- For anyone who has this issue this might work for you. It's restored my broken ps2 slim to working again

Remember: *Something* made that fuse blow in the first place. If the fuse is simply bridged, rather than replaced, the system will be subject to more severe damage next time.
Yes, or the fuse is just old and died. Plus ps2s are hardly a scarce resource

Easily replaced, just need to find the right part and solder the replacement
@@n_rosberg_5846 Yes, you can replace it with a new 32V 2.5A fuse in a 0603 (metric version 1608) package. That would be the ideal way to fix it and maintain the protection the fuse offers. This applies to SCPH-70000 motherboards (other models will likely have different component locations and/or values).

Thanks for taking a look man! I've bought a load of slims recently listed as broken or untested. Had one with this problem, another with a loose power socket that I resoldered, ones that don't play discs that I add a freemcboot memory card and hd to and then you always get some that are fully working!

Bought a second hand one recently. When I hit the power button the fan spins like mad then it turns off and the red light starts flashing.

Hey man, I’m 17 and stupid. I’m having the same problem where the light goes green that automatically back to red. I see the PS17 number but everything is so small. What little thing do I apply solder to?
So each fuse has a metal pin at either end, you basically apply solder to the top of the fuse that bridges the two pins to complete the circuit as the fuse has failed internally (if that's the issue)

My Board revision is different than yours and all of the fuses i found tested good continuity with my multimeter.
Probably something else then if you're having issues, there's never a one size fits all
I'm gonna try this later today. My fat ps2 works but my slim is having the same issues

Hey, thanks for this. I've got one ps2 that shows a blank screen (not "no signal," but a black screen with no sound) that I think has a bad board component. I found another that's dirt cheap that has a red light but doesn't come on, and I'm thinking about just yoinking the power button from one to the other. I recognize that when I get the thing it may be an different issue, and I'm just left with two "spare parts" machines, but that's the fun of saving poor, innocent consoles from a landfill.
I do want to ask though, cause I'm so new to component repair: where on earth do you even start? I found the schematic for the SCPH 70000 I was working on but it was hieroglyphic to me. Should I just poke around the mb with a continuity tester on anything that looks like a fuse and then maybe a capacitor? I hate being good with a screwdriver but clueless with a multi meter.
Tbh I'm not great diagnosing these things either, testing continuity of fuses would be a good start, testing capacitors a little trickier. All with no guarantee of finding the fault. Good luck!
Where do you solder to bridge the fuse?
The fuse has two vertical pins either side, you can bridge these. Alternatively you can desolder the entire fuse and either replace or bridge the traces

Light goes off completely? Sounds like a different issue. Could still be a fuse, if you have a multimeter you could check them on the motherboard

my ps2 tries to turn on by itself when i plug it in, everything works perfectly and it starts the power-on-routine, the laser moves and the disc spins but the ps2 turns off and tries to turn on again, turns off, turns on, sometimes (but super rarely) it works without turning off and i need help
Slim or fat ps2? Might not be getting enough power. I saw someone with this issue trying to power a slim ps2 with a PSone psu

You'd need a multimeter to test, not sure if it's the same as the issue I described here though

Did you get the right fuse and was it definitely bridging the connection? Also on a slim right? There could well be other causes of these problems
Yes it is a slim and I made shure it was the right fuse the ps17 and got good connection do you know what else it could possibly be ?
Sorry, not sure. Shame this didn't work. If you've got a multimeter then I guess you could check the other fuses

I don't know for sure, but I suspect it would if it has this issue. Board might have a slightly different layout due to the revisions
If anybody knows a guide how to do the process to fix it , I don't have the experience how to do it. I know where is the ps17. I don't have any idea how to make bridge is too small the fuse . please advice thank you.
Look up a soldering guide? Just a case of melting some solder across the contacts
@@londonretrovideogames1473 Thanks for the quick response, I don't have experience doing soldering, but looking the fuse ps17 so small means is basically a drop of soldering compound on the back of the fuse to create a bridge, I am assuming that, please advice thanks.

That's what I did to bridge the pins at either end. Basically needs to reestablish the circuit that is broken from the fuse failing

I had the same issue and fixed it. However, the system won't boot, and the fan won't spin. Additionally, I can't restart the console

So is this something I could check if the light won't go green at all? I have a PS2 slim 75001 with a bad power switch(button broke and got it from someone else so I can't put it back on board), and even if I swap another power board into it, it still won't power on.
That sounds like a different issue, not sure about it. Still sounds like it might be the switch

Yes, the green blob is the fuse, just apply some solder to bridge the metal pins at either end

I'm sure you can find a soldering 101 video. You're basically going to melt solder to bridge the pins. Apply the soldering iron to the pins to heat them up and feed the solder in until it melts and add enough until the two pins are bridged

