  • What is mysticism? What is Christian mysticism? If you're curious or skeptical about either of those questions, welcome to my channel!
My name is Jon, and I've been studying ancient Christian mysticism academically for several years and applying its principles to my own faith. I think it has great potential to return Christianity to a better practice of Jesus' vision, and to help individual Christians have deeper experiences of the Spirit of our faith. That being said, there's a lot of work to be done to make our mystical traditions more accessible and easier to practice - hence this channel.
So explore Christian mysticism with me, until Christ is formed in us! Questions and comments are more than welcome.
If you want to start with more mystical prayer practices right now, instead of waiting for me to get around to them in a video, check out my book, Present to the Presence of God, available from Amazon: amzn.to/32ywxD1

I’m a Muslim who has always been into mysticism - known as Sufism/‘irfān in the Islamic tradition. I have a deep appreciation for mysticism in all religions but I recently became particularly interested in Christian mysticism through the work of Meister Eckhart. I’m so glad to have found this channel ❤️

@@withjonadams Thank you :) I would recommend the work of Seyyed Hossein Nasr who I would argue is one of the foremost authorities on Sufism and Islamic philosophy in the West. He has a lovely book called “The Garden of Truth: The Vision and Promise of Sufism, Islam's Mystical Tradition”, which would probably be a good starting point.

I’ve been a Christian Mystic for years, although not in any formal sense of it. I’ve had a deep and personal mystical walk with Jesus since I was very little. Once Baptism in the Holy Spirit happened, my walk became even deeper. This side of Christianity is not taught in many churches. I am Catholic but not by birth. I have always been drawn to the Mystics in the Earlier Church, who were often persecuted for their intense and clear connection to the Holy Spirit and the revelations shared by Him. I’m so happy to have found another soul who is promoting this life. It’s often quite lonely. Bless you my brother, for your messages

Interesting video, Jon. It's not the word "mysticism" I'm afraid of, it's "Christian." Raised in a very religious family, I tried my hardest to follow the Bible, prayed constantly and did everything I was supposed to do according to the rules and regulations set forth, but could never make myself believe most of what was contained in the Bible. It was like rubbing sandpaper on my skin, so as an adult I shoved it aside, stopped letting many hypocritical "Christians" drag me down because I couldn't make myself believe in many aspects of the Bible, but all along knowing there was something there that I hadn't yet found. It burned deep inside me. I'm not really into labels, but I suppose I aligned with agnostic most of my adult life. A couple years ago I felt guided to a place where I found spirituality (so different from religion!), and the doors were blown open for me! Things started to move in my life like never before. It's a daily education process for me, so your video titled, "...CHRISTIAN mysticism" caught my eye and curiosity. I have to admit that Bible talk is off-putting to me, but I appreciate what you're doing and love your spirit. I sincerely hope the very best for you on your path to finding purpose while helping others find theirs! It's a beautiful thing you are doing!

Jesus didn't call himself a Christian nor did the apostles. Humans tend to try and categorize and quantify everything. Ask Jesus to reveal Himself to you. Forget the "religion".

Jesus was called 'The Christ'. The Enlightened. So Jesus the Enlightened. Jesus never gave his teachings a name. Also remember the bible has been edited and curated over the centuries, so don't feel bad if it doesn't resonate.

The apostles prophesied the things that Christianity has suffered for so long.
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.
      [1 Peter 2:1]
For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
      [Jude 1:4]
A concept that is identified in both of the scriptures, above, is the fact that false teachers deny the Lord. Peter points out how they will introduce destructive heresies. Jude points to the way they turn the grace of our God into licentiousness.
Truly, one is the same as the other.
      And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned;
      [2 Peter 2:2]
For speaking out arrogant words of vanity they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error,
      [2 Peter 2:18]
The Greek word rendered "sensuality", in 2 Peter 2:18, is aselgeiais. The Greek word rendered "licentiousness" in Jude 1:4 is aselgeian.
The point is this: The Way taught by Christ was a way of suffering. False teachers are sensual and, as such, turn aside from The Way into places more pleasing to the senses.
By turning from The Way, false teachers deny the Lord. They deny the character of Truth that, literally, only belongs to Christ.
Worse than that, they entice others, by fleshly desires and sensuality, to follow them into heresy (i.e., division).
This condition lasts long enough that people will begin to malign the Truth. And, in the last days, those malignant people will openly mock those who have grown up under the various forms of godliness that deny the power thereof- the same religious forms which had, long before, been set up by false teachers.
Peter's remedy is found in 2 Peter 3...
1This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles.
      Paul says the same...
17Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them. 18For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting.
      [Romans 16]
3If anyone advocates a different doctrine, and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, 4he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, 5and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. 6But godliness actually is a means of great gain, when accompanied by contentment. 7For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. 8And if we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. 9But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many a pang.
      [1 Timothy 6]

