  • To be honest, my first impression of the new Lumix S9 was kinda "meh". However, after getting the chance to use it over a week or so, I weirdly started to love it. It's quirky for sure, but it's also very capable and a blast to take photos with! Let me know your thoughts below.

Personally, they should've released 2 options just like they did with the S5 II. The second one being a less video centric version, with an EVF, a mechanical shutter, and just a tilt screen. That's why I don't consider this a Fujifilm V100 killer. It's more of a 1500-dollar web cam to me at least.

The one thing that I hate is no view finder, I purchased my first DSLR 15 years ago because the point and shoot cameras started doing away with the view finder, this is the same reason that I hate taking photos with a phone, the photograph experience sucks.

Beautifully shot review. I def think this is the best choice for beginner photographers over the x100. I think being a full frame interchangeable lens camera makes it exponentially more dynamic than a fixed lens APSC camera. The LUTs are great, but adapting some affordable vintage lenses will give your photography and video a natural unique flavor, that people are obviously craving right now. The full frame lenses they collect will work perfectly with a larger, more expensive camera body if they decide to upgrade in the future.

My first interchangeable lens cameras were the Zenit B followed by a Nikkonrmat FTN, bought well over 50 years ago. I look back to those days of camera simplicity when I managed without multiple button dials and a menu system. Cameras such as this S9 give me a little hope. Much of the missing stuff wouldn't bother me - I have shot extensively with electronic shutters and the rarely encountered distortion sometimes adds to the artistic look of the photo. It doesn't bother me. I probably would miss having an EVF and would swap the mode dial for an exposure comp dial. But I have enough cameras already.

Thanks Connor..everyone seems to find some great things and a few issues as well. For me the 15 minute clip limit doesn’t make sense, given it seems to be able to run for 4 or 5 15 minute clips with no issues. That said, not really a camera for any one to do long sessions. Seems focused on folks who, want to turn something creative and turn around around in the short term for social media etc. but like any camera, you can use for almost anything if you work around the limitations. I thought DP review stated it well ‘ if you, learned photography using something camera shaped, then this likley isn’t who this was designed for…if you learned photography using something flat and phone like, this is for you’. Suspect most would still find often fun to use at times, which says a lot. Btw I do think the green version was the best choice and produces the best results! Highly subjective perhaps.

Oh yeah the green one actually takes better photos for sure ha. Yeah this camera has many limitations. It was for sure confusing at first, but I agree, this is made for phone users to get their first camera. The weird thing is, it is kinda super capable too. Idk it’s goofy.

Interesting release - as a long time photographer, I can say that at no time in the last 35 years that I I've ever dreamed of a camera that had no flash though. Seems focused more on video shooters on the go - maybe street photographers, as long as they aren't panning at anything. I love the look though - the small rig grip makes it look like Lumix should have out of the design studio. Your review seemed fair, and spot on about 1.5K not being a good price point. I'm a Lumix user and own three of their bodies - I think they missed a large section of the market looking for a compact Fuji alternative.

    • @connormccaskill

Yeah I’ve been hearing that the lack of flash support is kinda a big deal. I’ve actually never shot photos with flash, I’ve always favored constant light or natural light. But Cam was saying flash support would have been better.

I love that they added 65:24 aspect ratio. With Fuji I think you have to go to GFX medium format to get it and now there are rumors stating that Fuji is thinking of releasing Xpan model when they could simply add this aspect ratio at least to their 40mpix APS-C sensors. Ridiculous.

I have multiple Camera applications, with S5 II s’ but I am in the market for a EDC that can match my Cameras for a Safety Angle for Event Shooting.
Due to the great image quality, I could use the S9 even though the recording limitations would make me rethink my Event workflow. But Connor is right, with a limited recording time in today’s market this should not as close in price to the S5 II. The price lends itself to a debate of why not just buy the S5 II, whether you are a content creator, newbie, etc.

First, the notion that the only camera worth using is full frame is nonsense, you can take beautiful photos with any camera, using a full frame camera will not make you a better photographer, and for many people that don't print huge photos it won't matter as most people will never photograph events, do a high end photo shoot or print their own work. For many people a full frame camera is a status symbol or to feed their ego. My self I have been involved in digital photography for over 15 years, I own 1 Pentax K1 MKII, Panasonic S5 and S5 MKII, Nikon Z6 MKII and ZF, and a Sony A7II along with APSC camera from all the above plus Fujifilm XT5, XT3 AND XH2. Lastly 5 micro 4/3, from Olympus and Panasonic. All the above serve a purpose with all the different types of photography I am involved in and for the most part I use the APSC and micr 4/3 more than the full frame cameras.

A complete nonsense statement when comparing Fujifilm with S9. Beside the size and similar price they have nothing else with each other. S9 is not photography camera and Fujifilm X100VI is not vlog style camera. When you make video then try to compare to something in the same style which is probably Sigma FP in this case.

Personally I disagree. But I see how you'd come to that conclusion. I feel like it's a camera you'd have to try to understand

@@connormccaskill There is nothing to try , they are two different things and S9 has nothing to do with photography. You compare camera without any mechanical shutter and EFC shutter with a leaf shutter which can use any flash to a hyper sync speed. One has no View finder and other one has OVF/EVF and higher resolution. For meter of shooting X-pan format one is probably better with second hand GFX 50R then with S9. For about same money it will blow away S9 when it comes to still image quality. As mentioned S9 is entry vlog content maker camera.

It's beyond comprehension: a camera that cannot be a real camera due to lack of a mechanical shutter: Night photos with dark bars (irrecoverable) and distortions of moving subjects because the electronic shutter is mediocre! A video mode that overheats and limits sequences of max 15 minutes with unpredictable cuts! A crude copy of film simulations that has nothing to do with the Art of Fujifilm. Can we really make fun of consumers who are not experts and who will buy this Lumix S9 with their eyes closed? When will there be a version without diaphragm adjustment to align with smartphones? They should also remove the SD card connection and limit its use to the small internal memory like a ‘carbon pass’! No mic jack, obviously. We have pushed the limits of ridiculousness.

Man tbh, I felt pretty similar to you when I saw the announcement video. But truly it was a blast to use. It’s definitely not a camera for everyone, but it sure is for some!

I can say that the absence of a mechanical shutter makes it a no for me (bars in the photos is a constant problem for me indoors), but I really like the LUT/app stuff.

Cannot be a Real camera,What does that even mean? You either don’t know anything about photography or are simply a snob that thinks you can only get results with ultra high end equipment.

Look like the LUMIX GM5 but a bit bigger and w/ no rfinder. Heavy on hands? Unbalance with lens? Need to see and try before go ahead to buy.

Yeah it’s a weird camera for sure. I’m glad I got to use it so I could understand what it’s good for

Yes, it's a lot of features, good for starters, with Lut features, around $1300, a deal. L mount could use Leica lens 😮
