For me, this song once again demonstrates the genius of Tuomas, in musically expressing feelings (in this case negative). Negative feelings, but you really feel them. And at the end, when all their instruments (except the drums) give way to the orchestra - it is again an expression of genius. An orchestral storm of feelings.

For that solo, Mr. Heretic. Was it Emppu? Was it Tuomas? The answer: Yes. :) Seriously, it was Emppu at the beginning, then Tuomas joined in playing the same thing, so it's more of a duo between them but synchronous, not harmonious, as you can clearly hear the punch of the guitar, but the glistening of the keys as they are played, so you are hearing both playing the same progression at the same time.
I'm glad you mentioned Marco's bass tone on this. This is the beefiest bass tone I have ever heard in a song and how prominent it was, and there's only two words to describe it: Warwick Vampire. The tone he has on it (and I can't tell if it is overdrive or not) is thick and prominent, but doesn't overtake everything else.
As everyone else has already said, this is Dark Passion Play, which was 2006-2007, so this would be Jukka on drums, but I believe was recorded before Anette was in the band (someone can correct me here if I'm wrong) as the singer. Oh, and for the chorus and background vocals? Welcome to the London Metro Voices Choir and London Session/London Phil. The staccato of the strings and brass of the horns are absolutely brutal on this track.
But as you can tell, this is Nightwish's heaviest song, and for good reason. As a bass player in a band we knew you'd like this one.

That ending.... It's like the most brutal Bond theme ever! :D
This song gives me shivers every time I listen to it. And I have listened it dozens and dozens of times. It is an evil, nasty b*tard of a song that has no regrets, no apologies. The song says what it has to say, brutally. It is no wonder they have never played this live. Though I wish they would. Even for just once. Needles to say, when I would be in the audience. ;)
Thrash metal by Nightwish. You think there is something they can't do? Think again. ;)
edit: Have to add, that the song is brutal, even if you just ignore the lyrics. The song itself is a nasty son of a b*ch. The adding of the lyrics is just like giving a gun to a guy that can beat you up just with his bare hands.

For me it's not a question of whether Marko's vocals are better on this or The Islander, it's that he can fit his vocals perfectly to such different songs that makes him so great! (much like Floor)
Was easy to know that you would dig this one - have a great time tomorrow night at the concert and hopefully Marko isn't too big a miss.

Yes, Dark Passion Play is the album it is on. The first album after Tarja, released in 2007. So, that's Jukka on drums.
He gave you the studio version because the song has never been played live, and never will be.
It's the only Nightwish song that includes profanity.

Given the subject matter, they really couldn't ask Anette to sing this. Plus, Marko needed the release! I just wish Marko's vocal is higher in the mix, bc when his voice soars...its special!
They do share vocals on the other FU song, Bye Bye Beautiful...and that's a serious banger!

In my personal opinion, the best job Marko did on vocals during Nightwish period was “Endlessness”, from the last album “Human Nature”, even though Dark passion play and Imaginaerum are my favourite ones by far. From those, you could do some very nice reacts:
    - Scaretale, from the album Imaginaerum. Is a song that has no chorus, it’s dark, very fun at the same time and brings Anette Olzon, the third vocalist that you never did a react yet if I’m not mistaken
    - Escapist, a B-side from “Dark passion Play”. Very good orchestral work on this one. Not the best song ever but there is some good material here.
    - Last ride of the day from Imaginaerum, fantastic song to end a nice Nightwish show.
    - Ghost River from Imaginaerum again, some interesting duets between Marko and Anette.
    Hope you like those!

Also, there are some nice bands with Nightwish players that maybe you could listen to:
    - Tarot and Northern Kings: Marko is the lead vocalist in the fist one and the second is like a supergroup between 4 vocalists, Marko from Nightwish, Tony Kakko from Sonata Arctica and 2 others that I actually don’t remember their names to be fair Hahahah
    - Brother Firetribe brings Emppu in a Hard Rock band, even though he’s not in the band anymore. there are some good songs here.
    - Alyson Avenue, Anette’s AOR band, she used to be the lead singer before started playing with Nightwish. I really, really like the first 2 albums.
    - Auri, a band formed with Tuomas, his wife Joanna Kurkella and Troy. Kinda Folk vibes
    - After Forever, the band where Floor became famous I think. Personally I don’t like it but so many people really loves it
And Tuomas also has an album called “Life and adventures of the Scrooge” that absolutely worth a listen

