      The scene where they walk through the drainage ditch right there near the building was preceded by a scene with a building in the background that is nowhere around there. So, apparently there were two different cuts of the same scene with the same dialogue and they stitched them together. If you watch the movie it's when Tom is running toward them. The building right behind him is a large building. They start talking with the building in the background. Yet, when they get to the drainage ditch, they conversation continues as if uninterrupted, but that was two different locations. The drainage ditch was right there, but the tall building was somewhere else, either in Austin or Dallas. It makes me wonder if they originally cut the whole scene at the other location but later decided they wanted to do the drainage ditch scene and reshot part of it there.

    Very nice video! I worked on the film, so it was fun to see all those locations again. Peter's apartment was built as a set, the production designer used the basic look of the apartments in the complex as a jumping off point, and it was located in the back of the office complex where we shot the Initech scenes. The rear of the office set was the conference room where the two Bobs hold their interviews; on the other side of the wall there was a big open space, the drop ceiling cleared out for maximum height and the apartment set was built there, which included a little recreation of the stairway landing and railing glimpsed outside the door when Peter enters.

    This movie was almost an exact portrayal of my life at the time. In 1999 I lived in Las Colinas and worked as a programmer a few blocks away. The grassy canals were there and tgi-fridays nearby. My apartment had thin walls and I worked with other young men like Bolton and Samir. I also strangely began questioning life and one day left the job and never went back not giving notice.

      lol my dad lived in Irving nearby Las Colinas and was also a programmer, though in the early 90's, like 92 or 93 I think. I really thought this movie was shot in Las Colinas because of how similar everything looked to that region of DFW, so I was actually surprised to learn today that it was filmed in Austin.

      I feel ya, man. I related to plenty of things in it. My office digs were nicer than what you see in the movie (not many cubicles), but I could relate to the dreariness. I was a programmer at a small IT firm. For me, it was because of a dysfunctional work environment. Stuff would happen that didn't make sense, and we were just putting up with it. I reached a point where I quit, and it felt so liberating. I felt like Peter, where he just didn't care. The way Peter felt about Lundberg reminded me of how I felt about my boss, though he was not as casual and low-key. Peter's apartment living felt a little familiar. The comedy with that was funny as hell.
      The part I couldn't relate to at all was the angst, wanting to beat up office equipment, steal money, burn the place down. I just had to move on.
      The movie came out the year I quit. So, it was timed perfectly.

    I worked in that office building for a few years starting in 2000 as an exec assistant. I saw 9/11 go down from a conference room in that building.
    The movie had just been filmed there apparently and the staff that was there at the time was thrilled. Many had a copy of the movie at their desks.
    I, for some reason, didn't really watch the movie until I left working there. I regret that now! It's one of my favorites. It's so funny to see them walking around the office and recognizing areas.

      I thought the same thing. I'm pretty sure I was fooled by a highway sign that says "Dallas" during the opening traffic jam. It must be a sign for a highway going to Dallas from Austin but I thought it meant they were on the outskirts of Dallas.
      I didn't know Texas well enough to know where Las Colinas was. But Lawrence does complain that he has to get up at 4:00am and "drive my ass up to Las Colinas every day this week". Google maps says it's about 3 hrs. So with that bad traffic he's probably on site by 7:30 or 8 which seems reasonable for a commercial drywall guy.

I didn't design the 646, that stapler was designed in the 1960s, but I don't know who did it. My manager was one of the people who signed off on it. A year after it hit the theaters I was working in Houston for a computer company and living in a generic apartment like Peter's. I later ran into Gary Cole at a Ralph’s - and couldn’t remember the name of the film. I told him that the film… where he would speak with the coffee cup in his hand… he was a great in. "I don't really like talking about my flair". Smart writing. Don't just give the audience one boss to hate, throw in another little Napoleonic weasel. Great movie and one of the best examples that there is some truth in all humor. In this movie, a lot of truth.

    Fun fact, completely unrelated to the movie: if a manmade depression meant to hold water does NOT normally have water in it, and is usually empty except after storms, it's a DEtention pond. A REtention pond normally has water whether or not it rained recently, and is rarely empty.

    Only location I can think of that you left out was North Dallas (I-635 at North Dallas Tollway), where the big wide shots of the opening traffic scene was filmed (before it cuts to closer shots of Peter with the old man scooting the walker). You can see the Galleria Dallas shopping mall and other familiar buildings in the background in those shots.

    I've always wondered why the whole video was filmed in the Austin area but the very opening scene when they showed all the traffic before they actually showed the guys in the cars, was filmed on 635 in Dallas. Wonder if they had that stock footage or footage from something else and just used it vs filming a hwy in Austin.

    • @chupap1
      @chupap1 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I worked on the movie, so I can answer that! We shot mostly in Austin but also a few days in Dallas (and the final scene with Milton in the Florida Keys). When the guys are walking back from Chotchkies and Tom Smykowski runs to meet them, that's a shot we did in Dallas (the one just before the shot where they go through the retention pond as seen in this video). I was sent to shoot the traffic jam that opens the movie with a small crew. At the time there weren't any similar highways in Austin that had buildings along it with the right look.

    The very first shot of the opening (just after the "Twentieth Century Fox" card) is in Dallas. LBJ (635) to the west of Dallas North Tollway looking east. It shifts cropping in time with the music, but the Galleria is to the north (left). The silvery office to the right has changed owners and tenants many times since the movie, but the Galleria is still the Galleria. After this the opening moves to Austin.
