Wasn't this the most expensive pornographic movie ever made? With two major movie stars in it no less! Peter O'toole, Malcolm McDowell!

When I first saw it, i found it boring. In fact, this film is unforgetable both due to McDOwell's performance as well as for the setting of blood and marble, only surpassed by Fellini's Satyricon in that regard. We need to internalize this is no movie where you wait to be entertained. It is an opportunity for the audience to seat themselves and witness it just another of the palace's potential victims. All the partially pointless moments together with the lack of a clear plot underline the insanity perfectly. BUt no one raises their voice. Everybody living under this selfrighteous tyrant had to play along no matter what profanity happened, and the film depicted this power trip perfectly.

I completely found this movie so not right for me to watch. I can't recall how old I was or where it was that I saw this film but, I do know I was way to young to view it. Just a kid not even a teen. I did find an interest in history because of it. To be honest, the whole role of pointlessness and tyrant along with insanity, hasn't really changed. It's almost like from the age of the Roman tyrants, the ruler is just overthrown or conquered and replaced again and again and again. It's amazing what we as the people will put up with without putting any thought into truly seeing the evil that could be done. For such intelligent beings, we sure are stupid

I have been looking for this film for years.
I was surprised it was airing on Columbus Georgia's Fox 54 during the early 80s after hours.

Despite the movie getting criticised. It still had fantastic acting performances from the British and Italian cast. Especially Helen Mirren, Malcolm McDowell, John Gielgud and Peter O'Toole. Also it had excellent set designs. You almost felt you were back in ancient rome with its marble floors and stone buildings. Where the movie falls down is there is not enough back story or character development like you had with other movies on ancient rome. Also while Ancient Emperors were vicious horrific tyrants I have no doubt those horrors were perpetrated but you wanted to see less horror and more story especially the political intrigue and how he was a very unpopular with Roman military and citizenry. We get none of the political back story. However clearly like a lot of Roman leaders he was murderous vicious psychopath which was well shown in the movie. The Russian classical movie soundtrack from Shostakovich I think was also a good addition to the movie. Gave it the classical feel with the music dealing with Classical ancient rome albeit with a very brutal and mad tyrant which Ancient Rome had a lot of those and many of them were assasinated by dissatisfied or fearful of their rule of ambition by the Senate or Roman Army or Roman citizenry. The Ancient Roman political class was a vicious violent bunch and that is well shown in this movie.

Yes, it does. There have been quite a few "leaders " who were completely corrupt due to the total control they had. Even today, there are men who have total rule over a country. Look at North Korea.

Its hard to belive but there worse more cruel emperors than Caligula. Caracala who ruled from 187 to 217 AD was far worse. It had his brother Geta stabbed to death in the arms of his mother, forbid her from morning her son, had his brothers followers of even simpatizeis or simply people he knew put to the sword, not even the infants where spared. He had a mob of youngsters unarmed in Greece surrounded by his troops and butchered after tricking them to join his army.

read the book about him from author ikka schiavine. he was a cruel emperor but not the worst. in fact he was one of the best. if he had not killed his brother he would have suffered his fate. he was a solid emperor and in 212 his edict gave free roman citizenship in all free men of the empire. just read the book sand u will understand what kind of emperor he was.

There are at least three different, more or less, cut versions of this movie available on DVD/BR. Each of them is lacking some scenes, but these lacking scenes differ from version to version. I once watched the total uncut version in cinema with all "elements" in, which I later couldn't see on DVD anymore.
But there is no clear line: Sometimes hardcore porn scenes are cut, sometimes scenes of excessive violence, which are in another versions still there. One infamous scene is the torture and mutilation of Brocolus, where he got cut-off his private parts, which were fed to the dogs. This is missing to all DVD versions, only to be seen in the uncut version.

He is the first crazy cruel emperor, but Nero was worse! Nero didn't like Rome, he wanted to give the place his name nl Neropolis. So in 64 a C he decided to put Rome on fire. Now it is not sure Nero put the fire on personally because some historians claim he was at Capri then, but in this case he surely gave the command. And this he used to blame the christian and start up the first wide christian persecution under which apostle Paul was beheaded. Roman catholics claim Peter was also in Rome but this is a fairytale, Peter was never in Rome, he even died in Jerusalem because there is also his grave under the name Simon bar Jona. Nero let the christians be thrown before the lions and he was watching that, an example of his sick cruelty.

      You're mistaken.
Nero was tolerated for 17 years, and Caligula for only 4 years.
      So Caligula was more unbearable.
And then there were Tiberius, Domitian, Heliogabalus, Commodus - each worse than the other.
They were all finished off, 'cos they were that "good".

    • @patrickdevries6267
      @patrickdevries6267 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@ArmanLF First read what I wrote and then learn history. Nero was emperor from 54 till 68 and to my mathematis is that 14 and not 17 yrars. And it is not because Caligula was 4 years e mperor that he was more cruel. He was cruel and lunatic, but Nero to my opinion was worse. Nero became emperor by murder, he killed the successor of Claudius named Brittanicus by poisonning. Claudius was killed by the mother of Nero, Agrippina, He killed also his wife Claudia Octavia after divorcing her, because he loved more his maitresse Poppaea . Tiberius came before Caligula, most possible killed by his guard Macro, and Commodius came after Marcus Aurelius; To most historians Nero is the worst of all because he started the first big christian persecution, and that's not by Caligula nor Commodus or whoever, but yeah that's also opinion by opinion.

Caligula was a Roman emperor and he had even the intention to place his statue at square before the Temple. So they hated Caligula. Caligula was a good emperor. The Christians did character assassination. The Christians do this to all native faiths and their Kings. Christians wanted to show that they are good and others bad. Same is Caracala. All romans or pagans were good.
