In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to the unbelievable cover of Jump (Van Halen) by British Guitarist @mikedawesofficial . I was blown away by Mike's interpretation of this classic song...and by his act of gifting it to us all. I'm paying it forward by not monetizing this video. RIP Eddy!

Thanks so much for the nice words Doug! Really appreciate your time and support. RIP EVH ❤️
You’re welcome! Great playing!
@@Doug.Helvering You're a master, thank you.
Mike you absolutely floor me. Carry on brother, carry on!!
I see Eddy smiling while you’re playing this.
Thanks to you and to Doug for sharing this.
I've just become acquainted with your work Mike. Simply superb! Thanks for honouring such a great legend like Van Halen with an astonishing version

"Almost brings a tear to your eye, doesn't it?"
No, it *absolutely* did.
I can't hardly hear jump in that version.
It definitely was a rush. No external chemicals needed.
Me too!!!!
Watch him do this on Rick Beato’s channel. H discusses why he changes the string tuning then transcribes it into D. Gives him stronger bass notes and better chord inversions. Absolutely a master of his guitar. And his finger style gives it a whole different feel.
Mike is just a treasure within the guitar community and his tribute to Eddie was so very heartfelt (and appreciated). Check out Mike's version of John Mayer's "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" for another treat.
Mike Dawes is very well known among Moody Blues/Justin Hayward fans. We've been blown away by his playing since he started touring with Justin several years ago. The guy is phenomenal!! I've been fortunate enough to see him live on 12 occasions and he just gets better and better. Thank you so much for sharing this, Doug. I'm so glad you featured it because Mike deserves to have a much wider audience. He's done solo albums that are well worth hearing and buying too!
Justin Hayward....now there's a ridiculously talented guy
@@jasonlawson8980 Couldn't agree more!
The mark of a master, his or hers ability to make it look effortless.
Brilliant, Mike Dawes, a landmark interpretation.
I'm a friend of Mike's, and I can tell you that he's as genuine and cool as he is talented- which is saying a lot! I urge you to check out his original work= he''s simply incredible!
Edward had that ability like all great composers to make music that sounds both simple and elegant, and then you go to learn how to play it, and you realize how much stuff is going on in there. It's alchemy. Lots of love for Mike and this style of guitar playing too, and his tone is gorgeous. Clearly I need to find more time to play, these younger guitarists are amazing. Thanks for the video.
Further proof that Edward was a great song writer.
Doug during that listen through, especially in the second half, you look like a kid discovering rock and roll for the first time and just in awe. The ability of music to elicit such joyus and giddy emotions in people is an incredible and invaluable quality. I have no doubt that your genuine enthusiasm and energy will be infectious, leading many who watch to perhaps delve into Van Halen for the first time, or to discover Mike Dawes' excellent music.
Keep up the hard work and the sincere, genuine love of music and the power it has!
EDIT: Also, love the technical analysis, breakdown, and personal stories. They are what make you a great content maker instead of just some youtube chanel.
A true virtuoso who has not only mastered the instrument, he has mastered all the modern day tech gear needed to pull off a performance like that. He integrated the science in with the art flawlessly. Well played indeed.
Mike Dawes is simply incredible . He has a song „The Impossible“ which rightfully has millions of views.
Heard this when it was released, and it really is the ultimate tribute. So warm, such a celebration in his own words(so to speak), and even more fitting given Eddie's love of tone. It is an exultation of the man's life and contribution to music. Mike did a great job.
I cry every single time I hear this arrangement. So wonderfully played. At 65, Mike has really inspired me to work hard at my fingerstyle. I've been away from the guitar for 40 years. I recently purchased an acoustic 12 string and an acoustic electric 6 string along with a practice amp and some pedals... SO much to learn, so little time...
Man time is what it depend on how you use. 5 minutes a day or 5hours a day but do daily
@@bidyutdatta5042 yup. I practice daily for as long as my fingers will allow, multiple times a day. I do it on both my 6 and my 12 string. Slo and steady, trying to get perfect before fast... My first go around when I was in my early 20s, I did not focus on fundamentals. Even today, that muscle memory remains and requires retraining for proper technique.
@@jomama55ful that's inspiring. Text me on birat_datta if you need some nerd talk on Guitar
When Mike put this performance up as a tribute shortly after Eddie Van Halen passed, it was my favorite tribute. His son Wolfgang released a song with a video montage that made me tear up for different reasons, but it was Mike Dawes Jump tribute that made cry smiling, because you have an acoustic player who's genre is so very different showing the reach of the influence through this incredible arrangement.
If you think Mike Dawes is amazing and you haven't heard him cover Somebody That I Used to Know prepare to have your mind blown. Hoping to see him with Justin Hayward again, they were terrific together.
Truly impressive to arrange all the band parts into one solo guitar performance...harmonically it’s a beautiful song.
And the percussion as well!
That sounded so cool when you started accompanying Mike on the piano. Would love to hear a complete version of the song like that.
He plays the vocal line and the rhythm guitar part at the same time. That's damn cool.
Doug, all I was able to keep thinking while you enjoyed this was 'This is how one reacts to Mike Dawes.' No nonsense, the appropriate amount of awe, joy, and respect ... all reinforced by your own masterful understanding of music. Good stuff man.
Alip bata check !!! Solo finger style
Well put: "almost brings a tear to your eyes". It indeed is that good.
Alip ba ta spirit of Java MANTAP terimakasih
Thank you for doing this video. That was truly amazing. Kudos to Mike Dawes!!! That was just so inventive, well though out and all around beautifully played. Thanks again Doug and thanks to Mike. Definitely a nice little gift.
He is simply unbelievable ! My happiness knew no bounds when I learnt that he accompanied one of my most favourite bands Moody Blues’ Justin Hayward on his solo tour.
I love Mike! His acoustic style is just brilliant and he's such a great player :)
It is Real solo Guitar player?
If yes, he is incredable player.
My i have. The sources link to hear another song.?
Thank's Mike
We neeed more Van Halen on the channel! "Right Now" must be a good one, since it has Eddie playing the pianno.
Thanks for drawing our attention to this incredible rendition!
Thanks Doug for introducing this astonishing musician. I'll check out all his videos within the next hours and subscribe to his channel!!
Thank you Doug for bringing attention to this and I join you on the floor. Thank you Mike for a beautiful and intuitive tribute to Eddie and band.

