  • One of the most famous Romans to ever live. He's been featured in multiple books, plays, and movies, to the point of becoming almost a pop culture icon. From being a loyal general under Julius Caesar, to a triumvir who ruled Rome’s eastern provinces, and even the lover of Cleopatra herself. I present to you... MARCVS ANTONIVS!

      @@jadielf_ It's from Antony's speech at Caesar's funeral, part of which he wept over Caesar's blood soaked tunic and spoke at length to rouse the people of Rome in war against his assassins. It's often regarded as one of the best pieces of rhetoric to come out of Antiquity, with Antony being forbidden from speaking ill of the conspirators and thus doing so through irony and by appealing to the anger of the crowd about the death of one so beloved by them. The man said he couldn't orate well, and that he was no good politician and but a simple soldier, but uhhh they would go on to absolutely kick the hell out of the conspirators shortly afterwards. I don't know if any original writings exist of the speech itself, however it was famously dramatized by Shakespeare in his eponymous play about Caesar and in countless plays and movies since then.

    The Chad of Rome
    52BC - 41BC
    Simp of Cleopatra
    41BC - 30BC
    But in all seriousness, Antony was one of the most recognized Romans of the 1st Century BC, Helped make his name by assisting Caesar in defeating Vercingetorix
    Came to Caesar's aid in Greece against Pompey instead of doing the most Roman thing & leaving him to die there
    While he sucked as a Governor
    He was a good general & trusted friend (for a time)
    And gave the greatest Speech in Roman history during Caesar's funeral
    His hate for Octavian stems from being bypassed in Caesar's will. Before then the two probably barely knew of eachother. After nearly a decade of loyal service, he was passed by for a sickly teenager that up until then, wasn't much more than a mama's boy with a very powerful mind
    Unfortunately the Witch's Eastern Dark Magic corrupted Antony to such a state that he couldn't be saved

Despite me liking Augustus more Mark Antony is still a great roman. While not perhaps as legendary as Caesar, Augustus or even Aurelian or Constantine Antony was an obvious potential heir to Caesar's legacy. The diplomatic dynasty he was hoping to set up in the eastern provinces through his marriage to Cleopatra was incredibly interesting and I would love to speculate how it would have shaped the eastern Mediterranean. However, ultimately I think Octavian's far more unified Imperial system won out. In many ways both Octavian and Antony had competing political visions of Roman Civilization's future.

    Mark Antony may have been a party animal, but while Octavian got his ass whopped he managed to avenge Caesar's death.
    Also, according to Plutrach, he committed suicide when he heard the false rumour that Cleopatra had done so too, remarking "You have been braver than I, but you shan't be alone for long". Gotta respect him for that as well as how he was willing to suffer the same hardships as his soldiers when escaping through Armenia during the winter

    Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;
    I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him;
    The evil that men do lives after them,
    The good is oft interred with their bones,
    So let it be with Caesar … The noble Brutus
    Hath told you Caesar was ambitious:
    If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
    And grievously hath Caesar answered it …
    Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest,
    (For Brutus is an honourable man;
    So are they all; all honourable men)
    Come I to speak in Caesar’s funeral …
    He was my friend, faithful and just to me:
    But Brutus says he was ambitious;
    And Brutus is an honourable man….
    He hath brought many captives home to Rome,
    Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill:
    Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?
    When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept:
    Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:
    Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
    And Brutus is an honourable man.
    You all did see that on the Lupercal
    I thrice presented him a kingly crown,
    Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition?
    Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
    And, sure, he is an honourable man.
    I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke,
    But here I am to speak what I do know.
    You all did love him once, not without cause:
    What cause withholds you then to mourn for him?
    O judgement! thou art fled to brutish beasts,
    And men have lost their reason…. Bear with me;
    My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar,
    And I must pause till it come back to me.

    Now its a bit unfair to call Anthony a mere simp, Cleopatra was somewhat of a genius when it came to intrigue and she made sure to do everything she could to have at least one of the Roman leaders sympathetic to Egypt so it could remain more or less indepandant instead of annexed by Rome, if anything she was the simp and Anthony was the one that made the mistake to reach out for her in answer to the image she wanted to project

    • @MartyBones

      As far as I know it went something like this:
      Antony = The military power of the alliance, Caesar's right hand, amazing general and the man that was supposed to annex Egypt.
      Octavian = Young boy, important piece because he was Caesar's "son", still pretty smart.
      Lepidus = Old man with experience and probably the smartest, even the Africa deal was actually huge.