There are different board revisions, a bit of googling will find diagrams, you should be able to find yours and they should be labeled
I have the same problem. U didn’t point the exact location of the fuse.
Well, there are multiple revisions of the board so yours may not be the same. Until you open it up you won't know but the right fuse should he labelled

i recently found my old ps2 again and unfortunately found out that i had this problem… and its because the fuse itself and the other part next to it oxidized and broke off, would i be able to replace these components, or solder those connections as a hack?
the components being the ps17 fuse talked about in the video, and the big box next to it…
The fuse is not necessary and can be bypassed. Not sure what the other one is that you mention, depends how important it is

Yeah exactly, the purpose if a fuse it to protect other components from too high a voltage/current. This fuse fails due to age so the connection is broken, the solder bridge reinstates the connection. There is a risk that you lose that protection, but after 20 years it's not been needed and it's not like ps2's aren't plentiful/cheap, it was the best selling console of all time after all

No, you need to replace it somehow. That's why adding a solder bridge works. If it's showing this error then it's the equivalent of the fuse not being there as the connection is broken. Bridging the connection with solder reinstates the circuit and it should work

Leave it there, apply solder on top to bridge the two vertical metal pins either end. This reestablishes the connection that may have failed internally

I got this problem on a phat 50003. Checked every fuse on the board and all are fine, so a bit stumped now. Shame as its a nice aqua blue model that looks hardly used.
Sorry, not sure about this issue on a phat. Given the rare color you could always case swap it with a working black one
What about the battery? Maybe It has less voltage, I have that problem but a new battery 3V

I'd be surprised if the battery was the issue, could also be a bad solder joint somewhere, hard to tell
i plan to but one just like this for dirt cheap but i am not sure if the issue will be the same, can green light indicate a different problem ?
There are certainly multiple issues that can go wrong with these. At one point I was buying lots of untested slims, plenty just worked without issue

Is the one you're looking at know to be faulty or just untested?
@@londonretrovideogames1473 it is definitely faulty because the seller has written that: "when turning on green light comes on and then turn into red with no display at all"

Yup, this is happening with mine. Plugged it in for the first time in ten years, red light came on so power was going through, but when the light turned green, ałmost immediately back to red. Guess I figured out the problem lol

Yes, there are different revisions of the motherboard, might need to do some googling, you might be able to find some pics that show the different components for the different revisions. Sometimes the labels from the components are a short distance from the part and there is a little arrow
LondonRetroVideoGames so I fixed the issue and than the console turned on it did the start up and than just shut down completely stopped working now it doesn’t even have a red light on
@@ramenman2162 could it be something else too? Maybe something happened during the taking apart and putting back together. Check the ribbon cable to the power switch, also how well attached the power socket is to the board

Any normal electrical solder is fine, you just need to reinstate the connection of the fuse which fails over time to give these symptoms

Have you experienced the problem of the power signal not staying on? currently struggling because of it. (for the fat version)
Could it be a power issue? Is there a loose connection somewhere? I had a slim that had a loose power socket, resoldering the connection made it as good as new.

Certainly sounds like something is wrong, if you get nothing from pressing the power button it could be a number of things, but not something I'd have an obvious fix for. Light should go green after the power button is pressed

Could just be the switch, if you keep pressing (wiggling it about) does it eventually turn on?

Well it's enough solder to bridge the pins, you're re-establishing the connection that presumably is broken in the fuse
@@londonretrovideogames1473 I actually have another unit I’m trying to repair where the power light stays red and won’t turn over no matter how hard I press. Swapped power buttons with a working unit and I know that’s not the problem because it’s original switch worked in another broken ps2 and Vice versa. Any idea what that might be? I’m thinking something similar to this, but the light never goes green

My ps2 actually have the same problem, but sometimes it turns on and when i insert a game it turns off, and this makes me think that there's some problem with the cd reader, or that maybe the console dosent reach enough power for reading the disc. Any help?
Have you got the right power supply? The original 8.5v one? I once bought one described as faulty that came with a 7.5v psone psu. It does sound like power, when a game is read the power draw increases which will kill the system if it can't draw enough. It could be the power brick, or something internal. I also had one where the soldering of the power connector on the console came loose from the motherboard. Resoldering it fixed the issue
@@londonretrovideogames1473 Yep, i have the original right one, the ps2 worked for most of my childhood with the same power supply so i think the problem is in the console, not in the power supply
You could open the console up and take a look if there is something obvious, but it's not a problem I've seen other than a psu not providing enough volts unfortunately

@@LoniTheFricc you could always take a punt and put a little solder bridge across them and see if that resolves the issue

@@LickeyTongue you can just remove it and bridge, same principle. It's a fuse so you're just rebuilding the connection of it's failed. It may be something else but it's worth checking
what is the number written on ps17 fuse?
Couldn't tell you, it also now has solder on it :). The are various revisions of this mb but many have ps17 written close by on the board
when we play a game for about 2-5 minutes our ps2 slim SCPH-90004 will automatically turn off