The other two guys in Northern Kings are Jarkko Ahola of Teräsbetoni and Juha-Pekka "JP" Leppäluoto from Charon and Harmaja.
Also, maybe come December (yeah, I know, filmed before December) Mr. and Mrs. Heretic might enjoy a few selections from Raskasta Joulua (Heavy Christmas) which I would call a project/collaboration of (mostly) Finnish metal musicians doing Christmas music. It started with an album back in 2004 (I think) and now they do a short concert series in Finland every December - Marko's been involved pretty much from the get-go, but there's been loads of singers involved at various times. Some of my personal favorites:
      - Varpunen jouluaamuna (Sparrow On Christmas Morning) from 2019 - Marko and a Helsinki children's choir.
      - Pieni rumpalipoika (Little Drummer Boy) also from 2019 - Marko and several others.
      - Oi Jouluyö (O Holy Night) from 2016 - Floor (with a "special guest" no less!)
      - Ave Maria from both 2019 - Floor and Marko, and from 2017 - Tarja and Marko.

To my understanding this was recorded within a year of letting Tarja (1st singer) go, so even before the "Dark Passion Play - 2007" Album, that it is in, was recorded and published. This song was a vent for the very negative feelings from the guys in the Band towards Tarja's Husband, who when appearing to the Bands close circle bit by bit destroyed everything the Band members had build, so that's why they sing "snake" pointed at Him.

Welcome to the dark side of NW. This is my favorite angry song. Pure rage made into a wonderful piece of music. I just love the riffs and how the brass grows and grows in the end. You know what the song is about and it's obvious that they were all very angry, just listen to Marko killing it, Jukka basically beating up his drum set, Emppu driving out those riffs and even Tuomas' playing sounds angry. I always feel bad saying this but sometimes I wish Tuomas was pissed more often.🤘🏽
Thanks Home Gnome he definitely needed to hear this. It's one more thing that shows how diverse their music is.

Without the backstory on this track - it would definitely be a part of many Nightwish live shows, i think. Because its a very heavy song with tons of energy. But, taking the message "part" into consideration - we all know that it will never happen. I mean this song played live. Well, fortunately for us all Nightwish has so many great songs that their set-list is great the way it is.

It's part of what has made Nightwish so impressive over the past decades that the band could realistically be very successful with Marco doing all the lead vocals. Their backup singer is more skilled than a lot of lead singers out there. Naturally this dynamic changed after he left the band... But we can always hope for a comeback.

I agree that this is some of Marco's best vocal work. I love love love this song. I actually love Endlessness the most out of all of his songs. The reason MPG was written is sad and it's too bad that Marcellus decided to insert himself into Nightwish's business. Tarja was obviously feeling some discontentment, or she would not have confided negative emotions to Marcellus. In their book she mentioned that the band was not bothering to secure her private dressing rooms for her costume changes or giving her the time and means to take care of her voice. They were very young guys but there was no reason for them not to make sure she was able to perform at her best. She was a big part of their sound and just as important as Tuomas's keyboards or Emppu's guitar, if not more so. But she didn't have to insult Tuomas or tell him she could leave any time without notice, suggesting that would be the end of Nightwish. Marcellus insinuated himself into something he had no business being a part of and threw a monkey wrench in the band's plans and business. He originally did it, I think, because he felt like someone needed to take care of Tarja. But the way it ended he was making decisions for her without even consulting her, demanding more money from shows and generally being unreasonable. Everything in saying is documented somewhere, whether it be in their book, interviews, or other things like interviews. Marcellus's actions seeded resentment on both sides and everyone was unhappy. If they hadn't parted the way they did, they would have parted another way. I've come down on a particular side but I'm trying to speak as neutrally as possible here. At least Tarja finally realized what a negative impact Marcellus had on her overall, since they're now divorced. In glad both she and Nightwish have had lucrative careers.

