Mystical Experience Changes How the Bible Speaks to You | Holy Mystical Bible Study with Jon Adams
This is the final episode of my Introduction to the Bible series. In this episode, I finally talk about my own mystical experience with the Bible. I also talk about the difference between how the ancient mystics read the Bible, and how we read the Bible today. Some questions discussed in this video:
Can Bible reading enlighten you?
What is Christian mysticism, in practice?
How did the old mystics read the Bible, and what are we missing?
What does mystical experience teach you about yourself?
How does mystical experience change how you read the Bible?
How does mystical experience change how the Bible speaks to you?
What are the goals of mystical Bible reading?
How can I read the Bible mystically?
If you’ve followed along with the whole series, thanks for watching! If not, check out the other videos in this playlist for an introduction to what the Bible is, how we got it, and how to use it.
This is the last video I’ll be able to publish for a couple weeks. When I come back, I’ll be posting weekly mystical Bible study videos, starting with the Gospel of John.
Make sure you’re subscribed and notifications are on, and I’ll see you soon. Meanwhile, here are some links to my website and to my book, Jesus: A Field Manual: How to Live the Sermon on the Mount.

The mystics meditate. Mark 13:37 I say to you and to all, Watch. Watch means become awaken. Make thine eye single. Seek the kingdom It’s within. Woe to those who do not enter within. The prodigal son is the “Christian” or the religious man. He is called back to meditation where the “God” mind is. The mind that has no “man” thought. Christian can’t read the Bible because Proverbs 1:6. They don’t know any ancient sayings.

Mysticism is (re)union with the Creating Force...whatever name you (Ego) need to assign it...once you add on the Christ label, it devolves into Bible rhetoric.

Thank you for your more focused approach. At this point I do believe mysticism is result of the revelation of Jesus in our own hearts, and the more we work on being obedient and studying his ways in prayer through obedience, we become mystical at least that’s what it looks like to the world around us looking at us, I have subscribed I thank you again I’ve been watching past videos your testimony, and more who has encouraged me thanks again and God bless you in the name of the father, the son and the Holy Spirit

Hey :) could you please make examples of what the insights are that you get from the bible, that you then ask god about, meditate about, etc.? If its not too personal. I don't get anything without examples tbh

Hi :) what about the rosary? I tried meditating for years and it never did anything for me. Then I started praying the rosary and I reach meditative state in minutes and I LOVE it. Also, it is proven that it lowers your heart rate rather quickly and is a more effective way to get into a relaxed state than a lot of other relaxing techniques. ❤

Totally Awesome Truth. I've been reading the Bible Spiritually for a number of years. It has enriched my understanding of God, the world, other people and myself. Being a believer in a mystical understanding of God's word, Nature, experiences, and circumstances has taught me that God can speak through anything and everything in his creation.

Hey Jon, I'm new to your channel. Though I could be considered "new age" (I'm not a big fan of any labels). But I do absoluety have a personal relationship with Jesus. No disrespect intended here at all. But could you please clarify, could people like John the Baptist or even Moses not be considered as "enlightened" beings. If so, did there enlightment come to them through Jesus, as explained in this video?

I look forward to listening to this series! As I am wrapping up my MTS program, I have recently found myself unable to stop thinking about how closely Pentecostalism (the tradition I grew up in and continue to practice) is connected with Roman Catholic/Eastern Orthodox mysticism. I have been digging into texts like Daniel Castelo's "Pentecostalism as a Christian Mystical Tradition", along with other texts to compare the lives and practices of the medieval mystics to some of the early American Pentecostals... I cannot stop wondering what applied Christian mysticism could mean for ministry to spiritual seekers, Buddhists, etc... I look forward to hearing what you have to say on the topic of Christian mysticism, especially with the way you have made it very practical by applying the ideas to Bible study.

@@withjonadams Castelo and his wife also wrote a peer-reviewed article titled, "Caring for Contemporary Mystics: Pentecostalism and the Mystical Worldview" for the Journal of Spiritual Formation & Soul Care. In it, they quote Harvey Cox's book "Fire from Heaven," where he wrote about those with Spirit baptism. He wrote, "Spirit baptism was not just an initiation rite, it was a mystical encounter. That is why they sometimes sounded like Saint Teresa of Avila or Saint John of the Cross, although they had probably never heard of either one." This has become my favorite quote. Thanks for sharing the enthusiasm! My husband and I will be listening to your videos!

This is wonderful teaching, Jon. Thank you. It's very helpful to think of Gratitude as a "practice" rather than as a fleeting emotional response. A practice I like that works similarly, I think, is conciously remember good things and meditating on them until they are fixed in your memory. It really helps counteract all the scary or frustrating memories that cling to us like burrs.😊

Mysticism is ultimately not about understanding christian doctrine and the Bible, but rather about directly experiencing and communing with Christ and God. You emphasize intellectual understanding way to much in order even to get close to proper mysticism.

❤You said in the video something like "christian mysticism disciplines help you become more united with ." Hhowever it is my belief that all men and women, even atheists, are already perfectly united with God. Not because of our own works but because of Jesus perfect work that has been imparted to us along with his righteousness. So it's not that belief in Jesus and repentance of sins helps you unite with God more. But instead, it helps you become more aware of your perfect union with God, and just helps you know God more and know yourself more. What are your thoughts on this? ❤
