I love this kind of videos! as a slow reader, i like to take the time to fully immerse myself in each chapter, and take time to process it, so this style of read-along is perfect 😊 i'm grateful for your deep insights as a reader and writer, as well as your enthusiasm for the book, it makes the experience much more enjoyable. I'm very happy you are reading the whole trilogy, thank you for sharing with us! ⭐

Welcome aboard! Great to have another slow reader in the mix. I count myself as one, and prefer to really take in the story, especially one like this since it's a favorite.
We'll be doing the entire trilogy PLUS the prequel when it's released in October: Absolution.

Look forward to the next ones and continuing the southern reach journey. Thank you!

Annihilation. 10/10 book even on multiple rereads. Where my Vandermeer journey started.
    What a writer.
    Intriguing discussion.

Same. The first of his I've read, and the best in my opinion. It feels good revisiting it.

Thanks for doing this read-along. I picked up this book previously because you recommended it so highly in your other videos, but I was hesitant to start it because I didn’t love the film. I found it too moody broody. Nevertheless, I was absolutely engaged by this first chapter and I’m eager to keep reading. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts in this video. I feel like I’m back in a university lit tutorial (and I mean that in the best, most stimulating way). Looking forward to the rest of this journey.

Thanks for giving the book a shot finally. Now is definitely the best time since so many of us are reading it.
If it helps any, the book and movie are very different stories with the exception of the setup.
Glad you're along for the ride.

Annihilation's a magical book, glad to see you covering it.
While Borne is my favorite of VanderMeer's work. The Southern Reach trilogy is a close second and was really the one that sold me on VanderMeer's talent. I remember when I read it in 2018 that I had the distinct feeling I had never read anything like this before. Sure there's Tarkovsky's Stalker or Lovecraft's The Colour Out of Space which deal with similar ideas, but with Annihilation, when I read it I felt like there was something that I hadn't considered before, told in a way I didn't expect. It was science fiction in a way that unlocked new doors of the genre. It's intoxicated me ever since.
I can't make up my mind on if I like Annihilation or Authority better. I love the surreal acid trip that is journeying into Area X in Annihilation, but I also love seeing Control slowly lose his mind and realize that he's a pawn in a much bigger system than he initially thought. Also Authority had a moment that literally caused me to jump in surprise, that's not happened before or since I read it.
Keep up the good work Jason, I've missed these.
