  • Another unsung quartet of illustrators from the past who I think deserve more recognition. Hermann Stockmann, Georges de Feure, Honor Appleton and Luigi Martinati.

Pete, your videos always take me to a calm and pleasant place. Perhaps the alternative title for your series should be “Zen and the art of celebrating marvellous illustrators”.

Hi again and that's a nice thing to say. I genuinely wanted to produce a series without all the manic shouting and 'hey guys!' fake excitement so many videos seem to be tainted by. Confirmation that I've succeeded in this ambition is particularly welcome.

It's always a sad little jolt to hear the tone of your voice go down a bit as you describe how an artist will sometimes disappear from public view, sometimes end up poverty stricken. You do a wonderful job in how respectful you are when talking of them. I'm sure they would all appreciate what you do here. Thanks.

Hello and thanks a lot for that. The sadness is genuine - I really don't understand how so many of the illustrators I've featured have ended up so forgotten. If the channel brings them to wider notice then I haven't been wasting my time.

      M. Donavan! Yes. Peter Beard has a great deal of EMPATHY! His bio: claims he is an illustrator also and has taught such lecture material for nigh two decades! And. I was amazed to learn, from an unimpeachable * source (* that's code for *"BRITISH"/ Not "U. S".) That Mr Beard does all of his own camera fade in's/out's and editing. Dear Mr Beard, thank you for another SUPERB episode. I LOVED it.
I find Honor Appleton's work wonderfully lovely. Indeed delicate and, exceptionally, distinctive. It has a quality all its own. I have seen 100s over the years and they stand out like tiny suns.
Prolific. She lived a hermit-like life in Hove near her elder sister Alice who also trained as an artist but whose work I have never seen.
As well as the many Craddock books including the famed Josephine titles, Honor also tackled the nursery classics and did so in an uncharacteristic way. They are VERY singular and worth examining as they have a different take on those drawn by others including Rackham and Dulac. They make the reader go back to the source and find the exact passage being illustrated. Rare. Sunlight by the sea is different to that over land and I feel it gave her work a quality that is not always present in artwork by dwellers in towns and cities.

Hello again and thanks for the comment. Unusually for me I actually liked the work of all 4 illustrators in this instalment, and if I had to pick a favourite it would be Stockmann if only because I consider myself a lowly stylistic descendent. But I must admit Appleton's watercolours are among the most charming watercolours I've seen.

Another lucky dip. Hermann Stockmann, prolific and interesting and somehow familiar, at least some images. De Feure's offering of such varied works as illustrations, paintings, furniture, is compelling, his interieurs elegant.
Captivating, charming, delicate - adjectives fitting Honor Appleton's work, which was really delightful.
Thank you for all the time you spend in putting together this extraordinary string of pearls. A visual and aural delight, not to mention the fact that you are gently educating.

Toshiro!!! What a bonus to have 2 posters of him and one of them to end the video!! Isn't he magnificent?? :D :D A couple decades ago I discovered the 'foreign film' video section at the library and my intro to Akira K films was cemented, especially those with Mr Mifune. I watched a few of them over and over but never "The Hidden Fortress" so I'll have to make up for it. I haven't watched them for years now but do remember "Sanjuro" as my ultimate favorite. He was older, more relaxed in his role, and the story comical (up to a point) and he was superb in it IMO. But I digress! I really enjoyed all these artists this episode. Their innate skill at drawing humans whether realistic or comical continues to amaze me, especially those that "quit" school. It's hard for me to capture a human face and I haven't the imagination to create such diverse but accurate faces of even the cartoon 'mugs'. I do love a soft watercolor any day though, reminiscent of my brother's Alice and Jerry books (I had Dick and Jane). Give me a line of pale hollyhocks against a white picket fence and I'm swiftly back in time, safe and innocent of the world. Well, I've rambled enough here - thanks again, Pete! Your narrative has only gained strength as it succinctly addresses the artists as professionally as any professor or art historian out there. Good work, as always. :)

Similiar to graphic cartoons (is that word still used?) the inking and lettering may be done other than the cartoonist.
Either way the lettering is really well done.
Don't know if typography is still emphasized in graphic classes. Used to be fifty per cent of illustration/graphics was mastering type, typefaces, etc.. Then again, wouldn't have wanted to a typefitter, typesetter, adjusting type to the given space available.

