Just another THANKS for your series. I’m here for my third watch on this video alone 😝 Just about to START my Tomahawk build and meanwhile ready to buy another one or two of the re-releases to marinate 😆
Thanks for the kind words. 😊 I’ve received so much positive feedback from viewers on my Legendary Series videos. I’m happy to know they are proving useful. There have been several new releases since that video was made so I will need to make an updated version at some point. 😁
@ The pleasure is mine! Ever since I stumbled upon your Complete Guide to the Legendary Series I’ve progressively gotten more and more…. Well frankly OBSESSED with buggies and kyosho. I’ve always loved buggies since my childhood Team Losi XX. Since subscribing to Kai City I’ve got an Optima Gold, finishing up a BBX currently and have a Tomahawk next in line! 😝 Thanks for the inspiration and detailed content to help me get educated and confident for my current and future builds!
Oh, wow! That is a lot of upgrades! Looking forward to see it, and of course, knowing you, I'm sure you will do a comparison video with the stock version. I do like those "going all in", unlimited upgrade projects, they do feel great to do. And of course that final explanation nails it, it's cool you put your TH-cam revenue back into the cahnnel content. I think you have already established yourself as a good source for info on these old Kyoshos, so I think it is only fitting you also feature all the upgrades. Great idea! And of course, have a nice time at the races!
Thank you! I do indeed plan to do a comparison with the stock Tomahawk. 😊 As the build isn't going in the direction I initially planned, it will be an interesting comparison. Stay tuned!
Hello David. I can relate to your pain. I just bought another scorpion kit today. My second. Those cars are things of beauty and we all know there will be a time when they will stop making them. There are very special. Made by kyosho and just so lucky the original designer is in charge of the re releases, 40 odd years later. Unique. Like if some of the Italian legendary cars of the 60s were still made by ferrari. Oh we are lucky in the RC world!
Thanks! I managed to get some done today, though regretfully not been able to film any of it. So far no problems and it is all going together nicely. All the carbon does look good. 😎
Yes, the Turbo Scorpion is my favorite of the bunch, but there is something so "different" and appealing about the Tomahawk. After hitting a snag last night, I spent some time contemplating what direction I wanted to take the build and realized there are several distinguishing features of the Tomahawk I wanted to preserve. Sounds a bit cryptic, but once I've done the build all will be revealed. 😊
This is extremely helpful for me when I decide to upgrade my Beetle in the future! They way you explain the reasons why you chose each part is really informative so thank you for that! :D
Man what a haul! I am very interested in seeing this one all put together! You went all the way with the option parts which is pretty cool. You are very right about the weak excuses we come up with to justify a purchase! I think that we just need to slightest reason to get something new it sounds good in our head to to our significant others it is a load of bull but they know too! We are just big kids with adult money! LOL! I hop you get it all built and can take it with you to the event!!
Thanks! I ended up spending way more money on a single set of upgrades than I have ever done before. But any excuse to spend money eh! Luckily the better half is very understanding! 😁
I've done similar things with some kits. I have a Blackfoot that's been waiting to be built for over a year and an MF-01 Jimmy that's been waiting nearly two. But the longest I've left something sat in a box was my Monster Beetle. Took me five years to get around to building that! 😅
Thanks! I might try on the 2.2 Turbo Scorpion wheels and see how I like the look. To be honest though, one of the things I like about the stock wheels is how small they are! Very nostalgic. 😁
Thank you! In my haste to reply to comments while getting on with the Tomahawk build I completely missed that you mentioned you're also attending the Vintage Meet!! Great! 😊It would so nice to converse in English. 😁. You have a new sub. I like the look of your Tomahawk. I've been studying your videos as I noticed you fitted a rear wing using the Turbo Scorpion mount. I'm having issues with the Tomahawk body not clearing the HG shock stay at the rear. It will require some cutting to work properly. So I'm debating...to cut or not to cut. ✂️ 🤔
I also attach a shock stay for Turbo Scorpion to Tomahawk, but the shape and size are the same as for HG, so I cut the body a little. If you attach a wing, the impression will change drastically. It's a little like JJ. I'm looking forward to Saturday😊 I'm not very fluent in English😅but let's have fun talking about RC together.
Hyped for the build/ I didn't know there were carbon go fast parts for those models. Interested to see how it changes the appearance, and how the soft compound tyres improve things.
Thanks! 😊 In all honest, most of the carbon gets covered up by the body so you don't really see much of it, especially on the Tomahawk. In that regard, the carbon upgrades make most sense on the Turbo Scorpion as the shock towers are more visible with the body on. Regarding the tires, after building both Scorpions and the Beetle (a while ago) it appears I got confused as to what tires are supplied in the kit. The Tomahawk kit tires are most certainly the soft compound, so it must have been one of the others (I suspect the Scorpion) that came with the hard compound tires. Sorry for the error! 😅
Correction regarding the kit supplied front tires. It seems those included in the Tomahawk kit are soft. So it was either the Scorpion or Beetle kit tires that are a very hard compound. 😓 Update: The HG shocks require the HG shock stays front and rear. However, the rear shock stays interferes with the body and requires (what looks to be) quite a bit of cutting to get it to sit properly. At this point, I'm tempted to fit the standard shocks and keep the HG shocks + stays for my Turbo Scorpion.
