It's been years since I read this, so I could be justifying the ending, but I took it that Cathy realized she was close to death and went to the attic to die (as opposed to going up there and then dying). Granted, you have to accept she could time it that well, but I had a neighbor who knew she was close to death and laid out all the necessary paperwork on the dining room table to make things easier for her son, so the realization seems to be possible

I agree. It's been a while, but that is also how I remember it.

I read this as a teenager, but never revisited it. Every book in this series could have ended the story. Since the core of the story is Cathy’s resentment and need for revenge against her mother, that does definitively conclude in If There Be Thorns. This book is almost an epilogue to catch up on the damage done by her actions and a lot of it seems unnecessary.
It is disappointing Cathy and Christopher ended up exactly like their parents. Considering their history, I would have thought they would make a conscious effort to avoid that.
Interested to hear what you have to say about Garden of Shadows. That book is … well, that book exists.

I know in the Lifetime Bart ended up with his adopted sister Cindy and I think that’s such a funny irony. He’s like a mix of both of his grandparents being religious zealots but also having this deep dark secret. At least they’re not biologically related 🤷‍♀️
Also it’s interesting that in the Lifetime adaptation the adult Bart jr’s physical appearance is exactly how Bart Sr should’ve looked like

Are you going to review the prequel, Garden of Shadows?

@@JoshuaJClarkeKelsall cool! I have really liked your reviews so far. I hope you will do one of the Casteel series in the future, too.

Always nice! Have you ever thought to read / talk about any novel by Nikos Kazantzakis? The Last Temptation or Christ Recrucified?

Yeah this book was hella frustrating. Cathy though is shackled by her guilt - as she should be! That's why she stays with him. She knows damn good and well that Bart's nuttiness (genetics aside) is her fault, her AND Chris'. Chris was a SHIT. He was NOT wonderful. He was conducting a perverted sexual relationship with his sister. And everyone, Jory, Cindy and of course Chris and Cathy just sort of shrug their shoulders and say oh well. No wonder Bart went nuts! He became a religious zealot partly because of his "parents'" perversity. So I can't count him as a total villain. The big problem with the Dollanganger series is this underlying notion that if the person is BEAUTIFUL then they must also be GOOD. And if they are GOOD they must be forgiven everything, no matter how off the wall it is.
Sadly, I remain team Bart (#teambart) in this story. Because as bad as he is, everyone else is ACTUALLY worse. And the only thing I hold against Melody is leaving her kids. Because you can't just live in this kind of madhouse. And Cindy was a little ho' bag, lol (it's funny cause it's true...)

I don't get what you mean by Bart's "genetics" playing into his mental health or storyline. He isn't a product of Chris, so he's not inbred. Bartholomew Winslow, Corrine's second husband (the lawyer) is Bart's biological father.
This reviewer actually got that wrong himself in his last review of the previous book, 'If there be Thorns'.