I know from the moment of conversion that it was a deep experience and intimacy with God that can be obtained.. I have longed to find others that felt the same way.. I have always told others that the other way to truly know God is by taking Him out the box, that bound by tradition and religion.. Thank you I’m so honored and glad that I’ve found this channel..

I'm so glad I found this video. I feel like I've fallen into a deep rabbit hole of gaining all the knowledge that is purposefully so hidden from us starting back to the very beginning of everything in my own understanding that's not standardized by a specific religion. It seems religion is all just theory of ones opinion or understanding, brought to a council of several churches or tribe leaders(using my own labeling as example. Not to be taken as literal) to agree to be the best way of explaining, then separated into different theology that we take as facts rather than theory. As if one person does, or could ever know the truth behind our existence. What theory every(if not most.. [I'm still learning]) religion does agree on is that each person does have some sort of "soul" or "conscience" that was some how created either before or during our conception.

Matt S there’s an international group physically located in Venice, Los Angeles, California. They also travel and hold meetings all over the world. The ministry is called AACTEV8 and they meet at Venice united Methodist church. Very loving and welcoming community, they truly love the Lord and one another and it’s encouraging to be able to ask questions of other Believers that we often don’t get to ask in a typical church setting. The international community is also fairly active online. I’ve met some absolutely incredible people there who have a deep love for the Lord. I attended in person while I lived in LA, changed my life completely. We are all connected around the world by the Holy Spirit if not in the physical. 😊 I’ve personally felt alone much of my life in my deeper pursuit of God but I discovered there are MANY of us. The more I engage stepping into Heaven the more I feel connected with the Body of Christ in the Spirit and the more I’m aware of Heaven in my present world and begin to see the Spirit in my natural everyday life. Heaven really is at hand, it’s all about tuning in to His frequency, His name. Just keep engaging the Kingdom and trust the Lord to take care of community, He will connect you. Sometimes we are also Pioneers within our community, so embrace being unaccepted as we share in the suffering of being hated for Christ. It is a blessing :) you’re so awesome, bless you bro!

Mysticism can't really be bound by any denomination and any denomination that claims to be made up entirely of mystics, is almost guaranteed to not be full of mystics. Mystics exist as a tiny minority in almost all major denominations- especially Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. However, Lutheranism and Anglicanism do allow for mysticism- although Protestants are more skeptical. But it's not super common in any denomination. I recommend going to a church that follows the historical blueprint of Jesus and Apostles. Any of the churches I named before should be fine. That's just what I would recommend though. Also, pray the Jesus Prayer often. God bless.

I am a Mystic because the Holy spirit dwells with me. I am a Mystic because i know Jesus on a personal level. I have a deep connection with my Lord through Meditation. Through meditation i try to walk with Jesus in the the heavenly realm. Yea i know bible verses, yes i have listened to Christian radio and tried to cram all that i read into my mind but when i started to Meditate i just felt my relationship with Christ is a little deeper. So i will continue to grow this way.

It may be popular belief right now to think it is black magic. It is not. There IS other books within kabbalah not accepted by all. Around 6:07, 'all the parts competing'...I think this is why the formation of a new ego / identity / persona structure, likely within the framework of some form of Christian dogma (dogma meaning a non falsifiable view or worldview which is nevertheless examined, and accepted), is the formation of 'new vessels' which allow the 'New Wine' to be poured into, so as to not 'burst the vessels', as sometimes happens with some 'mystics' or 'new age' types, who receive a tiny bit of light, and then capitalize on it for egoic purposes, and WITHOUT a strong ethos framework, and then go, well, a bit bananas

❤You said in the video something like "christian mysticism disciplines help you become more united with ." Hhowever it is my belief that all men and women, even atheists, are already perfectly united with God. Not because of our own works but because of Jesus perfect work that has been imparted to us along with his righteousness. So it's not that belief in Jesus and repentance of sins helps you unite with God more. But instead, it helps you become more aware of your perfect union with God, and just helps you know God more and know yourself more. What are your thoughts on this? ❤

So, I have been reading Richard Rohr lately and slowly finnding a new understanding of my religious roots (raised Catholic but walked away long ago). He talks about contemplation a lot (like, a lot). Is contemplation like meditation (meditation in the Eastern sense of the word)?

