I have a question Vince, or any of your wonderful knowledgeable watchers could answer that would be fab. I have a Victrola record player that runs on a 5 volt power supply. Would there be any way to convert it to being a wind up record player? Given the current energy price hikes and our decent into eating bugs, scorching hot summers and nuclear winters I wouldn't mind having some music to listen to when we're all plunged into darkness and doing everything by candlelight. Thanks!
@@TD75 Unfortunately, after my latest escape attempt (involving a book, a paperclip and a candle) was thwarted and I'm still refusing to give them information, Number 2 has restricted my access to the village store.
I fixed my fat ps2 the last time you did a tear down of one. I only had to replace my power switch but never opened one up before and watching you do it helped me out.
Vince, 7000x models can be modded with an internal HDD, freemcboot can use this to play games with the Lowest loading times. It's a very cool mod to do!
Nice simple fix, just dry / cracked solder on the power input. Well done on anther item repaired. I've eventually finished repairing the wifes car (replacing two turbo's what a nightmare), so I've been back onto doing a few repair video's myself.
Yip common fault on a lot of power adapter plug in units if it gets plugged in and out a lot, the input connector flexes and causes a failure. This is how we find bits of paper, matcstics etc stuck down the side of the power sockets, eventually they completely give way, USB sockets are notorious for this. Another good and informative video to watch. Ray 👍👍
Once I got a PS1 for free with the same issue, but it was the power connector for the laser pickup. Easy and satisfying fix. I was so happy with it, I listened a whole CD album on it :) I don't have any interesting PS1 games.
In my experience, that's the most common issue when it comes to no power at the ps2 with the external power supply. Same for the ps one, the smaller version of the ps 1. I don't think it's fall damage, it's more likely the result of the massive connector with the heavy denoising coil and the relatively thick cable, that is putting a lot of pressure on the solder joints, especially when the device is lifted while connected.
Always find that power jack broken. They brake due to the cable weight from the power brick on the floor and the console on a desk .Lovely fix tho vince 😍 👌
Vince, you always solder everything three times. I think your soldering is perfectly fine, which you can tell by the shiny appearance of the joint after your first go. Doing it three times is just putting unnecessary more heat into the board. Try having more confidence in your technique.
The main reason the solder job gets so shiny and clean is because of the leaded solder, if lead free solder is used it gets really pale and crusty joints no matter how good you are at soldering. However Vince combine both skills and solder together
Nice fix Vince. Just to add, my first step is to check the PSU for voltage before opening the console. You know this of course, but it's worth mentioning for the newbies.
I've got 3 PS2 slims, 7 PS2 fats and 3 PS3s in my possession. They all have various faults but it's just difficult to diagnose or find parts for (one PS2 has a crack in its power board). Another issue is having a PS2 that is set for NTSC regions (I'm from New Zealand so we only have PAL TVs). Would love to go through them but my level of knowledge isn't up to scratch, despite having 6 months experience at a nearby farming electronics manufacturing company. I hope I can get round to them again
Nice easy fix. You get the same issue with those figure of 8 sockets. They are just not mounted/strengthened properly like they should be. After numerous forceful plugin's the solder joint just fails.
Vince - I've sold things on eBay in the past as spares or for parts, not working even when it WAS working - three reasons for that - 1) "Parts" sometimes fetch a higher auction price (for whatever reason) and 2) I haven't used or tested something in quite sometime so I can't really claim that it's in perfect running order - the new owner WILL find any issue and "claim" that you as the seller knew it was bad. 3) It has batteries that have gone bad/flat - say for an old digital camera that has a battery pack the camera may power up, work fine until you go to use the flash and then dies.
Definitely true about 1), to the point where it's actually ridiculous. I've seen defective and incomplete stuff for 30% over the normal price of a complete, fully working item.
You’re like one of the only people who buy faulty items and get annoyed when they work without any fixes! I find that funny but obviously the reason is you want to make content. I have some faulty items that you can have but I don’t think they’re interesting. I might send something over to you and maybe a scratched game for you to try and polish if you’re interested in that?
Another solid video. Thanks! Since uve got ur new soldering station i've been meaning to ask if you would please share your routine on how to 'preserve the tip' after a quick job (and just in general) like this? Thanks!
Nice fix and interesting game at the end :) Bought a fat PS2 in 2017, and probably someone has replaced the battery in the past, as it's still keeping correct time and date. Strangely the warranty sticker looks intact though, as if it's never opened, but I guess the sticker has been replaced as well.
I have three PS2's that still keep the correct time and one them is 20 years old and was definitely never opened. I think the main reason for it that the console was most of the time plugged into a power outlet, the PS2 doesn't really use the internal battery when connected to external power.
@@smartfox2295 That's possible, my 2009 PS3 Slim battery lost it's power in 10 years, as I've kept it out of the mains power when I don't use it, as it doesn't have main power switch.
Ah yes the good ole playstation 2. Me and my brother had one as a kid. Played allot of racing games on that console. Always liked the ps2. And yes they do tend to have disc drive issues on occasion. I had to replace the laser module on my brothers a couple times, that was mainly on the slim model. I played on the fat model and that never really had any issues.
This is a common fault on the N64 as the power brick sits against the pins and can jostle a bit and put a good bit of stress on the pins. I also had a PSone that had this exact problem. Always nice when the fix is easy.
I've had similar too with a Milwaukee battery charger that was supposed to be "DEAD", although I did end up doing a tear down video of it and possibly finding a couple of suspected dry joints.
hello great video . ive a few old ps3 consoles . One has a serious error rsod witch powers up and the other is ylod. Would you like to make a video trying to fix them
maybe you could solder a battery holder instead of that little battery, I did it with the philips cdi, I fisically opened the chip that serves the purpose with a dremel, removed the embedded battery and I soldered two wires and a battery holder with a cr2032 . Now even if it dies again it would be enough to replace the cr2032 for a few cents.
I got a Polaroid camera that has a flash but don't work you can hear it charging up but doesn't seem to actually stop maybe you can look into something like that and maybe help me out figure out what the problem is
Not dropped, or should say I wouldn’t suspect that because of the broken joints. It’s a very common failure point just from plugging in and out over the years
I was thinking the same thing. I think it was the original xbox suffered from a similar issue, but as you say kids wiggling the power cable in and out of it.
Can I ask you something right quick? This may sound dumb, but when you're soldering do you use ventilation or just kinda...hold your breath? lol I only ask cause I'm about to give it a go and everyone is saying ventilation is super important.
Great fix! the Guitar Hero game is a better game but 100% likely to generate a content match if that footage gets broadcast., sad, imo, otherwise, as said another great video, thanks.
Back in the 80s I had a job servicing office equipment, desktop calculators, electronic typewriters, dictation machines etc. We had a minimum charge of 1 hours labour and I lost count of the number of items comming in with a no power job sheet when the fault was a blown fuse or loose connection in the power leads plug.

The PSU is external, so you can't really shock yourself with a PS2 slim (atleast not this model, the last revision actually had an internal PSU).
That PS2 start-up sound is so nostalgic. Glad you saved a PS2 from going in the bin for such a simple fix.
