Have seen Doyle live three times. We chatted for a bit as well. He is the most humble, sincere and sweetest human I've ever met. The finest guitarist in the world some might also say. If you doubt, listen to his cds. He is equally a monster on the electric! Just heavenly.
Well, I've finally figured it out. All ten of Doyle's digits know and love each other. They enjoy making music together. Thus the AMAZING TALENT. I reckon I'll have to reintroduce all my fangers to each other and ask'em cain't they try to git along better. (I made'em all watch this video 3 times.) But, It ain't soakin' in......
Hi Doyle , you are now , by far , my favourite guitar player , tonal quality , feel , inspirational , so glad to have recently discovered your playing , Thank you You Tube .
At 1:30, did he just make a tuning adjustment while the middle of playing? I've been playing for 40 years - that my friends, it on a whole other level of ability right there. Wow. Such a beautiful song. I've watched some other version of this done on the electric, but just something about how wonderful this sounds on an acoustic. 👍
Im a guitarist, self taught and have heard many guitarists, alot of good ones, alot of great ones but and I can honestly say Doyle Doykes is one of the worlds best guitar players,he's very versatile and that's what makes him stand out.
I've been blessed to attend Doyle's workshops and concerts many times and have had opportunity to speak with him. He's the real deal as a musician (duh!), witness, father and all-around fine human being. Oh, and he either makes me want to try harder or sell my guitars. Not sure which!
OMG! Love Mr Dykes' work, but THIS is one of the most beautiful deliveries I have ever witnessed ... amazing arrangement and of course mind-boggling execution on my favorite Christmas tune ... just awesome! Merry Christmas to all and to all good life!
Doyle posted at his Facebook page after a request by SUZIE LOWE-SANTOS: "You need to do 'Drummer boy'! I was not a fan of that song until I heard your version!! Mark can do it, but yours is beautiful! 💙" [Just had to agree with Suzie that] "Mr. Dykes' positively 'orchestral' arrangement takes your breath away. A song my musical father hated (I think mainly for the repetitive 'bah-ruppa-bum-bum' lyric); but as a gifted pianist Dad would have appreciated what majesty Doyle Dykes brings to his rendition. Somewhere there is a perfectly recorded version of Doyle performing it on his Kirk Sand nylon-string (the best ever made) -- sponsored by a mic manufacturer (LR Baggs). Deepest thanks for sharing the link to this breathtakingly beautiful performance!"
maybe its the humble lack of pretense-(like chet) that makes it magical. He's an extraordinary talent and does not act like one. once in a lifetime you see this level of play. he is the best .
Amazing arrangement of one of my favorite Christmas songs. Doyle is such a master at this style of guitar. I first saw him at a MAMM show in Nashville in the 90's. Had not a clue who he was then. But now one of my favorites!
There a warmth to the sound of this guitar and music matched only by the personality of Doyle himself!! Absolutely beautiful rendition, love the harmonics intertwined with the song. Also, if you listen closely, it sounds more like an organ or piano song than a guitar song. Very fine work by Doyle!! Merry Christmas!!
It's a "Kirk Sand" made in California -- finest nylon-string classical acoustic-electric ever made. Who else says so? Chet Atkins. Jerry Reed. You get the idea. But Kirk would agree no one ever played one of his instruments more beautifully! Doyle, we are two guitar players (well my husband is & I try), in Ooltewah! Hubby plays some mean MS Delta Blues, & I play hymn arr. of my own, prior to that played Classical, folk, a little jazz, you know, a little blues (rhythm), country, accompaniment style, & solo guitar, but need help, rusty chops! You have any tips or tutorials to recommend for Little Drummer Boy in open G (G, B, D, G, B, D, 6th to 1st string tuning)? I like your slack D arr also! You are amazing! Doyle, we missed you at Brewer's Guitar Studio recently, in 09/15, nobody told us, & we know Sonny Thomas & a few others! But if we'd known we'd a been thar' with our guitars & everything!!! I used to teach at Bayside Bapt Church school, in Harrison, TN. for 14 yrs, Retired & now I'm teaching ME!!!! We think your playing is clearly anointed by our Lord Jesus!!! Wish I could get on mailing list, I'll check around for your website & stuff. 😎 our love brother!Abbie & Greg Byrom Classigal1@yahoo.com 523-580-0515
DOYLE DYKES - Little Drummer Boy My musical father (a composer and very good pianist) shared my early appreciation of Chet Atkins recordings - of 'standards' like Irving (God Bless America) Berlin's YOU'RE JUST IN LOVE - a song that required 'Mr. Guitar' to play two melodies simultaneously. Just imagined my Dad appreciating this one: the best-ever solo guitar rendition of LITTLE DRUMMER BOY. A song my father actually hated for its repetitive 'ba-ruppa, bum-bum' lyric. But I'm certain he would have loved this instrumental by Doyle Dykes. Not least for the arresting snare drum effect that Mr. Dykes elicits from this, one of his two favorite guitars - a 'Kirk Sand' nylon-stringed instrument - the “best ever made” according to all the finger-style giants who've owned them. I see my namesake already reviewed this one “2 years ago” at TH-cam. th-cam.com/video/de06TkAnr8g/w-d-xo.html Thanks for sharing LR BAGGS. Celebrated this day (12/6/2023) at search " Great Melody, Great Lyric, Great Rendition "
I'm prepping for my Christmas gigs now and I found a great arrangement or so I thought until I saw this. I noticed you tuned to Drop D then used D as a pedal point, I really wish you had the arrangement online for sale or something this looks playable for sure and very beautiful
Ken EagleBear hey thanks for the offer man. I actually ended up learning a classical version for the classical guitar and it turned out really cool. Thanks though man
Hey if you happen to see this, and still have this arranged or tabbed out, I would love to see it! There are several parts I just cant seem to get by ear! Thanks!

