bit afraid of how much it will hold. Also, the holes are about as stretchy as the fabric itself, so thin and tiny things can fall out easily.

    My goodness, that's a lot of effort, but it looks like a useful bag. The supervisor was interested, but did he approve?

    Oh wow, you have such patience! I don't think I'd ever manage that 😂 How strong is the fabric? it looks lacy and delicate!

    • @JuulThijssen
      @JuulThijssen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's quite strong, but the holes stretch very easily. The threads did damage while I was braiding because it was such a long project, so I think that does diminish the strength a little.

    That looks amazing, I Don't think I've got the patience to do this kind of work at this time in my life though. Love the result, how long did it take?

    Hi ☺️ looks so good! I've started doing sprang myself, but I'm having trouble with making the bottom of the bags, would you explain more on how you finish the bottom? 😊

      There are a couple of methods, I used the crochet/knitting style finishing. Consider every thread in the middle of your work as a loop, and loop it through its neighbour. Start on one side and continue until you looped the whole width. You can use a crochet hook for this, but it feels like knitting to me. I tried an end through the last loop to keep it all in place.

    I was knitting while watching, I had to stop to really pay attention! I've only heard about sprang before, never seen it done O___O
    It's seems like it could fit a ton of stuff - do you have thoughts on the stability already?