honestly speaking... your reaction is the kind of reaction that i like... and as for mike, i always listen to travis meeks and mike dawes. these two gets me hyped every single day
Blew my flippin' mind when I first watched Dawes' video.
Dude is just BRILLIANT.
Oh wasn't expecting this! Mike is one of the absolute best fingerstyle players ever. Such an awesome arrangement. I've slowly been trying to figure it out but not easy! Tuning is DADGAD
I’ve seen Mike live several times over the past years and he amazes me every time. His version of Jump is just beautiful.
It is. Very beautiful. When the keys come in. I start to smile and giggle it's that good.. as musician's we know when someone is really good and lit. And on it. A GaME here
I really like that you don’t stop the video each time you want to comment on something. It doesn’t break the flow of the song, it’s great.
Yes, brought to tears...
I miss Ed, he wrote the soundtrack to my childhood.
And he just smiling and toying with the gitar.. i love it!
It's really Awesome. Such flair & at the same time very subtle. Fantastic guitar player👍👍. Love from India
Eddie is looking down and smiling his impish infectious smile and saying, 'he just might get me.'
This dude is great, I only got turned on to Mike Dawes recently by a work colleague. Jaw dropping. What a talent,
Shivers down my spine. Absolutely amazing.
Love how he decorated his guitar a la EVH.
Agreed. This blew me away the first time I saw it.
Every time I hear anything eddie I just can't get over he's gone he is one composer that will live forever
Jump was the first song I learned to play on the keyboards as a young man
He plays it so comfortably.
AWESOME!
Thank you for sharing, I too was blown away! But you articulate the wisdom of your music training.🙏🏻
I agree Doug. I have listened to several songs played by Mike Dawes now and he takes Acoustic Guitar playing to a whole new elevated level. Sad to hear that guitar legend EVH has passed away. RIP.
I love how happy this made you feel. Put the biggest smile on my face. I also loved when you accompanied him on the piano. Would love to see you make a video playing along with him.
When Ed passed I watched hundreds of tribute type videos and to be honest Mike's rendition of Jump is hands down the most sincere and beautiful masterpiece for a tribute to VH. Not knocking anyone elses work or video tributes but this piece is absolutely perfect... jus my opinion..😉
There's such a "sweetness" in this arrangement!! I just adore Mike Dawes ❤️❤️❤️❤️
This guy is amazing. Love Mike's work. Want to see this guy play
Yeah,,, he and Tommy Emanuel playing does bring tears
Tommy Emmanuel is someone l think is the best I've ever seen who incorporates several voices at once, it's worth checking out his version of while my guitar gently weeps.
And Classical Gas, incredible
Tommy is amazing i agree but mike dawes in my humble opinion is on a different level . Its guitar evolution , same as comparing hendrix to SRV and mayer.
Elle403 After watching a few more videos l kind of agree with you. He does use the whole of the guitar front back sides of the body, many fret techniques, under neck sounds and I've noticed some Spanish styles incorporated as well as advanced playing position and techniques. He did play with Tommy Emmanuel a while ago so l will look at that later.
When I first heard this I was floored. Sometimes it's good to be slayed, you wake up a bit, :D Happy 2023!
Thank you for giving this incredible musician some ❤
Check out Mike's live performances. It's fun to see him interacting with his audience
Eddy would have approved.... 100% positive!!!
Love it! Great arrangement and a awesome performance.
Eddie is listening to this in Heaven❤️🙏
I know man Id LOVE to see his face if he heard this
sbphillips177 Eddie's smile when he's really in the moment was brighter than a super nova, I carry the memory of his smile in my heart.
One of the greatest ways we can honor music and its creators is to take a piece and make it our own. No matter the skill level, even if it is just for you, keep playing, keep singing, keep writing, and you will be richer for it.
I'm actually crying right now. So beautiful!
Saw Mike Dawes open for Tommy Emmanuel in Connecticut. Enough said!
Permainan gitarnya sangat memukau dgn membawaksn lagu hits nya Van Halen - JUMP🤸I love it😍😍😍👍👍🙏🙏.