Beautifully played thank you brother Doyle
I wish I had words that can match that gift 🎁you shared.
Thank you.
I've watched this 100's of times and it keeps getting better.
My favorite... thank you!
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how it's done.
The song could be titled Little Guitar Boy. What a wonderful job of a song I've loved for a very long time. Jesus has been glorified!
I'm sure there are easily over a hundred versions of this song, but this is certainly one of the best versions I've heard.
Never heard a better rendition of this lovely tune than this! Absolutely wonderful!
I stood up and applauded him when he finished.
Wonderful, reminds me of my Sister, she loved this song bless her, ❤ Beautifully played.
Love that tone.
That guitar...what a brilliant & glorious sound! And in Doyle's expert hands caressing every note... it is pure heaven!
One of my favorites of Doyle's Christmas songs. Lovely. I am wild about the simulated snare drum segment as it adds a lot to the song! Thanks for all!
Gawd that is BEAUTIFUL
Speechless 😳🔥
I met Doyle 20 years ago and had the pleasure of speaking with him. He gave me a free cd and was just an all around great guy.
He does this song right...my favorite Christmas song and this version is definitely in the Top 5.
This guy is amazing. I'm stunned.
Extremely impressive!! Absolutely love it!

Note: I had a Silvertone amp and cabinet back in 1967 as a kid. That amp sure looks similar - the knobs and all. ?
Well, I've finally figured it out. All ten of Doyle's digits know and love each other. They enjoy making music together. Thus the AMAZING TALENT.

Heard him do this in Philadelphia, Calvary Chapel. Fantastic
Doyle is a true maestro of the guitar and is good as Chet ever was......

Awesome what a rendition love the percussive snare drum just awesome 😁👍👏👏👏👏

Likewise. But I have come to accept any yearly improvement as a blessing from the Lord and to be content with that!! LOL!
Magnificent and moving performance!

IT's a great performance, wow...
Awesome
The idea of crossing the strings to make it sound like a snare is inspired

Do you still have the Sands guitar? Beautiful but the Godin has some similarities. Kirk did it first! Baggs, very very nice. Come to Colorado!
Wow
Originally you could find these LR Baggs electronics (or their predecessors) in Godin guitars.
Jerry Reed played them for instance...
Just look at the SECOND guitar is this video:

They don't have the abalone of the Kirk Sand, but they're technically GOOD.
Doyle is as good or better than Roy Clark or Glen Campbell and I only just discovered this astounding guitarist.
Does anybody know what guitar Doyle is playing in this video? I'm assuming it's a Godin, but I don't see this model anywhere on the net, with the abalone binding and fret inlays at the top of the fingerboard.
That is a SAND guitar, made by Kirk Sand, Laguna Beach, Ca.
Can we get the sheets somewhere?
Is there a guitar tab for Doyle Dkyes version of Little Drummer Boy ?
I didn't know Ron White played the guitar.
WOW is right!! Would love to have the tab or sheet music. Anybody ??????
same here 😹
I would like to know how you tuned your guitar
