    You only put a seal on the intake valve, it is to prevent vacuum from pulling oil into the combustion chamber. Not needed on the exhaust, that's why only 4 in the kit. You can put them on the exhaust if you want to but the heat could cause an issue with them and they are not needed on the exhaust. I am actually putting all new valves in one of my 8N tractors today, cut all the seats and lapped last weekend.

    I don't see that there is any missing seals. That other slot is where the valve guide retainer clip locks into.

    I purchased a complete engine gasket kit from fixthatford for my 49 8n and it came with 8 value guide seals.
    I use fixthatford for all my parts, very good customer service and quick delivery.

    Seals only on intake values

    Just 4 seals because they are only used for intake valves, the exhaust valves dont need them. I got this information on the 9N 2N 8N Yesterdays Tractor Forum. But when ordered from them ya get 8 ?????????????

      You are correct, I have the shop manual.

    I just rebuilt the engine on my 1949 ford 8N tractor, took it to a machine shop to have them install new sleeves and new intake and exaust valves, got it all back together and it cranked right up. two valves were ticking , not very loud though you can hear them ticking real good with a stethescope. I adjusted them all five different times and # 2 piston valves are still ticking. can i just adjust # 2 piston valves and not the rest, this is wearing me out. HELP

    Thanks for showing the home made tool. Removal and installation is impossible without something to compress the spring. Unfortunately, the Ford service tools are long gone unless you can find one at a swap meet. Nothing on ebay.

    Seals only go on intake valve guide on most flat head engines. Reason being; intakr side has vacuum against it and exhaust doesn't

      thats not true in this circumstance

      And the exhaust valves get too hot. it would burn o-ring out.

    Those seals only go on the intake and not the exhaust valve

    There are only 4 rubbers because they only go on the intake valve

    I take the seals and I set them in hot water for a minute and then it stretches right over the guides. Cold rubber is always stiff when its cold.

    Your only supposed to put seals on the intake, exhaust gets too hot ,

    The last 8N Ford engine I rebuilt had seals on all the guides.

    To bad about the 4 valve guide seals I would certainly put in a legitimate complaint! My comment is THANK YOU FOR NOT SWEARING I APPRECIATE THAT! God bless you both!!!

      Only came with 4 seals because they only go on the 4 intake valves. The exhaust valves get hot and melt them.

    Exhaust don't get any seals

    When you got the block, did you get the bearing caps with it?

    • @GunTractor
      @GunTractor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I'm pretty sure we got new ones.

    I've found that a little lube on the guide seal before installing helps them slide into the groove a little easier without them rolling (turning inside out).

    Was that the rotating or non rotating valve kit?

    • @GunTractor
      @GunTractor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it was a rotating kit...not entirely sure though.

      Looks like rotating, my ‘49 has rotating ex. valves.

    Follow your tractor manual and take your time, don't be in a hurry.

    never showed how to adjust the valve clearance.

  • @keithwarkentin
    @keithwarkentin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The valves are so close to one another that in my opinion the temperature difference would be negligible.

  • @abclosing2001
    @abclosing2001 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you measure the clearance on your valves

    • @GunTractor

      Yes, if I remember right we did.

    Great vid (funny stuff)! My question was on factory valves there was endcap ? New kit not included ? Installed without hoping for the best

    How important is "Lapping"

    • @GunTractor
      @GunTractor  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late reply, Ive been pretty busy. . It is really important to do so that the valves will seat/seal into the block properly.

    • @rickw7374

      What do you mean by “lapping”?