Beautiful...RIP EVH.Thanks Doug
That’s incredible, thanks for sharing.
Very beautiful, thank you for this moment
When I first saw him play this, I was floored too. And then I thought "that's how Tommy Emmanuel plays" and then the next video was the two of them playing together.
Absolutely amazing Doug thank you for sharing this Jump is my all time favourite song so miss Eddie
I just adore this. It's the best thing I have found on all of TH-cam. It just make my ears melt every time I hear it.
@mikedawesofficial is an absolute legend!!!
Agreed - Fucking Amazing
"VAN HALEN", one of the first records I bought. Great times.
That was beautiful to both hear and see, dude you make it look effortless. Instant fan. Cheers
This functions as a kind of double tribute, since Mike's friend and teacher, the late Eric Roche, also used to do a wonderful solo acoustic version of Jump
Wow. Amazing. The precision is just off the charts outstanding.
Yeah, I've seen this and we have to admire the talent of this quitar player.
Amazing..totally agree..beautiful
Wow. What a player. Such a great version. Doug thanks for sharing.
God... some people are sooo talented (which of course is the result of serious hard work).... but makes it look effortless...

This is magnificent! Thanks so much for sharing it!
I can’t believe it’s taken this track to remind me, but you should check out some Rodrigo y Gabriella when you have time.
They do some superb things with a pair of classical acoustic guitars!
Incredible player! Just gorgeous!
This is f--kin' amazing 👏👏👏👏👐 (Check out Mikes cover of a Metallica song 'One' )
R.I.P Eddie Van Halen ♥
Thanks so much for sharing this video. Wonderful guitarist. Eddie helped make the electric guitar a virtuoso instrument.
Brilliant arrangement. Aside from the revolution that he created, as well as Hendrix did in his time, I haven't seen any guitar player having so much fun as Eddie did. I'll always remember him just as a child playing with his favourite toy.
Mantab Mister.
