Cheadles' Cantonese was great for an actor, and that's all. He most certainly DID just memorize the lines. Yeah, his Cantonese is better than pretty much every other Hollywood actor trying to speak a foreign language, but he does not know the language AT ALL. The first time, where he says, "no problem, no problem, continue" as he left the room, was okay. The way he pronounced "continue" in particular, had a pronounced western accent. The part where he says "Master Ching taught me", and "Crenshaw's Freddy Ching", was outstanding, near flawless. Did a great job of doing the accent Chinese have when they say english words whilst speaking Chinese (the way he says "Freddy Ching". He also at the end of each line, added an extra "ka" and "ah"respectively, which was a really spot on Cantonese mannerism. He does that in the following two lines as well. A+ marks here, great delivery. In "Why are you with 7-11?" The line starts and ends flawlessly, but Cheadle's pronounciation of the word "with" was quite off. He says it with an OH sound but it is pronounced with more of a ooo sound (less tong more tung). Hard to describe, as there is no equivalent english sound. Overall, good but with only a slight hitch. The last line, "his mouth doesn't know how to close" was pretty bad and out of place compared to the rest. In the line, he uses a word after mouth, meaning place. The more literal translation is, " His mouth (place) does not know how to close door". The way he said the "place" word was completely butched, and frankly kind of a let down. Really threw off the whole line off. Pronunciation of the word "close" was also not great. Not sure why they didn't choose to correct that. Overall, Cheadle did a great job, delivered his lines well, especially with those spot on Cantonese speech mannerisms. My family loves his movie, and this has always been our favorite scene. To this day, I still like saying that, "no problem, no problem, continue" around my family and friends. Hope y'all might have learned a little about Cantonese. I know Mandarin is the more "useful" and popular dialect, but they are still many Cantonese speakers all over the world!