Jukka is playing the drums. Jukka was with the band until 2013. Dark Passion Play was released somewhere around 2007. MPG has never been performed in concert. Tuomas has expressed some regret regarding this song.

Love that first heavy dark rif!~ Jukka on drums, sounds like Annette on backing vocals... this is post-Tarja, pre-Floor, so must be Annette.... just checked it is from 2007.

8,9.. hmm, thats exatly what i think to.. this song is well composed, sometimes its a little to harsh lyrics for me to listen to, but Marko do it well, i agree, its a great song really, that give you the sense, wow they are really pissed off, and that what the purpose of this is right.. also great outro with the horns, i dig that..
Btw, Its Jukka on the drums..
Its also true this is far more teknical for Marko to sing then for example the Islander, i think what it comes down to, is that Marko often did the Islander live, and never this one, so peeps show him some love for that, and also it comes down to, if you like the song that smash you down, or the sing along one..

Do some Tarot from 80s where Marco sings lead. or watch for your own pleasure: th-cam.com/video/HFXcvqgWkHw/w-d-xo.html. Wings of Darkness is the songs. This link is to the original video. They redid it 20 or 30 years later, but I prefer the original (not great quality picture though)

this song is off of Dark passion play, Juka is the drummer on this one. i believe this was written before Annette joined them, either way they still felt it would have been unfair to Annett to sing this, since she wasn't with the band to have any beef with Tarja. also they've never played this live, i think for the same reason.
also Floor and Tarja are still good friends so I think Floor wouldn't want to sing this either. plus they've all moved on from those times.

Tuomas needed to get things straight. Poet and the pendulum, ByeBye Beautiful and Master Passion Greed are his way of breaking with the past and moving forward., all part of Passion Play. Not a song for live performance this shows Tuomas genius in putting his hatred into a song, a good one at that. The alternative? Taking a shotgun to Mr Tarja?

Great Idea to stay neutral on the best singer thing or who was at fault for the breakups. You are a musician and understand how these things work. Like a marriage. They don't always last. This was Jukka playing the drums on this one. I think it was Emppu and then Tuomas joined in as well? I thought I heard a couple pinch harmonics in the lines. I also think you second thought is correct. It is straight most of the song and double at the beginning. Overall, it is about the anger in the lyrics. You are correct. Marko has the voice and attitude to bring the anger and male aggression of a metal singer. His biggest influence vocally is Ronnie James Dio.
Unfortunately Tuomas never wanted to perform this live. It is too angry and the past needs to stay where it belongs. There was no resolution at the time of this recording. It was still very fresh.
Who the hell are you to tell me
What to do, why to do, why bother
Leech in a mask of virtue
Such waste, to ever think of you again
Hey Judas, your Christess was our love
Hit and run, your will be done
    Never sorry, never wrong
    Master passion greed
    Some day you shall flee,
    Panting and weak
    Master passion greed
All within me gone but pain and hope
Hoping that the pain would fade away
    Seek her
    Seduce her
    Tame her
    Blame her
    Have her
    Kill her
    Feast on it all
With awakening the tears will begin
To my everlasting shame silence took me

I do my best not to use any curse words for 2 reasons. 1. I do my best to keep this channel kid friendly, because I know a lot of parents let their kids watch this channel. 2. I don't believe in using 4-letter shortcuts. I am an educated individual with an extensive vocabulary, so I don't see the point. I will say, I have cursed on the channel on VERY rare occasions but it is EXTREMELY rare. Even when I do, I'll usually bleep them out with the dolphin noises.

I love the _sound_ of MPG, but the lyrics put me off. I know it's catharsis, and I will rant about people to help me feel better too, but I do it in private. Putting it out there feels like a dick move - no wonder Tarja recorded a song called "Enough"! (The Poet and the Pendulum is different, it's about Tuomas, not attacking his enemy.)

  • @kimmikke_
    @kimmikke_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The second verse sounds like a different person and according to one reaction someone said, that the second verse was sung by Tuomas Holopainen actually (this information is on some published source, he wanted to also sing the feelings out), Marko sings again in the last couple of sentences. That is also how it sounds, not only Marko changing tone or colour, but totally different voice and person. In the very early times of Nightwish before first album Tuomas was singing in the gigs, no Marko yet in the band that time.