    • @withjonadams
      @withjonadams  3 ปีที่แล้ว

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different meditation practices and perspectives in the East. Christian contemplation certainly has its own flavor distinct from them, but there are also tons of different ideas on contemplation. I think I need to make a video about this, thanks for the question :)

I'm sorry, but it was not to "see Himself", as you say. if this is what you were saying using different terminology, great, but I found this really confusing. Reading the books of the New Testament, we probably asked ourselves more than once: *"Why 2000 years we do not see those miracles that accompanied the Сhurch of Christ in the I century, as described in the New Testament?"* Why do the so-called preachers of Christ have to prove that Jesus really existed and atheists boldly deny the historicity or divine origin of Christ? Maybe because the Сhurch of Christ has not existed for 2000 years?
The Сhurch does not exist in the form in which it is presented in the books of the New Testament, but there are Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and other christian sects claiming to be the place of the Church, but they not have the only thing that distinguishes the divine from the human and is characteristic of just the Сhurch of Christ -the reinforcement of the word with signs, that is, miracles (Mark 16:15-20). Therefore, some researchers doubt the historicity of Christ, and some of them are not opposed to declaring him a an ordinary philosopher, teacher. But even if Jesus were an ordinary philosopher, his disciples would be ordinary followers of Jesus. And they would not dare to write about the miracles that not only Jesus, but also his disciples, could perform. In this world, the great fertility of atheism can be explained by the fact that there is no main opponent of critics of the Bible - the Church. If there were the Church in our time as described by the authors of the New Testament books, where miracles are performed, the sick are healed, where prophesied, and the dead are raised, no one would doubt the historicity of Christ. Then there would be the same controversy throughout the world as in the first century - Jesus the Son of God or the false prophet who seduces the world by miracles. As a result, we can say that the emergence and development of christian sects and atheism was the result of the fact that over the 2000 years the Сhurch of Christ did not exist.
Find *"The Mystery about the Church of Christ"* video on TH-cam. The video reveals the prophecy of the disappearance and reappearance of the Church of Christ before the End of the World. Watching this video will give hope to all who sincerely seek God and will interest those who are not too lazy to think freely. Some may wonder about my recent consideration of the term "consciousness". Think of three guys who enter a car expo. The attention of one is drawn to blonde wearing the blue evening gown. The attention of another is drawn to a red Ferrari. The attention of the pickpocket is drawn to all whose attention is on the spectacle.
I think of attention as consciousness.
The attention of the sensual man is on things he can taste, see, smell, hear, and feel. The attention of the spiritual man is drawn to the Jerusalem that is above.
22But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, 23to the general assembly and church of the first-born who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, 24and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel.
    [Hebrews 12]
There is a potential for those who have been born of the Spirit to become aware of...
    1. The heavenly Jerusalem,
    2. Myriads of angels,
    3. The general assembly and church of the first-born who are enrolled in heaven,
    4. God, the Judge of all,
    5. The spirits of righteous men made perfect,
    6. Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and
    7. The sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel.
How many of us have spent time regretting that we have given our attention- our consciousness- to things that are passing away rather than keeping our minds on the marvelous things above?
1If then you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. 3For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.
    [Colossians 3]
I've been in a Russian Orthodox Church wherein, near the ceiling, was a shelf that ran around the sanctuary. On that shelf were figures that represented characters from the Bible- as if to help worshipers remember that there is a great cloud of witnesses.
The question the worshiper must ask himself is "Do those witnesses concern themselves with my unfaithfulness, or God's faithfulness".
Spirits of righteous men made perfect will, forever, praise the One who is faithful and true.
Let's encourage each other to shift our awareness.
I, for one, would like to be like those guys represented by figures on the shelf at the Russian church: reminding men to clear their minds of earthly things in order to see the eternal.
