The 1990s was a fascinating time for railroading along Colorado’s Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Breathtaking scenery offered a backdrop for the transition eras of the newly merged Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, and Union Pacific’s acquisition of its rival, the Southern Pacific Railroad. Also taking place was a transition in motive power. “Spartan cab” SD40-2 and GP60 diesel locomotives were being replaced by massive SD70MAC and AC4400CW “wide cab” diesels with new alternating-current electric traction motors. Heavy coal trains conquered steep grades on the Denver-Pueblo Joint Line, and the Moffat Tunnel Route west of Denver, with the latest in motive power. Other rail routes visited included BNSF’s Front Range, Brush and Akron Subdivisions, as well as Union Pacific’s Greeley, Limon and Tennessee Pass Subdivisions.
