How To Change Your Oil Without Any Tools...Probably!

  • The Fumoto Valve replaces your engine's oil drain plug. It provides an easy and convenient way to drain your oils without using a wrench. No more worries about replacing the gasket, over-torquing, cross-threading, or leaking. Just install it once and never remove it again. They also make it easy to collect samples for use oil analysis, if you're a nerd like me. They are available for most any engine, and they cost about $20 on the Amazon.
If you over torque your oil filter like me, you might still need an oil filter wrench to remove it. I've got Fumoto valves on my Powerstroke, Duramax, Cummins, and Jeep. Never has any issues or leaks.

While I was an industrial vehicle mechanic for 13 years, an old-timer taught me to lubricate the filter gasket when filling it with oil, put it on as tight as you can with one hand, then back off just a scooch. Worked every time! Never had one so much as leak a drop over the 100 engine hour interval between oil changes in very cramped, hot engine bays. Although still tight, it always came off by hand. Every. Single. Time.

Place the screwdriver so it’s perpendicular to the surface of the filter, pound it through with a hammer, and turn it to the left to knock it loose.
