A lot of singers do this. It helps them to ensure the voice is placed well in the "mask", the cavities which resonate around the nasal passages and cheek bones.

It's actually more common than you think, I see it all the time in rehearsals. There's a recording of Alagna singing Che Gelida Manina where he does something similar
He should keep his OTELLO in the studio for the moment. Then maybe he might still have a voice in 10 to 15 years. To begin with Kaufmann‘s beautiful instrument seems to be, at the heaviest, a lyric/spinto . OTELLO, on stage anyway, demands a dramatic tenor who can manage certain lyric passages in the score effectively. Domingo came close & his musicality & technique allowed success in this role. But artists like Vickers & McCracken were able to combine the lyric & dramatic qualities in an even more memorable manner. Both had not, what many would regard as more CONVENTIONALLY beautiful instruments. Del Monaco & Bonisolli had the power especially in the upper part of their voices but lacked the vocal subtlety & dramatic insight to be truly great OTELLOs. One should not recall Ramon VInay in this role, who for from the late 1940‘s to the mid 1950‘s, really made this role his own. He, being basically a baritone, with some upper extension, also did not always surmount the vocal difficulties of the role but at his best was always musically & dramatically quite powerful. Earlier exponents like Tamagno, Merli, & Zanelli were effective as well. As for Martinelli, well, he was not really a bonafide dramatic tenor but made a significant contribution despite the fact that he probably should have taken the role on perhaps 10 years prior to when he first performed it. All these opinions are in a large way subjective on my part & are hardly the final word concerning this role. I still have a more singers to hear in this role but I will say this. I regret the fact that Corelli never sang the role complete but have NO regrets that, perhaps my favorite tenor of all, Jussi Bjorling also was unable to realize his wish to sing this role even in the studio. In the studio he could have managed it but, for me, his timbre would have negated his efforts. His particular timbre also limited even some of his work as MANRICO, RADAMES, & CALIPH (Turandot).
I used to love Kauffmann. Now I find his voice lacking core and his having to work so hard. After i listened to di Stephano, I find Kauffmann lacking. He is also too aware of the camera all the time.
Both voices are wrong for the role ,anyone can sound good when recording with a good sound man , In the house live it's all wrong ! Jonas is not a dramatic tenor . He must be very delusional like most Operatic singers of the day ! Listening to him speak is so sicking with all the BS !

Some singers think it helps them 'hear' themselves better. Then again, it may be a nervous tic.
A lot of singers do this. It helps them to ensure the voice is placed well in the "mask", the cavities which resonate around the nasal passages and cheek bones.
And in addition it help to not squeeze the jaw and the throat
