Had the same access issue so I cut round holes for the 10" store-bought plastic screw down hatches. their pretty cheap but easy to install and leaves you with a watertight but quickly accessible space. You might be able to find a square plastic hatch a little bigger than your hole and use one of them. Then you could even store stuff in there. Found my 22' day sailor abandoned by the Monocacy river, and my brother and I rebuilt her into a multipurpose weekender. Dropping in at Kent narrows for a week up the Wye in Sept. Have fun with that thing!
