- Elina Garanca, Jonas Kaufmann, Anna Netrebko, Sonya Yoncheva, Nina Stemme, Andreas Schager & Piotr Beczala Lead Wiener Staatsoper’s 2022-23 Season. The Wiener Staatsoper has announced its 2022-23 season featuring six new productions, all of which are themed around Mahler.
Premieres:
“Von Der Liebe Tod” which includes Mahler’s “Kindertotenlieder” and “Das klagende Lied”
Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger Von Nurnberg”
Strauss’ “Salome”
Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro”
Monteverdi’s “Il Ritorno di Ulisse.”
Poulenc’s “Dialogues de Carmelites.”
Revivals:
Halevy’s “La Juive” with Roberto Alagna, Sonya Yoncheva, Nina Minasyan, Günther Groissböck…
Bizet´s “Carmen” with Elina Garanca, Piotr Beczala…
Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” will star Günther Groissböck, Pavel Petrov ..
Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” will be presented with two casts.
Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia”
Verdi’s “Rigoletto” with Benjamin Bernheim, Simon Keenlyside, Erin Morley..
Asmik Grigorian sings the title role of Janáček’s “Jenůfa” alongside a cast starring David Butt Philip, Michael Laurenz, and Violeta Urmana

Christina Bock, Eric Cutler, Thomas Ebenstein, Caroline Wettergreen, and Camilla Nylund star in Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos.” Thomas Guggeis conducts
Giampaolo Bisanti conducts Verdi’s “Macbeth” with Simon Keenlyside, Riccardo Fassi, Anna Pirozzi, and Freddie De Tommaso.

Jonas Kaufmann sings the title role in Giordano’s “Andrea Chénier.” Carlos Álvarez and Maria Agresta also star.
Krassimira Stoyanova, Günther Groissböck, Kate Lindsey, Adrian Eröd, Vera-Lotte Boecker, and Juan Diego Flórez perform in Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier” with Philippe Jordan conducting.

J. Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” rings in the New Year
Violeta Urmana, Nina Stemme, Simone Schneider, Jörg Schneider, and Christof Fischesser star in Strauss’“Elektra.” Simone Young conducts.
Elīna Garanča, Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, Alexander Vinogradov, and Luca Salsi star in Verdi’s “Aida.” Nicola Luisotti conducts.

The Wiener Staatsoper will present “Die Zauberflöte fur Kinder”
Philippe Jordan conducts a revival of Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” with Andreas Schager, Christof Fischesser, Nina Stemme, Iain Paterson, and Christa Mayer.

Shostakovich’ “Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk” will star Günther Groissböck, Andrei Popov, Ausrine Stundyte, Dmitry Golovnin, and Maria Barakova. Alexander Soddy conducts.
Asmik Grigorian makes history starring in both “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci.”
Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” will star Sonya Yoncheva, Isabel Signoret, Charles Castronovo, and Boris Pinkhasovich. Antonello Manacorda conducts.
Eric Owens leads Wagner’s “Das Rheingold” with Michael Laurenz, Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, Noa Beinart, Michael Nagy, Matthäus Schmidlechner, Stephano Park, and Ain Anger. Franz Welser-Möst conducts.
Giorgio Berrugi, Eric Owens, Tamara Wilson, Ricarda Merbeth, and Tanja Ariane Baumgartner lead Wagner’s “Die Walküre.” Franz Welser-Möst conducts.
Wagner’s “Siegfried” will star Klaus Florian Vogt, Ricarda Merbeth, Eric Owens, Michael Nagy, Noa Beinart, Matthäus Schmidlechner, Ain Anger, and Maria Nazarova. Franz Welser-Möst conducts.
Burkhard Fritz, Clemens Unterreiner, Dmitry Belosselskiy, Michael Nagy, Ricarda Merbeth, Regine Hangler, and Monika Bohinec star in Wagner’s “Götterdämmerung.” Franz Welser-Möst conducts.
Solo Concerts
The season will also see solo concerts from Ludovic Tezier, Juan Diego Flórez, Pretty Yende, Florian Bosch, Piotr Beczala, Andreas Schager and Nina Stemme.

amazing; could stay the whole season in Vienna
Beautiful productions
In Vienna everybody can go to the Opera for just 4 Euros. At the ground floor you have the same experience like the person next to you in a box with a 300 Euro Ticket. You only have to stand but again for only 4 Euros you watch the best opera singers in the world within one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world.
I visited Tosca and stood 2.5 hours in the ticket queue and another 3 hours on a standing place but it was nevertheless a great experience

Ohhhhh! I am so ENVIOUS! I am not keen on some of the costumes and sets - updates rarely work for me - but the repertoire breadth and scope is staggering!

The Vienna house is my favorite opera venue and I have wonderful memories of a number of productions. Even if all the casting would not be my choice the house the orchestra and of course being in Vienna............A city I would have liked to live there.

Except Willis-Sorensen and Enchbat there are no even decent singers. Vocal disaster. Obviously the next WSO season will be only for tourists.
Konieczny, Zeppenfeld, Grigorian and Stemme are all great singers.

So many boring modern productions… I wouldn’t pay an euro to watch so horrible settings with not even good singers… definitely only going to Wiener Philarmoniker Neujahrskonzert this season.