@@greggoreo6738 Hello again, and for brevity's sake I'll combine my replies to your recent replies into one bundle, if that's OK with you. First, the oil paint conundrum. I have often speculated about this and have yet to find a satisfactory answer. But certainly way back when (early 1900s) those using oils - Wyeth and Parrsh spring to mind - were almost exclusively illustrating for books, and so the pressure of deadlines was virtually non-existent. But that wouldn't explain away those working in magazines such as the Leyendecker brothers. However, they seem to have almost exclusively lived close to where their work would be published and transport would not have been such a major concern. And that time the images were scanned to separate out the CMYK plates which would not have been affected by any undried paint. But all this is just me rambling. And as far as the Diary of a Nobody is concerned you are pretty much correct that I'll never make such a video. For someone whose career has been little more than a spear carrier/walk-on part it would be remarkably presumptious. And although I'm not ashamed of some of the work I created, it's hardly in the same league as those I feature. Sorry.

I could only hear the buzzing after I turned the audio higher than I would normally listen to the video at. Only after I heard the buzzing at higher volumes was I able to vaguely pick it out at a normal volume, but most of the time it's drowned out by your voice. Comparing the N.C. Wyeth video to this shows a huge difference, and it sounds good. So, to me that sounds like a success.
Sometimes, at the starts and end of audio clips, whether it was a noise gate or manual cutting, I noticed the sound of breathing felt cut-off.
Right at 0:23, the initial breath taken in felt choppy.
The same at 0:44 and especially 1:44.
It happens through the video at various points, but I particularly noticed it in those above timestamps towards the beginning.
I particularly notice something going on at 4:25 with the breath starting and stopping and a choppy pattern like this: "b--ut f--o--rmal study didn't suit him."
It might be fine like this; these are just observations I had.

Hello and don't take this amiss but I was dreading your response to the video - as I was convinced my fiddling had made no difference. So it's with great relief that it's been at least a partial success. The noise reduction was just this side of the whole vocal breaking up, and what you are describing sounds like me being somewhat inaccurate in snipping out the bits between dialogue. For now I'll settle for this - and hope you will too, and I'm extremely grateful that you have taken the time and trouble to help me try to fix the problem. Another viewer speculated that it might be because I'm using a mini-jack connection rather than USB, and said this could be a prblem if it went into the motherboard (whatever the hell that is). But as a lifelong technophobe I fear change and am inclined to stick with the devil I know. But is this something that makes sense to you?

Hello and yes he is. He's actually been waiting in line for a few years now and for reasons I don't understand I keep skipping over him in favour of others. He's not the only one either, and I will rectify this within the next few unsung instalments.

Hello and I'm pleased to say I recently completed a section on the wonderful Mr. Crane. But the bad news is there's a queue and the video he's in will be unsung 100, so it'll be a while before he makes his appearance. Worth the wait, though.

I’ve been watching this wonderful series and I’m wondering if you are familiar with an artist by the name Jim Woodring. This question came to me as I was watching your video on Rick Griffin. Woodring’s art is to me at least , as innovative as Griffin.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hello and thanks for your appreciation. And yes I'm familiar with Jim Woodring's marvellous output, and find him to be one of lamentably few contemporary artists I actually admire. Sadly he isn't a good fit for the channel as he's much more an artist than illustrator and equally important he isn't actually dead. I note with some alarm he's actually younger than me....

Hello and she is currently a work in progress. And although in Britain and Europe she's hardly known at all I'm aware that her Kewpies have made her quite well known in the USA. I hope you'll be pleased to know that the plan is to make a solo video about her as she created some really wonderful other work which isn't as well known. I don't know when it will be finished but hopefully in the next couple of months. ( I have dozens on the go at any given time so can't be any more precise than that.)

Hello and thanks a lot for the suggestion. I was aware of Amadee Varin and his vegetables, and they are a great series of comic images. I'm currently working on a video about J.J. Grandville, a bit older than Varin and his work influenced Varin a lot. Very surreal.

Pete, I love your well researched commentary, but I don't watch your unsung series because way too often, some of the illustrators featured are of no interest to me. I would really appreciate it if there was a focus to the unsung videos such as a period, style, location or other theme that would tie the multiple subjects together, or better yet, I would definitely be inclined to watch shorter videos that feature a single illustrator. Thanks for understanding.

Hello and tanks for the comment. I'm sorry to hear youre not wild about the format, but some of the other videos that aren't the unsung heroes do feature one illustrator or a type/style. Did you miss them?