Yeah, I have the Beetle, and those front tyres are just annoying! (actually I hate the front of that buggy altogether, so I'm happy it usually keeps the front in the air mostly, ha ha) I might look into those other tyres, good thing you showed these...
You was struck by FoMO ( fear of missing out ) as the kids will say 😅 but hey, it’s a lovely kit and you do a great job with them so why not. I hope Kyosho continue to do the legendary series as it’d be a shame to lose the range, heck even if they took it to a pre order and batch built only would be better than they’re gone now 😫 Look forward to seeing how this one turns out 👊
Over here, new stock tends to sell out quickly, so hopefully Kyosho will continue to produce the kits for years to come. Though just in case, I've been slowly stocking up on essential spares for the last few years. 😅
Interesting that another batch of the 2wd legendary series buggies is available in Japan. In the US the only 2wd available is the Ultima, opposite of Japan, and for preorder the JJ Ultima.
Thanks for the comment. The 2WD buggies have been out of stock for a while now, but came back into stock on the 27th of this month, along with the JJ Ultima. Kyosho recently ran off a batch of Turbo Optimas, but it has been a while since we've seen the Javelin and Optima.
Sadly, I don't think we're likely to see a nitro re-release from Kyosho. Which is a shame. I've not run any nitro RC's for over 15 years now, but I do miss some aspects of them (sounds and smell! 😁) but not others (engine tuning!)😅
Hi David, really looking forward to your new interpretation of the Tomahawk! You always add your personal touch and your builds are really fantastic. Here in Switzerland it is still quite easy to find it. It is however impossible (for the time being at least) to find a Javelin... I ordered one in April, but the seller continues to postpone the delivery date that is now unknown. Is it really that difficult to find one? How is its availability in Japan?
Thank you for commenting. The Javelin and Optima have been out of stock for nearly a year here and there is still no indication of when (or if) Kyosho will run off another batch. I've been keeping an eye out myself as I'm after another Javelin (I know, I have a problem! 😅 ). I plan to build it into a carpet spec machine to use at my local circuit. Hopefully Kyosho will do another release. They are currently displaying all of the Legendary series buggies, including the Javelin at the Tokyo Hobby show this weekend. So you would think they're unlikely to display kits they no longer plan to sell...
😂😂 it’s quite a nice problem though! Yes, let’s hope that the fact that they still display all their legendary series kits is a good sign. Fingers crossed! Have fun with your build
I built a Kyosho Scorpion. I did almost everything you are showing. I also bought the special hard aluminum parts too. I forget what those parts are called but they are a little bit yellow. I did get the same shocks you did for my Scorpion, they are much better. I have built and used the old Kyosho bottom loading shocks and they are okay but I much prefer the shocks you have. They just work better. Thoughts?
I personally haven't had any notable issues with any of the kit shocks fitted to my Kyosho re-releases. They work pretty well for what they are. The Turbo Scorpion's are slightly better (bigger bore and stroke) and Kyosho offered optional spring sets to fine tune the handling. That said, I don't know how well the kit shocks would do with frequent track use. They're a single o-ring design and would probably leak after repeated hard jumps. The HG shocks are much better design than the kit and normally they'd be the first upgrade I'd do. The option parts you're referring to are what Kyosho called their "HD" Metal parts. They're made from 7075 alloy, rather than the usual 6061 are much stronger and are pale gold in color. Most of them have been discontinued now unfortunately, though it is still possible to pick up a few. I have an (almost) complete set waiting to go on a future build. 🙂
@@KaiCityRC I like the Kyosho re-release kits they are great. My favorite is the Scorpion because I had one when I was younger. My Scorpion was a Cox/Kyosho Scorpion. Kyosho did not have a name in the USA back then so it sold under the Cox brand. I sold my original one a long time ago which why I wanted the re-release car. Yes, the aluminum parts I was taking about are much stronger. I did not know those parts have been discontinued. I also got the carbon parts for my scorpion too. Thanks for the info.
All those upgrades look awesome. Can’t wait to see the finished car! Do you think you might switch back to the metal motor mount plate for better heat dissipation compared to the carbon plate? Or is heat not generally a concern on this car?
Thanks for commenting. 😊 As far as I am aware, Kyosho does not offer a carbon replacement for the metal motor plate that attaches the motor to the gearbox. They did at one point offer a stronger CNC motor plate, but that has long been discontinued. I wonder if you meant the gearbox plate? It sits on the underside of the chassis and connects the metal gearbox case to the main chassis rails. The gearbox itself is all metal, compact and I don't think heat would be an issue even with more powerful motors.
The 490 will work in any of the Legendary Series buggies. In fact, despite being *only* a 30T motor, it has quite a good torque band and works well with the 6.9:1 gearing on the 2WD buggies. Looks good too! 👍

Great video. I have saved so I can refer back and put Turbo Scorpion wheels on my upcoming Tomahawk build.
