Uprising is a great song to just chill out to, but it's certainly not their best. Hysteria, Plug-in Baby, Stockholm Syndrome, and others are more emblematic of their style, or at least their older style. I honestly haven't listened to any albums past this one because it didn't grab me beyond a few songs, unlike Black Holes and Revelations or Origin of Symmetry, which I would 500% recommend.

Knights of Cydonia and Assassins would be my main picks from te Blackholes and Revelations album.
No, they're nothing like Arctic Monkeys. They're more prog and experimental, while Arctic Monkeys are a garage Punk band.
For Muse, think Queen mashed up with Pink Floyd and liberal helpings of electro pop.

Radiohead mate... Muse is Queen making out with Radiohead. Matthew has even mentioned this in his earlier interviews.
The classic upbringing he had as a Piano virtuoso helped shape the whole Queen side even more.

  • @rumasai
    @rumasai 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

One of my favorite touches to this song is that each chorus feels more powerful than the last, especially vocally. The first chorus is alone and almost sounds desperate. The second chorus sounds more confident and has backing vocals, making it feel like a movement has begun. By the final chorus, it sounds like he has an army backing him up. That's how I think on it anyway.

  • @brettg274

Muse is a band you need to see live if you’re able. I think it’s the closest you can get to seeing Queen perform at this point.
And as far as calling them “pop”, Muse always has one song on the album that is decidedly more pop than the rest to be the radio single. A lot of the deep tracks are much more musically impressive.

This was the single the blew Muse up into american mainstream success. They "dumbed" their sound down a bit for radioplay and it worked for them. They're without question one of, if not the best, arena rock bands of this generation. Huge bombastic shows with enormous stage production. Matt Belamy absolutely SHREDS live accompanied with insane vocals.

So for me you've got two distinct phases of Muse: before Black Holes and Revelations, when they were rockers, and rocked out, and after, when they got a bit more forward with really cutting in their non-rock influences (which did annoy a lot of their OG fans at the time, it has to be said). And BH&R sits neatly in the middle, with Knights of Cydonia blissfully epitomising the whole damn Muse show in one epic epic song.
So definitely do that, but I also feel like you should go for one from the pre-BH&R phase, specifically Plug In Baby because it's brilliant. Though I see people reccing Hysteria which slaps too.

Radiohead basically changed their entire style because Matt Bellamy (and others) copied what they were doing on OK Computer lol. That said, I really like Muse a lot & think Thom was being kind of a little bitch about similar sounding bands. Also, I feel like Radiohead's drastic style "evolution" is really just an elaborate inside joke / social experiment to see how far they could get away from their original sound & still keep fans with them. Turns out it's pretty far!

I bought 'Cave' on one of two numbered CD singles they released before they had a contract - the original version is less heavy (the Showbiz version has a slightly more 'Pumkins' guitar sound) - I'd've recommend 'Muscle Museum' too myself

BRO!!!!! I watched you guys almost 3 years ago and I just want to tell you that you were an inspiration to me! I wanted to make a reaction channel after seeing you all react to some of my favorite bands. I waited a year to get started and I have loved my journey since! So much so that I started a second channel reacting to metal with my girlfriend! I am so happy to see you guys are at 1.11MILLION!!! SUBSCRIBERS!!!! I seriously hope you make it to 10 Million! You guys deserve it! Love, Peace and Taco Grease!

This is one of their more straight forward songs but it is a great tune. From that same album, I would recommend Unnatural Selection to hear more of their prog and heavier influences. Also yes, Knights of Cydonia is a must.

Great review, guys! Agreed the lyrics are very thought-provoking and timely; it’s always good to stand up for our rights and not take them for granted.
Musically, they almost combine Depeche Mode or Radiohead-like synthesizers with good grooves and powerful lyrics.
Definitely do Knights of Cydonia by them next- it’s possible that the song inspired the TV show Westworld, and you’ll enjoy the musical journey!

Muse are quite inventive. Definitely a great art rock band. You noticed Matts lead vocals but their bassist does amazing harmonies too. They can bust out and just jam at times & show some chops, plus they utilise a variety of instruments (horns on ‘pressure’, synths/pedals on dozens of stuff etc). They used to be accused of being a Coldplay copy (early material), then it was a Queen copy now you just gotta give it to them - they’re a great band

  • @terptek1

I'd have Knights of Cydonia LIVE as a top choice, and then the 2013 (Brit Awards) LIVE version of Supremacy ("Supremacy live 2013") since Ryan and George will dig all the orchestral strings and trumpets ratcheting up the melody. Yes, Muse is best watched and listened to live. Third is a song that some might not cite here: Plug in Baby LIVE!

  • @NikkiDavis2767

Seconding everyone here about Knights of Cyndonia-especially the live version. Muse is like if Queen, Radiohead, and Pink Floyd had a baby… and that baby went to space and became a musical prodigy. That’s Muse. 😂

If ya guys ever do knights of cydonia, u can hear the guitar shout out Bellamy does to his dad. His dad was in a instrumental band the tornadoes(bristish of course) and their big song was telstar. @ghost mall You're ignorant. Must have only heard a few songs, on the radio. Muse are experimental & far more politically aware. Radiohead's frontman was an Iraq War proponent early on even. He's a fraud or idiot. Anti-revolutionary band. Normies are anti-revolutionaries. Hipsters who just follow when it really counts. Muse are an innovative band & revolutionary, like Pink Floyd. They don't promote malaise & unawareness like Radiohead or the Beatles.

Muse is a group that I slept on for long time, but returned to about 3-4 years ago, and I realized their music is a lot more intelligent from a music theory standpoint and in terms of composition than I originally thought.
One song that showcases their diversity (and one of my favorite tracks) is The Globalist. They really hit both ends of the rock spectrum on that one and I think you guys would dig it. Cheers!
