My wife and I are both in the IT software field. We use task based approaches like Agile and Kanban boards for chunking tasks. Our son has been extremely successful on projects that he’s used a Kanban board to chunk out work. I highly recommend looking at it as an approach as it works in software and our 2e son.

thanks for sharing this. I WISH schools had something adapted to kids to build these skills, a project management software tailored to the educational experience, and ways to TEACH teh skills!

I adore this idea! I wish our kids' teachers would use this method!! As a mom with ADHD, the school year always brings with it more emails/papers/notifications of upcoming events and reminders, than I can keep up with. Individual teacher contracts for 2 HS kids and 1 MS kid, as well as from our grade schooler's class.
I've had very few EF skills myself, so I've had NO method to tackle it all, and 50% of it falls to the wayside. Our kids don't tell us honestly what they have/have not finished, assignment-wise, and our two HS kids have suffered academically this year because of it- BIG TIME.
I am Dx with ADHD, our senior was Dx last summer, and our other 3 kids show possible ADHD traits- it seems my husband is the only one in the house who's definitely got stellar EF skills, and our chaotic household drives him crazy!
I was able to extract the principles taught in this video for use as a parent, also- though I'm not a teacher. We could work as a family to receive all manner of information from the teachers/schools, and create a Google Calendar for household use- that will be SOLELY for school assignments and announcements- color coded to keep track.
Each day, our kids can advise us of what's expected of them, and we can plug everything into the Calendar!! Awesome.

Great Work! Chunking Works: 1. Timer (Concretely Start for 3:03 3 minutes 3 seconds) 2. Task - Each Task - small chunks - Write out a concrete plan.
So good, no matter you have (accept) ADHD or not! Thanks!

Really enjoyed this! Enjoyed having executive function so clearly explained. I'm a retired teacher, now tutoring. I often used a timer with my students because it helped them see tasks as more manageable. I never used the word "chunking" because is used to describe something different in reading instruction, but in essence that is what I was using with my students. I also taught them to practice positive self talk...I guess that was my version of "tricking" themselves into self starting. Thank you for sharing these valuable insights. I'm definitely going to sign up for your blog!

Thank you so much for sharing. During the 2020 ADHD Women's Pallooza I heard some thing called executive function but didn't understand fully what it was. And for the ADHD TOOLBOX the subjects discussed is life changing. I'm 51 years young and understand why I thought my life didn't amounted to failure. I read some of the book: "You Mean I'm Not Lazy Crazy or Stupid?" Written by two women who have ADHD. I got frustrated with the book because I knew the symptoms well so what do I do now? I skipped to that section and found the Pallooza while it was streaming. I am forever greatfull for sharing your knowledge. Now I can work at being that entrepreneurs I always wanted make money and depend on NO ONE!

I found you channel today, and see that I had done exactly this (task breakdown and chunking) two days ago to help my child with a very complex and multi step project that they have to do. I even used the elephant analogy!!!! I feel awesome knowing how I have hacked my life is also one strategy you recommend!!! Thankyou for the external validation. My RSD just got put back in it’s box 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻

How would you suggest getting teachers to chunk things ? My son has an IEP with chunking as a specific accomodation (also timers)
He swears he never sees a timer, he also seems to get the exact same assignments as everyone else. So it's not really chunked despite the teachers saying it is.
    He's in 9th grade, he's a 2E.
