I got myself a Tamiya Holiday Buggy fitted with the GT Tuned 540 motor. I bought my brother the grasshopper with the same motor. When he gets round to building it we’re going to have a head to head race (reliving our youth at 40, based on the cars we had back in the early 90s).
It’s the front ribbed tyres causing the lack of steering issue, pop some spikes on.
Don;t let anyone say i have not warned you. I raced them for years. Buy a Schumacher and you will regret it. My advice is buy something that works well with easy parts supply where you live. It's very hard to get parts for them and The Top Cat is a flawed fragile design. You can see the company went more conventional on the next version. Trust me as well as they perform a Top Cat is an accident waiting ti happen and hard to get parts for.

Nice snap shot of how quickly 1/10 RC cars changed in the 80's. The 1983 Tomahawk with its scale looks and the other end of the time line the 1988 Top cat built to race and nothing like a real car . I was amazed how close they all were in terms of time. Get the RERE RC10 up and running and use that as the bench mark for 2WD runs.
Agreed. The Tomahawk looks like a real car. The other two look like an RC car designed to go round a track fast.
These remind me a lot of the Lobo that Sears sold when I was a kid but they ran on 8 AA batteries. I really like how things have improved with the cars now.

Awe YEA!!! The Fox was my first hobby grade RC. It was fun to build with my dad and race at the track with my friends. You are correct, the steering was not the best, but I to think a better servo would have helped alot. I miss that buggy!!!

I will be swapping out the cones for 100m 5cm rope as the next track upgrade. It’s a little expensive and budgets are tight for a while but soon I hope.

god damn, i literally had the exact issue with my tomahawk lol, first time running in the snow, worked for 5 minutes then had that issue, went thru whole thing even retorqing the face of the diff lol. Good video! sorry im late to the show
Great video that mate, loved it and look forward to seeing some more like this. Would be good to get the slowest and see if you can mod it to match the fastest etc for another video. Think the front tyres will have big part to play on the turning too. Imo

My first 4wd buggy was a well used and abused ProCat back in 1992...can't remember how much i paid for it but what a great little machine it was.

Great video, will be interesting to see how all the other classics compare. I'd love to see the CAT XLS and CAT K1 Aero times. I see several comments suggesting that all cars should run the same motor etc. I can see where they are coming from but in a way this doesn't really create a much fairer comparison because the strength of some cars over others will be that they have the drivetrain and handling abilities that can take the more powerful motors. Nobody watches Top Gear and says hang on a minute, you need to put an Astra VXR engine into all the supercars to make it fair :)

Astute, Super Astute, Top Cat, Frog, Madcap, Falcon, Hornet, RC10, Dyna and RC10 Graphite will all get a go.
That was a good shootout, for some reason I kept thinking I would like to see the Super Astute battle the Top Cat . Hopefully you use Top Force in the 4wd shootout. That motor must have really gotten hot to burn up like that . That always makes me nervous when I run my old buggies. Great video Gavin.

This comparison should have been Tamiya Astute vs Kyosho Ultima vs Schumacher Top Cat.
They're a similar pedigree of cars with double wishbone suspension and shocks on each corner, chuck in the same motor and gearing, as well as having a control tyre.

It may be slower but the Kyosho tomahawk looks the best.
It’s a lovely looking buggy for sure.
The Schumacher looks really good. It’s interesting how wide the front arms and stance is, even compared to the back of the buggy. I love all of them but the blue looks great on that buggy.
Yep the Top Cat front track is really wide.
The fox's front end was very weak. Heavy impacts with track barriers always filled the indoor track building with a loud "crack" sound and parts would be seen flying into the air back when I raced in the 80's. Someone would always show up with a Fox and leave with a broken Fox.
Loved the video, great shoot out. I think if you added the RC10 to the mix it would be an excellent 2wd match to this shoot out.

Ah tires slipping in the wheels. I had this problem in July with my Madcap restore. Couldn't figure it out. Rebuilt the diff. Then I had the ah-ha moment and noticed the tires slipping :)
The Novafox is the best looking tho! Gotta be a top 5 best looking Tamiya buggy.........well it's in my top 5

How about the "Back-Track"? Simple, descriptive, catchy, and fun to say.
Ahwwww we need a rematch with similar Tires/Motor/Servo/Speedo.... well at least i guess that is what would be nice for the next comparison, this time topcat clear winner so it can go against the next 2 2wd that you come up to race with in next spring. It would be great to always have 3 cars in race and then carry the best one over to the next race of that class, Taking 2WD 4WD and Monster classes. You only need to train your daughter and wife so you have 3 drivers....

to make the comparison significable you should have put the same motor in each car
Like the video but lol wasn’t fair. The Fox has a 19T but the top cat had a 15t there is quiet a bit difference in that. Not to mention pinion size etc. not sure if you use the same battery because those turnigy are dang good and have an incredible discharge rate. Be neat to see them with all the exact same electronic and all just stock.
If I ever get a real track I would match them up but around the garden, no point really and it’s just for entertainment and fun. The track is so tight it’s more about turning rates than power.
Rc10 vs jrx pro vs traxas talon vs top cat vs ultima pro all the big doge of the day would be awesome

Good lord look at how wide the Top Cat is compared to the other two!
Tires makes a huge difference, the Schumacher definitely has the best tires. I bet if you got the same tires on all three cars, they will be very close in lap time.
Love the idea but not really a fair comparison. Really wanted to see either stock challenges ie standard electrics. Or all the same so running the same servo same esc radio gear and motor that would show whats best. Not that we don't know already.

This would have been a great video if you'd used the same motor, esc, servo and battery in each of them for a fair comparison, but a fun video nevertheless.
The plan is if this video is popular, I will tweak each car to get it as fast as possible on the track, then fit one standard motor in each car and see what chassis is the fastest under the same power. If this video flops then I won't invest all that effort and time.

I agree. The same setup should be used in each car. You would have a more fair assessment. We do that for our race night videos. Each race class runs the same turn brushed motor, esc and battery. The only difference is the pinion. Keeps things on a level playing field for our races. Looking forward to more vids like this.

Just like I said in the first post, Nova fox is junk and schumacher is better. Kyosho looks even worse than the nova fox
Junk? Junk with what meter? You can tell it by yourself with own words.
@@GTMatukka Tamiya isn't the bar when it comes to racing RC. They make highly detailed RC models, that is all. Also, that front suspension on the nova fox is so bad it's not seen anywhere else other than the nova fox and boomerang. Look, I love Tamiya and own a boomerang and a blackfoot (both in the box) and I think Tamiya makes really cool RC models, but competition isn't their focus.

Hotshot has a monoshock. I can tell you, read stuff before making any statements. Tamiya Racing Factory, TRF.. Google it.

Google how many times TRF has won any championship in the past 40 years. I think maybe twice. Why do bitter? I like Tamiya a lot, they're just not competition designed RCs.
